Dr Morbius Posted July 25, 2013 Share Posted July 25, 2013 Hi, I own a pair of Cornscala's that I bought around 2 years ago that I've been loving ever since. The past few days I've noticed that the left speaker, especially on soft piano parts I hear a muddiness, (this is hard to explain) softness, not staticky, (is that even a word?) a kind of mushiness whereas the right side speaker is super clear and sharp. My Scott amp has a switch that reverses the speakers from left to right and back and it makes no difference, so I know it's not the amp. I even took the cd (it's "Kevin Cole plays Gershwin" a really nice recording) and played it on my home theater set-up and the recording's fine so it's definitely the speaker. Does anyone have any experience with something like this - I know I didn't blow the speaker since I never turn it up to ear bleeding levels so I'm thinking maybe a capacitor in the crossover gave up the ghost. I must stress again that I only hear this on soft quiet parts of the recording, not when a full orchestra is playing at it's peak. babadono Posted July 25, 2013 Share Posted July 25, 2013 Dr Moribus, Hmmm.... Can you swap the crossovers in the cornscalas to test your suspicion of it being a cap in the crossover? Mighty Favog Posted July 25, 2013 Share Posted July 25, 2013 Using the "stereo reverse" switch on the amp may not totally mean it's not the culprit. Try physically swapping the speaker wires from the amp to each speaker and see what happens. Where I'm going with thsi is that there may be some tracking problems in the volume pot. From there, make sure all of the wire connections are nice and tight without any stray wire stands making contact with the opposite connection. (spoken in Moe Howards voice) - well here's the update, I switched speaker leads at amp and still had left speaker staticky. So opened 'em up and switched crossovers, and guess what. Same problem. No change - so I put my ear to the speaker itself and found the tweeter (K 77M) really bad in a hissy static way. I couldn't swear to it but I thought the mid (K 52H) wasn't up to snuff either so I'll probably change them both. Any ideas where I should get them? ........Thanks! But the K77, is harder to do so you may want to send them into Bob (or Michael) to do. OR!!! This could be the perfect opportunity to upgrade to titanium diaphragms for the mids and Bob's tweeters! But who has these titanium diaphragms you speak of (they sound like a big improvement over the K 52H) and will they work without changing my crossover? Mighty Favog Posted July 28, 2013 Share Posted July 28, 2013 Contact Bob also for the mids Ti diaphragms, he'll have those too. Just tell him you have K52's and he'll send you the right ones. They're easy to put in and there's no changes needed to your crossovers. Can't wait to install!...... for the midrange he recommended CD 58P instead of the Ti diaphragms as the CD 58P's need no alteration to the crossovers, where the Ti's do. Did you find the K55's better than the K57's? Even though I've been listening to great music for a long time, I'm basically a neophyte when it comes to switching out speaker parts of a speaker. Mighty Favog Posted July 31, 2013 Share Posted July 31, 2013 I was going after the more traditional driver compliment for Cornwall's/Cornscalas. My k601 horns were bolt on where the k55 (Atlas PD5VH) were screw on, that gave me the excuse to order Dave Harris' FasTrack horns and pick up a 2hp router from craigslist. I'm very happy I did too. The k57's were o.k. but they sounded a bit too sharp to me. The k55's sound more natural but very authoritative. Not fatiguing at all. Do you know if there is good or bad reviews on the K 52H's? I kinda like the mid horns that are in my Cornscalas so I'm trying to do the best I can without cutting or modifying the cabinet.
