Shorthorn Value

Recommended Posts

I am the owner of a Klipsch Shorthorn Corner Horn Loudspeaker System purchased by my father back in the 1950s.  I haven't used it for several years and it no longer fits in our latest home.  If this topic belongs in another place please let me know.

I attempted to sell the set on Craigslist and then backed off as I didn't think I knew enough about its value.

According to Tech Support, the box contains a K77 tweeter, a K55V 2" midrange and a 12" K22 woofer, and a crossover of unknown character.  The box is blond and has wheels.  See attachment.

I also have a pair of Shorthorn S speakers, but not a T. They were available with either a 12" or 15" woofer from different manufacturers, K-1000 mid horns (various drivers), and tweeters from different manufacturers. Mine happen to have 15" 103LX Trusonic woofers, University SAHF mid drivers, and K-77 chrome basket tweeters. Here are a few links to Klipsch literature.

Knowing what's inside will help determine value. Others will likely chime in.

This is a rare bird, a Shorthorn Model T, possibly in blonde prima vera.  It almost certainly has a 15" woofer, not a 12", in order to pump out the low, low 30-Hz bottom end because of the apparently longer bass horn length and slower taper.

The woofer might be a Stephens 103 or an EV 15WK, a prized woofer.  Chances are it has a University SAHF mid driver and K-1000 mid horn, and possibly an EV T-35B or University tweeter.

A few people on the forum have looked for things like this for several years.  Someone may want to pair it up with another 15 vintage like early Cornwall or 15" Model S (it might not match up well with a 12" S).  It's pretty rare to just causally match it with something else or part it out.

If it is an early 1958 or older, it should be the Stephens Trusonic woofer and University drivers, like my Jan 1958 model S K-otho-15.

If it really have a K-77 it was updated or is newer.

The Stephens tru-sonic 103 woofers were going for ~$500ea a few years ago on eBay.

Attached is a price list from 1957.  They model T did come in 12" and 15", the hole in the front for the woofer looks smaller than the actual woofer on mine.

Likely it is the prima vera finish.
