thebes
Reading Caro's latest LBJ tome and run across this interesting factoid. On the day Kennedy is assassinated a Maryland insurance salesman is testifying before a Senate committee on how he purchased a $900 "Magnavox S-44 stereo" in cherrywood for Lyndon Johnson. The stereo was part of a payoff for a deal Bobby Baker had steered him into which landed him the construction bond for construction of the DC sports stadium now known as RFK Stadium. Said stadium is named after Johnson nemesis, Bobby Kennedy. . The resulting scandal could have propelled itself into a vicuna coat-type affair had not history , and the events of that day resulted in Johnson's elevation to the Presidency. Wonder if the Maggie sounded any good?

Marvel
$900 was still pretty expensive at the time. Bruce
Daddy Dee
Note that $1 in 1960 equates to roughly $7 in 2012 obviously, Ladybird Johnson had very good taste.
thebes
My albeit, cursory, internet search and visits to the usual repositories has not produced this particular Maggi model number. Would be very curious to see what it looks like. And, if as I suspect, the model number is wrong. than we can point this out to Caro, and subsequent editions of his excellent book will have to be revised. From my reading, he appears to have bought the Johnson's this stereo in 1957, but testified in 1963. Could be wrong about the dates. Say isn't Klispch now owned by Magnavox? Or Vox something or other. They should have this information. After all the statue of limitations must have expired by now. Suborning a President, 6 month statute. Stealing a gumball, no expiration of statue. This is the great American Justice system after all.
Daddy Dee
I looked around a little and couldn't locate that particular magnavox model either. would be interesting to know more about the unit.
Daddy Dee
Marty, Take a look at this post at AK. There are a couple of Concerto model Magnavox units posted that have S-41 or S-49 in reference to "channel" following the model number. Might be in the ballpark. For the price in '63 would imagine it would be top of the line. http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=192601
