Right Amp Size for R-28F Speakers

Alex

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I’ve purchased recently a pair of Klipsch R-28F speakers.

In the store they sold me these speakers with a Yamaha R-N500 receiver. It has 2x80W RMS power @8ohm.

Is this type of amplifier/receiver suitable for my R 28 F Klipsch speakers?

I’ve read this article about choosing the right amplification for the speakers, and I’m worried if
I did not get the right type of amplifier for my speakers:

Per this description I should have an amp with 120W-300W power.

The room size is 19' x '19'.

Can I use my R-28F speakers with the Yamaha R-N500 or

should I change to a stronger amp or a smaller speaker like R-26F or RP-160M?

Thanks for your help.

Going from 80 watts to 120 watts will hardly be noticeable.

That receiver should work just fine. Have you tried it yet? I'm sure you'll find that it has plenty of power.

When it comes time to upgrade, look for quality over quantity. I'd take a nice 50 watt amp over a mediocre 200 watt amp everyday.

Thanks for your comment.

Yes I have. For me it works fine. This is my first system, I do not have experienced ears.

I got confused after reading the article about amplification I mentioned above.

I think you will be fine with the Yamaha.  I have heard really good things about that particular model also.  Pretty beefy with it's 21.6 pounds which is heavier than many "100w/ch" HT AVR's.  Nice built in streaming features also.  I have often considered the R-N500 for one of my rigs if I had to replace any in the near future.  It also has a subwoofer preout if you were to add a subwoofer to the mix, which would take some of the load off of the Yamaha for when you really want to lay the pedal down.

"Lay the pedal down"  :D I like that!

Is that like "Let the big dog eat"?

You could say that or you could say, "let it rip". ;)  :D

Is it worth to bi-wire the R-28F speakers with the Yamaha R-N 500 amp?

The amp has 4x outputs, so I could cable as per the linked picture below:

http://bilder.hifi-forum.de/medium/787524/bwireoption3_396884.jpg

(I do not understand really the German forum)

Is it not bi-amping rather bi-wiring? (sorry if I'm wrong)

Is this a better setting with my R-28F speakers?

At the moment the amp is on 8ohm setting with normal cabling.

If I would do this "bi-wiring", how should I change the impedance on the R-N500?

The Yamaha manual has very little info about this...

Any thought is highly appreciated.

Bi-wiring from your receiver is basically the equivalent of using thicker gauge wires. It might make you feel better, but probably no audible difference(aside from placebo).

If you do bi-wire, the impedance will not change.

  • 2 weeks later...

I did some experiment today:

I connected the 4x amp outputs of the Yamaha R-N 500 to the 4x input connectors of the 2x Klipsch R28Fs with 4x pair speaker cables.

I think I like the sound a bit better. Better stereo experience IMO, not so harsh top, bit cleaner bass.

(I still feel the R28F has to hard treble section...)

I'd like to ask if one R28F is 8ohm when the 2x input terminal is connected as default, how many ohm is the top and bottom part of the speaker

when it is separated?

I can setup in the menu of the RN 500 8ohm and 4ohm.

On the back of the Yamaha you can read:

SP IMP: 4OHM MIN

A or B: 4OHM MIN / SPEAKER

A+B: 8OHM MIN / SPEAKER

SP IMP: 8OHM MIN

A OR B: 8 OHM MIN / SEAKER

A+B 16OHM MIN / SPEAKER

I belive in my case I should use the first: 4ohm setting in the menu, because I'm using A+B outputs with 8ohm speakers.

But I'm not sure how many ohm is on each amp's output in this case.

Can someone put things in order here :) ? Thanks.
