  1. They also make iPod connector to RCA cords. I've seen them in the past on eBay made of high quality components. You can also get them on Amazon cheaply.   2. Like what has been alluded to, there used to be only a few channels of TV, they probably didn't come in very well and the stations went off the air at night. A stereo, on the other hand, could play hundreds of songs all day and night if you wanted it too. I think once cable became mainstream there was more entertainment for those who weren't musically inclined or who just wanted something they could turn on and play. For those who liked electronics or to tinker computers were the latest thing. Chad
  3. There's at least one pawn shop in town that doesn't care how long things have been around. I guess they thing that eventually their price will seem reasonable. I asked to see if they'd go down on a camera and said how long it had been laying on the shelf. The guy snapped, "What difference does that make?" The real money in a pawn shop is in the interest so some places like to have a lot of merchandise around so they look well stocked. Chad

  5. Sometimes this pawn shop gets some good stuff in. I got a Sansui G9000, a Teac 3340, a Technics 1210 TT as well as a Beatles Blue Box. I got pretty good deals on all four. So yes, I'm glad that they don't know prices. Chad
  6. The old pair was ugly when I bought them, they were painted a pebbly black color that didn't look good at all and to make them uglier, the paint was chipping off. I was going to strip and finish them but sold them before I had a chance. The storage shed is a climate controled inside unit. Hopefully there isn't much chance of damage there. The salesman at the pawnshop (where I spend lots of money and am in kind of good with the employees) said they paid $150 for the speaker. I don't know whether to believe them or not. I don't know why he'd lie to me but it does sound a lot for a pawn shop to pay. Chad
  7. I had a pair of very ugly Heresies that I sold when I bought my La Scalas. I always regretted selling them because I thought that I'd like to make a surround sound system with the La Scalas in front and the Heresies as rear speakers (maybe getting another Heresy for a center). Today I stopped in at a pawn shop to get a replacment iPod for my wife, who is always losing them and what did I see but a pair of 1984 Heresy HBR in fantastic shape. These things looked like they were bought stuck in a living room and never moved until they were taken to the pawn shop. I asked how much and the salesman told me $180. I told him to ring them up with the iPod. I'd post pictures but I took them out to the storage shed for safe keeping and didn't think about taking pictures until I was there. My La Scalas are HBR too, although not nearly in as good of shape. So when I get my music room set up, I'll have a nice start on a quad system. Chad
  8. I have a pair of MC30s. I'm using them to power my La Scalas. Before that they were pair with my Heresys. I now have a MX110Z pre/reciever but used to use a PAS 3X pre. The PAS sounded pretty good with the MC30s. The amps in the ad look cosmetically rough. Maybe that is why they are cheap. If you want them I'd say buy them and have them looked at locally if you can. You might be able to get away with using them for a while. The ad does say he replaced some parts. I'd say get the amps. If you don't have a pre, they have volume knobs on the back and you can plug a CD player directly into them. Chad
  9. I had a pair of the first generation of Heresies and only rarely missed the bass. Every once in a while, I would think that the music could go lower, but most of the time I was fine with how they sounded. Chad
  10. I've had a 5x5 up for about a year. It's pretty much full with things on top and knock on wood I don't think it's going to fall any time soon. My 5 year old uses the shelves to pick her self up from the sofa so she can stand on the arm and fall backward. I haven't heard any ominous creaks yet. Chad
  11. When I went to pick up my Harmon Kardon A50K after having it gone over, the tech hooked it up to a pair of La Scalas. I had seen a pair of Heresies at a pawnshop and went to get them. After a year or so I ended up getting a pair of La Scalas of my own. Chad

  13. What else do you get in the rebuild kit besides the caps? $87 seems kind of steep for 6 caps. Chad
  14. I have a pair of La Scalas with AA crossovers. According to the schematic the crossover takes 2 2uf and 1 13uf. I am thinking about using Clarity caps (unless there's something better:)) but they don't have anything exactly that value. Should I go a little over 2.2 and 15? Thanks, Chad
  15. Make sure your cartridge is alinged correctly. Download a protractor and setup your turntable so everything is in spec for the cartridge you are running. That should help the sound. Chad
  16. I have a TD-145 ( the 160 with auto lift), it's a great turntable. Chad
  17. My response: Technically this is what you will run into: 1.....Clicks, pops, scratch noise - Some records. Most of my vinyl is mostly if not entirely noise free. 2....Ramming a pencil into some records center hole to make it fit on the turntable. - I think I have had to do this to one record. 3....Putting a huge center weight on the record to help it track warped records. - I think I have had to do this to only a few records. 4....Spending about a couple of days aligning your tonearm and setting the tracking force. - It took me less than an hour. 5....Keeping the volume lower to prevent the 60 hz hum from the motor ruining the sound. - I don't know what you mean. 6....Spending big dollars to get a cartridge that you like. - I spent about $45 for a Audio Technica AT440MLa which sounds great. 7....Spending about a week of time isolating the turntable from the floor to keep dancing feet from jumping the needle. - I'll grant you this one. 8....Extreme hiss at high volume levels. (preamp, amp, cartridge) - Haven't heard this. 9....Acoustical feedback problems with some turntables. - Haven't heard this. 10....Bass frequencies rolled down by the RIAA curve (12db) to enable getting the bass on the record without groove interference. 11....Boosted high frequencies to get them above the high frequency noise level of the record with the RIAA curve knocking them back down. 12....Transient response (sharp ding on any instrument) reduced noticeably if you have an A/B playback setup between a CD and record ofthe same performance. 13....Vinyl's characteristics when formed require huge moisture removal techniques to prevent voids and bubbles. - Could be but how does that affect playback? 14....Some records are off center causing much wow and flutter. - Haven't noticed this. 15....At loud levels a huge amount of extremely low noise generated in the record groove (bass speakers moving 1/2" back and forth with no music) - Haven't heard this. 16....And I don't like them. - This should be your only item.   18. I've been thinking about recapping the crossovers for sometime. Maybe it's time I did it. Rick88, I'm glad to hear that your experience mirrors my own. I won't waste my time moving the speakers around then. Chad
  19. I have a set of Heresy I speakers that are up on 1' speaker stands that tilt back a little bit. When I sit on my couch the tweeters are about at ear level. I just started wondering however if it would be better if the speakers were on the ground and the front raised. They are against the wall but not in corners. The sound is good from the speakers although sometimes I notice a lack of bass I attribute that to the speakers and not the placement. I know that I could start moving the speakers around and figure out things on my own, but I'm lazy and typing is so much easier than furntiture moving Thanks, Chad

At the first one I found two for a buck a piece: Stan Getz/Charlie Byrd – Jazz Samba Sade – Diamond Life. They are in at least very good condition. I haven’t played the Sade album yet but Jazz Samba needs a cleaning but other than that played very well. The covers are in very good to near mint condition as well. Then I went to the next thrift store and hit some pay dirt. I kept pulling record after record from the stack. After I checked them all out only three were scratched or warped so this is what I was left with. Most of them are in near mint condition only two have slight surface scratches that shouldn’t effect playing. Some were even in plastic inner sleeves. They are all first pressings and also were a buck a piece.
