Brain exercise for Jazz Fans.

This will be my 1000th post so I hope this thread will be informative, entertaining and fun. We all know that our favorites change over time but for this exercise let's only consider the present.

Please list your five favorite jazz titles. They do not have to be in any specific order and can come from any style within the genre. It will also be helpful if you list the Artist and LP associated with the selections.

I would like to thank all the jazz guys on the Forum that have helped me develop my interest in this great music. Especially, but not exclusively, Allan & Edmond.

Mine:

Stolen Moments From: Oliver Nelsons Blues and the Abstract Truth (Bob Sherman)

Song For My Father From: Horace Silvers Song For My Father (Allan)

Blue 7 From: Sonny Rollinss Saxophone Colossus (Kelly)

Patricia From: Art Peppers Art Pepper Today (Allan)

Cantaloupe Island From: Herbie Hancocks Empyrean Isles (OMO)

I either need a week and a half to think about it, or again, off the top of my head (& in no particular order & performed by, not necessarily written by):

Midwestern Nights Dream -Pat Metheny(g) w/ Jaco Pastorius(B) and Bob Moses(d)

Goodbye Pork-Pie Hat-Charles Mingus

Skylark-Paul Motian Quintet (w/ Bill Frisell(g), Joe Lovano(ts), Lee Konitz(as), & Charlie Haden(B))

Blossom-Belongings (Jan Garbarek(ts), Keith Jarrett(p), Palle Danielson(B), Jon Christensen(d))

Passing-Jan Garbarek w/Bill Connors(g), John Taylor(org), Jack DeJohnnette(d)

That required way too much effort.

Okay, here're my 5 bits:

1) Verse - Patricia Barber

2) Ever Since The World Ended - Mose Allison

3) Good Morning Heartache - Johnny Adams

4) In Blue - Karrin Allyson

5) Blue Light Till Dawn - Cassandra Wilson

Guess I must like bluesy vocalists.

I've always been awed by Allan's clarity to create a top 100 list, something I could never accomplish. I will however follow his lead to list the most recent to hit the turntable, because I was off today and have been listening off and on all day. As the night progresses, this list will evolve.

"Blues & Roots", Charles Mingus, Atlantic

"Caravan", Art Blakey Jazz Messengers, Riverside

"Look What I Got", Betty Carter, Verve

"Ole", John Coltrane, Atlantic

"Milestones", Miles Davis, Columbia

Klipsch out.

I'm only just starting to build up my jazz catalogue, but my favorites thus far are:

Miles Davis - "Kind of Blue" LP (right on Ken!) and "Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quartet" LP

Various Artists - "Jazz at the Pawnshop" LP

Dave Brubeck Quartet - "Time Out" SACD

John Coltrane - "A Love Supreme" SACD

Agh!

Your the crew that needs to get me some good jazz CD's! I have 'Kind of Blue' on the way, but what other must have music must I buy? Even if the music itself isn't the best (still needs to be good), what are some masterpiece recordings to show off my system?

If you've got a broadband connection, go to KCSM.org and you can get an astonishing 24/7 of commercial free Jazz (and blues). We're really lucky here in the San Francisco Bay Area - We get this over the air for free (of course, don't forget to pledge when they ask for it - or it may go away).

Lets see, on the PC: Diana Krall and Supertramp (progressive rock, I know, but there early stuff is fusion jazz)

On the home movie and music reproduction system lately, it has been Diana Krall, Patricia Barber and Cassandra Wilson

I t old you all it would change! On the way to work this morning I listened to some CDs I burned from LPs a couple of weeks ago.

Jackie McLean Riff Raff (written by Grachan Moncur --on LP "Destination Out")

Larry Young IF (written by Joe Henderson--on LP "Unity")

Charles Mingus Theme for Lester Young (Goodbye Porkpie Hat) on LP "Mingus x 5"

Isn't life grand?

I'm replacing Amanda (only because I've played it to death) with Grant Green's Idle Moments (which I've only played into a mild coma).

If I was listening for the first time, my list may look more like this:

Cool Strutin', Sonny Clark

Autumn Leaves, Cannonball Adderly/Miles Davis

Take 5, Dave Brubeck

Moanin', Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers

Watermelon Man, Herbie Hancock

Honorable Mentions:

Giant Steps, John Coltrane

Shine, Stan Getz

My Favorite Things, John Coltrane

A Waltz For Debbie, Bill Evans (version with Cannonball Adderly)

Sunrise Sunset, Sonny Criss

Sorry if I cheated.6.gif

Once again you guys, buy "THE BEST BLUE NOTE ALBUM IN THE WORLD...........EVER!" I can't tell you enough times that this is the BEST way to figure out if this jazz stuff is for you. If you don't LOVE almost every song on disc 1, don't bother with 50s/60s jazz. It's not for you.
