Newbie needs help with speakers

Hi all,

First post in this forum and I am looking for some suggestions and guidance to set up a HT.

I am currently in an apartment and have a HTIB and will be moving to house for which I need help picking up speakers.

The room will be 22X19, carpeted and opens to the kitchen. We will use it for movies and TV for 70% and music 30%

I have found that I like clean and crisp sound that comes to you.

I went to the local store to listen to the RF series but they did not have them. I first listen to pioneers and found that the sound was muddled, then polk which sounded nice and bright, the klipsch next to it sounded even better the K series, so i am assuming the RF series would sound even better.

I have found a dealer who is 1.5 hours away and will try to go and listen to the RF 62ii or the Rf 82ii and see how they sound. Do you guys think its the right type of speakers for the kind of sound that I am looking for. I have a receiver pioneer SC 1522 K that I got for a good deal. Also, thinking of getting the RW 12D sub.

Also, is there a site from where I can get B stock or open box speakers and save some $$$. Does Klipsch speakers go on sale? where can i find deals?

Welcome, what's your location? If you're looking for best bang for buck look for used Klipsch. The guys in here are great resources for pointing you in the right direction and maybe already have what you're looking for. For room that size rf82's would be minimum for my tastes.

God luck in your search.

welcome to the forum Sid. Acoustic Sound Design is where everyone here buys their RF-7ii's Mike will make you a good deal on A or B stock. i'm not sure i would go for open box speakers cause somebody already used them and who knows what condition they are in. big room needs big speakers. whats your budget.

gotta love that Pioneer receiver i have the 1222-K

Thanks for the website suggestion. Do I need to talk to some one specific at ASD.

Budget, well I am trying to figure that one out, should i stretch and get the rf82ii or stick with the rf62ii are for$500 each, and I saw the rf82ii at acoustic website for $900 but open box which you recommended to stay away from.

I am no audiophile so want to get the best sound possible without having to spend too much.

Sid369,

Welcome to the forum.

Does Klipsch speakers go on sale? where can i find deals?

Don't hesitate to give W.C a call at www.PanaceaEngineering.com He is a valued forum member and his company is an authorized Klipsch dealer. He is wonderful to work with and will do his best to match or beat any authorized dealer out there. If you must, go demo as many Klipsch as you can and get prices and then give W.C.a call at 980-721-6567.

its a sickness. you start out with 62's then you upgrade to 82's then you upgrade to RF-7's

Or you are like me, you go into demo the RB-61's and end up demoing the RF-7's. I ended up buying the RB-61's after my RF-83's. LOL

I may be out on al limb, but I think a majority of forum members have brought used speakers and have been more than happy with there quality. I started out with all new Icon V series and now have an array of new and used gear. Definetly more bang for you bucks. A lot of the used gear is in mint condition. See some of Youthman's collection or other members. You may be able to get an entire system for the price of the RF 82's. People on here will help you find some great deals. By the way, welcome to a great community of folks.

Very true. I have purchased some beat up gear but also have purchased some like new items as well. I just sold a pair of almost mint Forte II's with the original boxes that I purchased from an original owner. New toys are great, used toys that look like new for 1/4 of the price is even better. You guys are great. Thank you for giving me such great information.

I look forward to learning a lot from all you experts.

I got a quote from an online dealer. I am not sure if I am allowed to post the prices so unless you guys confirm I won't post prices. I just wanted to know of the dealers you guys have recommended can do better. Also the price difference between 62 and 82 is coming out to be $80 more so now I am inclined to go with the 82. :)

Wife may not be happy with the bigger spearkers though.

Which center will match with the 82's.

I also wanted to know how I can attach an image so that you guys can see the room layout and suggest location for speakers surrounds and sub.

It's new construction home so I am getting prewired but want to make sure my location selection is right.

I have listened to def tec, focal chorus and b&w and though that they were nice but I did not get clean and crisp sound and there was not WOW factor. Do you guys think klipsch will give me that.

Hit Reply, then click the Options tab and attach your image. You can only post 1 image per post with that method.

I get that with Klipsch speakers. Also with my B&W DM 604 S3's. Klipsch are known for clarity as well as a very "live" sound.

Ok I am attaching the layout of the room so that you guys can give me some idea.

Today I went to listen to the klipsch RF62ii and the guys was playing music through sonos online streaming. I liked the klipsch sound but felt that it was not bright as the polk. I want to love these factors and get the WOW but i am a little disappointed that i did not get that. Could be many factors, receiver, room, distance to the speakers etc. This was without the center channel and the polk was with center channel.

What am I doing wrong or am I not hearing them properly.

I also though that I would go with the RF82ii but after listening to the RF62ii side by side I think the RF62ii will be fine for us, plus wife won't like the fact that the RF82ii is so big.

I can tell you that when my wife and I went to the store this weekend and heard the pioneer and polk and klipsch v series (I forget the model number)

The polk TSI300 stood out to us as bright and clean, which is what we like. The klipsch V series did not sound as good. Could have been the set up. This was for music and whatever receiver it was hooked up with.

I am getting a good price on the RF62ii and RC52 center under $1000. Is this a good price? I tried the dealers that you guys recommended but they were a little more than the price I got from another dealer and even my local dealer would give me for $960.

Is klipsch not right for me. am planning on taking my wife during the weekend and giving the klipsch one more try. Any suggestion on any specific music that I should listen to get the best out of them. I hope I get wowed by them. else might have to get the polks.

I liked the klipsch sound but felt that it was not bright as the polk.

I haven't heard the new Polks but before I bought my first Klipsch speakers, I had Polk RT-800, CS300 and FX/500 speakers. The Klipsch were much brighter and the Polks did not have near the clarity and detail as the Klipsch did.

I want to love these factors and get the WOW but i am a little disappointed that i did not get that. Could be many factors, receiver, room, distance to the speakers etc.

That is very true.

I'm not familiar with the V series but if you are looking for wow factor, go with the Reference.

Is klipsch not right for me.

None of us can answer that question for you. You are the first person I have ever heard say that Klipsch was not bright enough or clear enough. I wish you could come over to one of the Klipsch member's homes. I bet you would be blown away with a properly setup Klipsch system.

Any suggestion on any specific music that I should listen to get the best out of them.

Yes....the best music you can demo is the music you listen to on a daily basis. It's pointless to take a jazz cd to test the Klipsch speakers if you don't like jazz. Likewise, if you don't like hip hop, I wouldn't recommend basing your opinion of Klipsch on how they sound with hip hop. Whatever you do, just try and demo them using the same receiver, same 2ch setup, same volume.

Is it possible to demo them at a different store? It's like the saying, "You can't do the same thing the same way and expect different results."

Hope that helps.

You guys are awesome. Inviting strangers into your home to have them listen to your speakers. I just want to buy klipsch just so that I can hang out with you guys here and be friends. Haha....

I also should say that I went on my lunch break and listened only for a few minutes. I should give it some more time. I don't think they will be able to play it on a comparable receiver. Maybe the polks that I listened to had the receiver high on the treble which is what I may be misunderstanding as being bright.

I can see that I would need you help once I buy the speakers to properly set it up.

Any suggestions on the center channel speakers rc52 or rc62?

Also with the room layout shown above would the rf62ii be able to fill sound in the room.

Can I do better than $700 on the rf62ii or us this a good deal. I would but used but I don't think I will find them in delaware.

Inviting strangers into your home to have them listen to your speakers.

In a weird way, you sorta get to know folks in this community and in a way, we are a family (albeit most of the time disfunctional). I don't know about most of you guys but I have ZERO local friends (apart from this community) that are really into audio and HT. I have one friend in Alabama (WakeJunkie) that built a HT in his basement after seeing and hearing mine. So anytime I get a chance to fellowship with other people of like mind, I don't mind inviting them into my home.

I don't think they will be able to play it on a comparable receiver.

So they have the Polk on one receiver and the Klipsch on another? That opens up a whole lot of possibilities why they sound different.

Any suggestions on the center channel speakers rc52 or rc62?

It's easy for most of us to say go bigger, go better, buy more more more....we really do enjoy helping spend other people's money. [:P] But in this case, I have heard the RC-52 with a pair of RF-82's and the 52 absolutely sounded weak. I was thoroughly underimpressed. I later heard the RC-62 with the RF-82's and it was MUCH better sound. Again, this could be the same as you are hearing...differrent locations, different setups, different receivers.

I would but used but I don't think I will find them in delaware.

You aren't kidding. I just did a 200 mile search around Delaware and didn't see anything until I got to Pittsburgh.

Maybe there is a forum member that lives close by that would invite you and your wife over for a demo. I have opened up my home numerous times.

It certainly is fun to demo a klipsch HT for people not familiar with the brand. You just stay humble and let the system speak for itself. It is polite to help pick their jaw up off the ground when they leave.
