It is interesting that a tsunami is described in A.C. Clarke's first major novella, Childhood's End. Published in 1952.

There, in one episode, people are fascinated with the recession of the tide which uncovers the seabed offshore of the beach. They are not cognizant that this is a prelude to the tidal wave, and therefore linger.

I infer that the setting was drawn from historical fact.

BTW, if you want to know what the 2001 movie is about, you have to read the 2001 novel. Very good. The movie is a limited illustration. If you want to appreciate the 2001 novel, you have to read Childhood's End. Let me suggest you read it first.

C.E. is short and almost a simplistic parable. It gives away little to tell you that the human race perishes at the end while the invading alien Overlords survive. However, anyone will feel far more sorrow for the Overlords.

Yep, I had no idea that the sea receeded before the tsunami struck. Read one article about an 11 year old girl from the UK who was responsible for saving many lives. She'd just a few weeks before learned that fact in geography and started screaming at her parents who were going down toward the water to check out the seabed. That particular beach in Thailand was the only beach which suffered ZERO fatalities.

Family pic off Krabi, Thailand, on the morning of the tsunami, the approaching tidal surge is clearly visible. .

Fortunately in this case a few folks on the beach have a clue, the family closest to the waters managed to escape unharmed.

Satellite photo that actually shows the same tsunami off Thailand, the city of Krabi is located at the northernmost point of the water.

Amazing this is visible from space, close-ups show the extent of the sea disturbance behind the leading edge. We can only hope that a global warning system is in place before the next one hits.
