Marvel
Dave - Spent the weekend in midtown Atlanta visiting family, and walked to church on Sunday. Sacred Heart of Jesus Basilica was built in 1898. The organ is magnificent! II wanted to get upstairs to get some other pictures of it, but wasn't able to. Unlike many older churches, this one is meticulously maintained. Here's a blurb about the organ from the church's website: The organ was built by Casavant Freres of St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, Canada who have been building organs since 1879. The new organ was installed in 2001. The organ consists of 42 ranks of pipes, with two ranks of pipes coming from older organs. The organ façade is from the original organ installed at Sacred Heart in 1901 (a Hook and Hastings instrument). The façade has been restored to its original rich color. The organ is played at most Masses as well as at weddings and funerals. Each year the parish hosts a St. Cecilia Organ Recital where the vast capabilities of the organ are fully displayed. There will come a day, my friend, when we will be able to share communion. Bruce Edited May 4, 2016 by Marvel

Mallette
Casavant brothers are a great dynasty and thier reputation remains huge. Sort of like Steinway. The Hook and Hasting case is wonderful...so good they preserved it! Thanks, Dave! Dave
eth2
Never liked organs, just sounded like a lot of hot air to me.
Woofers and Tweeters
Earl, Due to the thermal dynamics hot air would have on the pipes, ambient air is used. Now a Calliope is a bit different.
Mallette
People who prefer synthetic prefer music made from plastic and such. People who like organic things love pipe organs. There's a good reason for that. organic (adj.) 1510s, "serving as an organ or instrument," from Latin organicus, from Greek organikos "of or pertaining to an organ, serving as instruments or engines," from organon "instrument" (see organ). Sense of "from organized living beings" is first recorded 1778 (earlier this sense was in organical, mid-15c.). Meaning "free from pesticides and fertilizers" first attested 1942. Organic chemistry is attested from 1831. Dave

Mallette
Geez.... So much for attempts at humor. I have no sense of humor when it comes to pipe organs. Dave
Mallette
Actually, there is one joke/anecdote I like. Virgil Fox is given a tour of the Allen Organ factory. His guide opens the door to a room with a lot of organ pipes. Virgil asks why they are in a synthetic organ factory. The guy says "We use them to determine how close we are to authentic sound." Virgil responds "Finding organ pipes in an electronic organ factory is like finding birdshit in a cuckoo clock." Not a lot of organ jokes, you know.
