mustang guy
Notebook cleaning can be a big pain for sure. It seems like the notebook industry would devise easily removable fan/heatsinks. The server industry has been doing this for decades. It would be pretty simple to use heat sink piping and thermal compound to make a heatsink removable. As for the fan, that could have contacts much like a CDROM drive. Super simple... Pete H
I was shocked when I opened up my 5 year old Acer to change out the drive to a solid state, there was nothing to clean! I was prepared for a mess but it looked new and it got run really hard for 4 years.

Perhaps, the fins of some heatsinks are electrostatically attracting oppositely charged dust particles in some circumstances. In that case low humidity is the enemy. My heatsinks tend to get caked (air will not easily clean). I think this is due to higher moisture. Is your home dust free? Check this out. mustang guy
I just checked the Dell website on cleaning out dust, and they say blow compressed air or canned air into the vents. I don't know if I like that idea. I have killed fans doing that in desktops. here's the link: http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/19/KCS/KcsArticles/ArticleView?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&docid=511984

It can actually produce DC current and ruin things.
Coytee
Not to be a Debbie Downer.... But while you're at it, don't forget to clean out the dryer vents and the coils on the fridge!!
CECAA850
Pop a paperclip in there so the fan does not turn. It can actually produce DC current and ruin things. I never thought about that but it makes sense. I've opened up countless PC's at work and home and blown them out with shop air. I usually give the fans quite a spin I'll hold them next time.
