ShapeShifter
Scott, Those boxes took one hell of a beating! There wasn't a ripple or tear to their exterior when they left. Some scuffs on their bottoms, but they were most certainly beaten and banged during the trip. I have been racking my brain all week trying to figure out how they could have dropped one box and damaged the speakers front corner it to the extent you described without causing any damage to the Grill. Especially since the Grills were in smaller height boxes located vertically along the front of each speaker. After reviewing the posted pictures, I strongly suspect the damage occurred because they violently rammed or jammed another box or container into the top corner of that damaged one. Those are common techniques to get more cargo into containers or trailers. Saves them money, but poses a bigger hazard to the shippers and recipients cargo. The tops and sides of the RF-3 cartons are their weakest parts, given their length and width. The bottoms are much stronger as they are double folds running the entire width and length of each box. A double fold method should have been used in construction of the top flaps as well. Ramming or jamming another container would cause the FR-3 to take the brunt of the force and weight, as the Grill's carton is smaller in length and height than the speaker, thus it suffered no damage. The conditions of the boxes clearly demonstrate piss poor handling and care on their part! To a more pleasant topic: Your setup looks great! That Mitsubishi looks huge and displays a clear picture. Wondering if you have considered moving the audio rack to the left of your left speaker? Would pose a bit of a contrast in height, but definitely get both speakers within equal distances of each other. That contrast in vertical height would be lessened if the rack was closer to a wall...just a thought. One can't tell which speaker has the damage with the Grills on? Thanks a lot for the photos. They are very revealing. Regards, Wes <edit> Do you still have the pictures I sent of the boxes before and after the speakers were packaged? They are a good reference as to their condition prior to shipment. ------------------ KLIPSCH IS MUSICf> My Systems f>s>c> This message has been edited by ShapeShifter on 08-14-2002 at 05:24 PM
space_cowboy
Wow, that box took quite a whack! Hope you and Wes get everything worked out. I've generally had good luck with UPS, knock on wood, ya just never know. I have a delivery due next Tuesday of fairly sensitive equipment (ie. small glass cylinders) and am keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for the photos, your setup looks good. Malcolm
Well, I cannot say I enjoyed looking at the damage. But it was interesting. FWIW the condition of the boxes looks pretty typical of the heavy packages I have received via UPS. Seems like the light ones show up looking like they just came out of the box factory. But not the heavy ones. It seems that current Klipsch speaker packaging is designed with palletized shipments in mind, not package services like UPS. It is sad commentary on UPS, though, that they could not deliver these speakers undamaged when I can get a half ton of laminate flooring shipped across the country via truck intact for not much more than it would cost to ship those three speakers via UPS. Of course, the flooring was on two pallets. OTOH you can have damage with any shipper, even if you do everything right. That is what insurance is for. We once shipped a computer system from California to Utah via a company that specializes in transporting sensitive electronic equipment. They put the equipment of pallets, packed and secured everything to their standards, used fork lifts to move the gear from the computer center to the truck. When it arrived in Utah, everything worked. But we had to replace the skins on all of the cabinets. Good luck with the inspector!
Orange Peel
Thanks for all the words fellas. The inspector should be here at work at 11:30am, so I will post results after the inspector is finished. Wes - Thanks for the compliments, the TV is huge and has a decent picture for a rear projection. I may move the rack over when I move in the new house, there will be more room where it's going. I do still have the pics you sent me, I will post those too for everyone to see and compare. Doug - hehe, you like that with the sub there? The new Polk PSW650 I got yesterday is twice the size of that little 8" sub that came with the RM6000 setup. That Polk sub makes some serious noise, you need to come to my place and help me set everything up now, I don't have a SPL meter, and it would be nice to have another pair of ears that know what they are doing ------------------ Scottc>s> Goldsmithc>s> Home Theatre:s> Harman Kardon AVR-125 Mitsubishi 60" Big Screen VS-60609 Sony DVD DVP-S530D Klipsch RF-3's Klipsch RC-3 Polk Audio PSW650 sub This message has been edited by Orange Peel on 08-15-2002 at 10:37 AM
krusty46
I feel your pain. Before I got my Klipsch, I ordered a pair of Wharfdale's from UBID. Needless to say they had to be sent back (after months of trying to reach someone at UBID). Just out of curiosity, what speakers do you have mounted on the wall behind the TV? ------------------ Mains: KLF 10's Center: RC-3 (I know--doesn't match mains) Surrounds: Quintets Receiver: Denon 3802 DVD: Toshiba 3109 and Denon DVD-900 TV: Sony 36XBR400 MIT T2 and T3cables throughout
Orange Peel
The UPS inspector just got finished, she took many pics, and was real nice. She said that Wes sounded like a great guy too from talking with him. I told her I want to keep the speaker, she said that I would have to work with the shipper, and since Wes wants me to have it and whatnot, I will be able to keep it. Krusty46 - The speaker on the wall was a Polk Audio RM6000 setup. I returned it yesterday and got the Polk PSW650 Subwoofer. ------------------ Scottc>s> Goldsmithc>s> Home Theatre:s> Harman Kardon AVR-125 Mitsubishi 60" Big Screen VS-60609 Sony DVD DVP-S530D Klipsch RF-3's Klipsch RC-3 Polk Audio PSW650 sub
