DizRotus
Can the Audyssey calibration microphone be used with REW? I've also asked this question in the subwooffer forum.
Thaddeus Smith
No, it's calibrated specifically for the Audyssey software.

artto
Audyssey or not, most any wide frequency bandwidth omni directional microphone can be used. Omni directional mics are usually pretty flat by nature. The main attribute is the size of the diaphragm, the smaller, the better for flatter extended high frequency response. If the mic has enough output to drive the receiver you'll be fine. The main advantage to using a mic like Dayton Audio's EMM-6 (available from Dayton or Parts Express.com) is that they supply a code for each microphone so that you can download the calibrated frequency response file for the particular mic you purchased and use it in acoustic measurement programs like REW. There's nothing particularly special about the mic supplied with Audyssey enabled components. It's just supplied as a convenience. I've used the EMM-6 or Octava MC-012 with a Mackie mixer supplying the signal to the AVR with Audyssey, MCACC, AccuEQ, etc and it works just fine. FWIW, I personally don't like Audyssey (using their supplied mic or my own). The results always sound very synthetic & unnatural to me. For instance, on the newer Onkyo AVR, everyone was complaining that they dropped Audyssey on their new models & replaced it with their own brand of setup called AccuEQ. I think AccuEQ did a better job, took less time & was easier to use. http://realtraps.com/art_microphones.htm
derrickdj1
Get the Omnimic system and you will be up an running in a hour. REW will require a lot of reading but is cheaper.
