The AV12 can be wired in series for a 4 ohms as this is a dual 2 ohms driver. Just so you know, just replace that AV12 by a Tempest, and you got your total price reduced for the same kind of performance, even a bit more. But the RMX amp would be overkill for the Tempest and if you prefer a plate amp, you would be able to find some not so expensive. The MCM 250W amp is at 89$, a real deal and if you feel more secure with a more powerufll amp, MCM sells 360W amp WITH remote sells for 139$. So a total of 288$ + shipping (with the 360W amp!!), super bang for the buck!!! But just one thing thought, the Tempest like big enclosures. fire pinch Posted February 4, 2004 Share Posted February 4, 2004 For what kind of woofer? For both the AV-12 and the Tempest, a vented enclosure is recommanded if you want great SPL. The Tempest I have now is a 200L (approximative, a bit bigger than the 194L listed) enclosure tuned around 18.5 Hz. I chose this size and tuning because I like punch and power, and even though the SBB4 alignment may not be the greatest for flat extended bass in room, I have very good extension down to 16 Hz in room, FLAT. Under 16 Hz, the sub begins to roll off rapidly. And also, I chose this size because I wanted the smallest possible great alignment for the Tempest. A 170L box tuned to 17Hz is suggested by Dan Wiggins too, if you want the smallest possible vented box for that woofer. But that size isnt listed on the website. Ahhh, now I would like to explain and to talk more, but I must sleep now now now!!! If my answer isnt enough complete and I feel that it is, post again and Im gonna answer tomarrow. Ok, i ran some tests... and have some numbers for my AV15 in my room. First of all, my room response typically has a huge peak at 40Hz and a wide dip between 71@80Hz... and it showed up in both my sub and main speaker testing. If i run pink noise from a CD, my sub appears to be about 1db lower than my mains... but if i run the preamp's internal test tone... the sub seems to be about 2db hot (it's set to 0db in the menu). I'll have to look into further detail... but the 2db hot seems more likely... and more tweaking is to come. I also ran the tests with the sub's phase at 0 and at 180 ... and I prefer it inversed at 180 as it gave ±3db extra everywhere except at about 63Hz where it has a narrow cancellation. The rest of my tests were at 180 inversed. With a music source I got 118db at my seat with only the sub and 120db peak with the sub and my mains. This was done with the volume set just below the sub amp's clip using Massive Attack's Angel, RS-SPL meter without corrections, C weighed, Slow. My main amp didn't break a sweat. Maximum SPL before clipping/bottoming/failure? Not sure... BUT I got 112db at 20Hz before clipping and without bottoming out... but vent noise was audible and at this level I was afraid of overheating the driver (a sine wave is pretty much 700W RMS). The rest of my tests were done at 4db lower to prevent any failure. I could pull out my stereophile catalogue of colourful terms of speed, impact, musicality, overtones, and slight apricot flavour... ...but I'll spare you. Truth is, I only had time for a couple of songs... and they sounded great. At lower volumes, I missed the a bit of the mid-bass peak of my old sealed sub... but as soon as the volume climbed, so the did the sub's performance! It vibrated my internals to the point of a slight discomfort... and I liked it. The music sounded complete even when pushed. More to come as I experiment... but so far so good... They have several recommended designs for both vented and sealed as well as their own forum. Stryke's website You can also download WinISD design software and plug away at the numbers yourself. The following graph is from the stryke site... and shows a range of 1 to 3cf sealed boxes for the AV12. The RMX850 should be good for the sub with only one channel driven... your can always add a second sub and keep the same amp. Have you looked at the Adire Audio DPL12 as it will probably go lower the than the AV12 in a sealed box... but it will probably require a larger box. Later... Im sorry to say that Im quite impressed!!! This is not a little peak you have there at 40 Hz!!! I thought that mine was problematic but I think that I can relax more now! Are you sure that its not a room placement problem? I cant imagine a peak like that, Im sure you can find a solution! OR... maybe, the sub is too hot compared to the rest??? I just have a hard time to beleive that your sub is at its best location!! Another thing which I find strange is that with a phase of 180 degres, you get more power. I'll have to try this with mine! If that big peak wasnt there, I think that bass extension would look great *Update*: I tried to play with the phase and I just get worse SPL when it is not at 0 degree!
