O/T...Born2rocku's - DRUMSET (recording studio)

O.K. family.......here is another special set picture of a set that I use to practice

very intense mental/physical dexterity drumset exercises.

This is an " ambi-dexterious " setup that I have arranged to challenge

myself to play drum set patterns with opposite leads !

I begin a pattern with the most natural feel using a common "right-handed-lead",

...then immediately switch the same rhythmic pattern to the

opposite leading side, using a "leading-left"approach.

This setup was created from being influence by of one of my favorite drummers,

Mike Mangini , who played w/ Steve Vai for many years !

I wish I could describe the feeling I got looking at these drum kits and reading this thread. Sigh....

In 1963 my oldest sister was "allowed" to bring a Beatles record in to the house. I heard then saw them on TV. OMG - I just HAD to play drums. So at the age of 6 and being in a military family (i.e. very little money) I put together my first drum kit. It consisted of different sized cardboard boxes that I figured out how to "tune" using packing tape and a pair of drumsticks I whittled out of a couple of small tree branches (got a spanking later for cutting those branches off the Mamosa tree 15.gif).

You would've thought my parents would've taken notice.

At the age of 8 my begging finally got me one of those toy drum sets. You know, all plastic shells, front of kick drum was cardboard, cymbal made from a recycled pot lid and painted a brass color, drum heads made out of mylar. I could've cared less. I beat the hell out of those things and tried every trick my 8 year old mind could think of to improve the sound of the tom or snare.

You would've thought my parents would've taken notice.

In the 6th grade a music store came to my school and offered music lessons and instrument rent-to-purchase. My chance at last! I signed up for drums, but they also made us choose a second and third instrument. The beginner band teacher didn't like drummers7.gif so here Tom, say hello to your new trombone. I complained and even cried.

You would've thought my parents would've taken notice.

Three years later, at the urging of my band director, my parents pay for private trombone lessons. At the end of lesson week one, I'm putting my trombone away and over hear the teacher say to my Mom, "You know, Tom is kinda unique. I mean, he's got really good technique, a very good ear for pitch, his timbre is good and will get better as his embouchure (sp?) develops, but he can't count the notes yet his rhythm and timing are dead on. Put a new piece of music in front of him and he just knows the rhythm. He's just like a metronome. You know, he'd make an excellent drummer."

You would've thought my parents would've taken notice.

Oh well, such is life. LOL...I still view pencils as drum sticks.

Nice kits guys and thanks for listening. 1.gif

AndyKubicki :

Your coment on the throne.

Dude, I would love to hear that! But that stool...it's gotta go...6.gif

Isn't that picture evidence that I love what I do

and use my equipment to it's fullest potential ????

For you, I will replace it with a different throne if you want.

Since, I do own 6,7,or 8 different other ones, ...the one pictured just happens

to be on that set on that day, for I have the other nicer ones to other uses.

~ Thanx for the comment though ~

Tom,

What a great story! Bruford talks about an improvised drum set he played with when he was a kid on one of his videos. But I gotta ask you...did Ringo's drumming inspire you to want to play the same way, or did you just want to outdo him (you probably did sound better even on your improvised kit) 6.gif

Craig,

I'm sorry. You're right. I meant no disrespect to the Throne. How dare I!

AndyKubicki:

No offense taken.

P.S. - Thanx for the incredible Gentle Giant band link !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...actually Terry Bozzio only lives an hour and 45 minutes from my house !

The reason for all those drums and cymbals....

his drum set is tuned in a penatonic (sp?) scale !

(I believe)
