tpg
Well... gosh. I have fairly new Sennheiser HD580s. I use them almost every night. And low and behold, what do I see? The plating on the plug is rubbing off! It looks black underneath.... I am scared. This is bad. Is there anything I can do to correct this problem? Thanks
TheEAR
Stop complaining about a $0.99 gold plated plug. LOL You will not hear any degradation in sound, its just the looks that suffer.

justin_tx_16
Is it the 1/4 or the 1/8 that is losing its gold plating?
tpg
1/8"
justin_tx_16
If it really starts to bother you, and rightfully so, contact Sennheiser. Your cord is underwarranty. Or, just buy a new one, only $25. But claiming it on your warranty is free. http://headphone.com/layout.php?topicID=3&subTopicID=26&productID=0050080000
prodj101
can always just get one of those super high end cables for them, lol.
prodj101
I wouldn't worry about it though. gold is used more for it's not corrosive attirubtes rather than it's sound quality.
justin_tx_16
i have the cardas, bought them from a guy at headfi.com though, so i did not pay quite the full price.
tpg
Ya... I know the story behind gold useage... really, if we went for lowest contact resistance, then we would use solid silver. But silver alone supposedly sounds brihgt and tinny, so people like Cardas mixes it with Rhodium, etc. This is what I have heard about silver. Really, copper is better than gold as far as contact resistance, but copper corrodes. It still sounds fine, so I will let it go. If it gets bad enough, I will spring for some Clous or Cardas cables. hehe Maybe make my own.
Malcolm
Actually, gold plating is used on audio connectors just because people think it is better. Gold is more expensive, and therefore betterm, right? Unfortunately, the plating is so soft, and so thin, that after a few insertions it is pretty much shot. The next layer should be nickel. Nickel is used between copper and gold to stop the copper from migrating through the gold. Nickel is hard. And the nickel layer is typically much thicker than the gold. Can't speak for its "sonic" attributes. I would not sweat the loss of the plating. Just go ahead and use the connectors if the sound is OK. Otherwise, just replace them with something that is not gold plated.
justin_tx_16
I bought this creme stuff that you put on connectors... a gel of sorts. it makes things go in and out more easily (no jokes please!) and keeps things from corroding or getting scratchy (once again, no jokes). It was about $18... did I get it from AMusicDirect.com?...

Frzninvt
The moral of the story is don't rub your plug so hard that the plating comes off and consider using some gelled creme to make it slide in and out easier! LMAO
