Engineering Jobs in this Industry

I know that this is the home audio forum, but I didn't know where else to post the question. I am a senior at Purdue University that will be graduating in May with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I was wondering if any members in this forum could offer advice on landing interviews at Klipsch (I have tried the careers link on the web to no avail) or any other company in the audio field. I am only posting this becuase I have noticed that many members work for companies in the audio industry. Thank you for you help!

Congratulations on your upcoming graduation! I got my ME not too long ago....well....uhhhh...okay, it was 12 years ago. I wanted to go work for Cannondale Bicycles but things weren't going to well in 1992 for ME graduates. I ended up getting my first job at that tiny little company called Motorola! Ha!

I've worked for 3 other companies since then and I've had some crappy positions here and there but otherwise, I love it! I've been able to stick my head into super hi-tech robotics as well as 1930's vintage manufacturing lines(and everything in between)! ME's get to be a little nerdy when they want to and a little functional when they want to. You'll have ton's of choices throughout the years to come and loads of variety to keep you having fun!

let me tell you that if you think the me's are nerdy, you have never seen a fully functional group of EE's..... (no to be rasping on my own degree)

LOL

Yep, we have them all here... EEs, AEs, MEs, IDEs.... I will not comment on the "nerdiest" of the bunch!

Is the

for discount or am I hired to be a product line manager? If for the former, I wish you could hook me up with some Reference gear instead of Synergy

That was a 9.gif because I'm in product development for Multimedia (and helped on the new Synergy)... Since we developed the gaming/computer speakers, I've been fortunate to go to E3 in LA, several LAN events (Dallas, Seattle..) and media events (San Francisco). It is a lot of fun. We get to demo our beta units, evaluate competive products, make sure our speakers work with the latest technologies...

It's not a bad job. 1.gif Of course, the majority of my traveling days are over, at least for a while, but it was fun while it lasted.

Looks like I started a hot thread here. Anybody else out there work for audio companies besides Klipsch (components, electronics)?

Well, my friend works for Bose. He pulls in $450k a year, has a Lexus LS430 as a company car, gets 12 weeks paid vacation a year, and does not need to work very hard.

Believe it or not, I was in the exact same position as you 2 years ago. . . Graduating from Purdue except with an EE degree with a job at Klipsch being my dream. Had several interviews in several very different industries (including Klipsch). In the end, after a long and excruciating search, I landed several job offers to choose from with very different positions and industries.

Now, I'm a Design Engineer designing wiring harnesses for the automotive industry, now with experience in Global Production Planning, Sub Assembly Design, Kaizen, and more boring nomenclature. Hopefully in a few years I'll be able to contribute significantly to Klipsch as a member of their team. I have to start somewhere, right?

Anyways, my point being. . . just take what life throws at you when you're trying to get your balance. Soon enough, you'll get what you want.

Hope this is good encouragement.

Boiler Up!!

Now, get a roomful of Software Engineers! All the usual "nerdy" topics comes up! Lord of the Rings, Dungeons and Dragons, the latest computer games and hardware.....

Funny when the guy that picked up my old entertainment unit came by and saw my current electronics rack, the computers, the full-sized arcade games in the basement, he then asked me if I was in any of the computer or technology fields. When I told him I was a software engineer, he replied it figures, with all the electroncis and stuff that I had around.

Anyway, not much for software engineering in the audio fields. I did pop the question to Trey when I was in Indy during one of those "pilgramages" and he said that they where looking for somebody that new how to write sofware for DACs. Nothing I have any real-world experience on, though.

To get back to the original topic, it ceretainly does not hurt to send those resumes out. You never know what may come up.

'Skiier,

Congrats on getting closer to your degree. After getting a degree in recording studio engineering, I too graduated from Purdue in 2002 but in EET, and at the F.W. campus. A friend of a friend works at Klipsch and enjoys it quite a bit and after going to the 2004 Pilgrimage I can understand why. Unfortunately, I was only able to stay for the building tour but it was very impressive. Send in your resume and keep sending when you see a job post that you think fits you... I think I'm on 6 or 7 1.gif By the by, I ended up in the comm industry and play with audio and guitars and tubes after work.

Congrats on the upcoming degree! I too have a ME degree, but NOT from Perdue. And what is the deal with all of these Purdue grads around here?!?!

I would suggest looking long and hard at what makes that engineering heart of yours tick. Find what you love, and you will have a much stronger chance of being happy at a company. Audio might be fun, but might not be a true pasion. IMHO, one of the most important things to consider is the companies "view", "mindset", or "personality". Klipsch is a large company, and they may have an enviroment which is completly opposite of your personality. My best (and most unstable) job was with a SMALL landscape architectural company (there were 8 employese total) but the company attitude matched my personality. I learned alot, liked going to work, but, the company folded about 2 years after I started. However, as I (and everyone else in the office) worked directly with the clients, I had a new job less than a week later.

Good luck on your search....
