ooteedee
Woofers are in. Bin Top and Sides are on. Doghouse sealed. Not sanded yet. Stain will have to wait. (You can see a hint of it on the inside. Red) Tops and HF motorboard are next. But not before I temp wire the xover, mid, tweet, and woofer .....then fire it up. Which I plan to do tonight. Carl Orf's "O Fortuna" perhaps? Or Van Halen's "Mean Street"? Alright...I'll do both. The only obstacle is.....the door to the basement is about 24.5 inches wide. Yep. Pretty tight for a speaker that's 23.75 inches wide. I will be cautious...... Onward and Upward (the Stairs) PS: Original Post had Picture attached. See below for re-posted picture
Corvzr1
Oh, I see now. They are starting to look nice. Please let me know where you got the prints for them. I would love to build my own pair, except I will be keeping a light wood finish. Good Luck
ooteedee
Corvzr1: There are two picture/blueprints floating around somewhere wthin the forum. You may need to dig a little. Attached is a picture I created just to help me organize everything.

Marvel
Can you put the link in for the pic? It got eaten by the forum software. Marvel

JohnA
http://www.hps4000.com/pages/525_.html Go here and check out the bass horn braces. You should add a pair to yours. Your work looks good so far!
3dzapper
ooteedee, Nice work! And to think they laughed when you sat down to play. Once you get them singing, you might not want to move them from the house to the barn. Unless that is "The Barn" is the name of your nightclub. Coytee
A dumb question if I may (I'm not a woodworker) Why would you assemble it unfinished when you KNOW it's going to be hard to get into the nooks & crannies? Why not put a basic finish on it and then touch up those parts that need it later?
D-MAN
That's BLASPHEMY! speakers should be thouroughly EAR-TESTED prior to completion to ensure that it is worth the work or not. Especially the FIRST one! I mean- why bother with the second if the first one SUCKS?! DM
yaffstone
Glue won't stick to varnish either since the varnish seals the wood pores where you'd like to have glue instead.
ooteedee
RE: Finish construction before staining I stained the areas deep inside I knew I couldn't get to later. Most areas are easy to get to with stain and some polyurethane. RE: Why build both before testing. I built both because...well...what would I change? Might as well get it all done. All the boards were cut at the same time. As long as they were accurate I knew all would be well. Besides, I wouldn't want to change the design based on performance. I am not Paul Klipsch. If I don't like how they sound, I'll just experiment over time with better speakers and other tweaks. RE: Glue. There's very little glue exposed. Most was wiped away. No worries. RE: Braces Interesting. I found a guy on the web who had made some nifty looking LaScalas using braces and adding screens... much like on that site. http://www.dcchomes.com/LaScala.html Thought about it. Easily added. I think it's more interesting that the site you sent is such a ripoff of the LaScala. RE: Test Result Ran them last night for a few minute before the baby got fussy. They sound "OK". Not the big, clean, tight bass thump I was expecting. Kind of muffled. And it's true. Mid Horns are a bit harsh. I think the crossover is crappy. (So is the amp for that matter and maybe the woofer too but I already knew that) As you know, the lowend crosses over at 1200. I have my eye on some crossovers from Parts Express. Any comments on these? http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=260-156 or http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=260-230 I will tweak with equalizer for awhile... Find a setting I like and upgrade stuff in a couple of months. Thanks for all the positive comments. It has been, and will continue to be...a fun experiment. Thanks for all the help. D-MAN
I tried the PARTS EXPRESS 375Hz 3-way crossover. It will work for $40 ea. and handle 4 or 8 Ohm woofers. I found that the sound of the cheapie crossover was a little "scratchy" sounding, but that's typical of cheap crossovers! It will get the job done, so you can have something to listen to in the meantime. Also, consider REAL K33E's as they have the best bang for the buck, I've found. ooteedee
D-Man: You said you tried "a cheapie" crossover. Were you referring to the Parts Express 3 way crossover (375hz) ? Or something else? PS: I think the 375hz was a Dayton
D-MAN
That is correct. All of the above. Got it so I'd have something to listen to while I waited for my first pair of ALK's. DM
ooteedee
Thinks its any better than a used Radio Shack Mach One crossover with Mid/Hi L-pads?
D-MAN
Don't know. I would choose on price alone at this stage. DM
