No over all his 299 was not in good enough shape to warrant such an expense. So I took it in on trade as a parts unit for a 222C in decent shape that I had here and did my deluxe rebuild to the 222C using his tubes and sending him some back up tube with it. In the end he wasn't out that much since I was fair as I could be on the cost. I'm not sure what caused the transformer failure since it rarely happens especially two of them! But the fuse of double the appropriate rating surely didn't help matters. It must have been in the amp when he received it since he had no idea a 5 Amp slow blow was in it. The Wall is all ways my go to test album, I must say maybe its a new setup maybe it actually just sounds better but I know one thing. It sounds dam good and this works for me, I all ways ask my self how could it possibly sound better. Maybe someday I will hear another setup and say the same. But for now what I love about this setup if you think about it years ago it was pretty basic. Tube integrated receiver, turntable, and Heresy speakers. Of coarse in High school I may have never thought this cause I all ways thought louder is better. But as I get older that's not the case. I could only imagine how this would sound with better room acoustics and what not. But for now it will have to do and it sounds dam good. If anyone is ever looking for a great system under 1500.00 this is what I would recommend. I know to some that sounds like a lot of money. For me to go out and drop that in a instant it is. It has taken me several years to get here(mainly since I keep buying junk or gear I don't need). But this is the route I would take for any 2 channel system. Duder Duder, No need for thanks...as they say "it's my job man" I'm just glad we have you listening to great tunes... Do yourself a favor and forget about what might sound better for a while that huge wow factor you just got will never be equaled again. Yes you can do better but the margin of improvement is going to be much smaller and cost WAY MORE. At times I regret chasing that tail myself.. I still to this day think many vintage tube integrated amps even with the cost of professional rebuilding are the best bang for the buck in Audio by a huge margin. Scott, Fisher. Harmon Kardon, Pilot, Stromberg Carlson and many others all made some nice integrated amps. I had the same experience when I had Craig go through a 299 for me, I put in Dire Straits Money For nothing and it was pure magic. The Dude Posted August 5, 2013 Author Share Posted August 5, 2013 I got to listen to her Friday night into wee hours of the morning it sounded wonderful, maybe even pissing off the neighbors. I would like to order some new jj ecc803 this next coming week as I have those in the phono stage and I think they sound better then whats in my line stage. Quick question, there is the mag low and mag high, I have the dual 1019 in the mag high, is this correct. It sounds fine but what would I gain if I connected it to the mag low. NOSValves Posted August 6, 2013 Share Posted August 6, 2013 You should be using the Mag Low inputs. Low and high were entirely different things in the 1960's then they are today. The low input works best with cartridges from about 2mV to 6mV of raw output (moving magnet and high output moving coils). For Low output moving coils use the Scott would need a step-up transformer.
