Rega Planer vs P

Is a Rega P3 and a Rega Planer 3 the same? If not what are the differences? Does it matter significantly?

I am considering a used (100 hour) Planer 3 with RB300 arm and rega cartridge. Nothing Phenomenal I know, but my Scout plans are on hold and looking for something to "get me through" for a while. I figure the Rega's hold their value pretty well so reselling should not be an issues 6-18 months down the road. A different cartridge may be in order in the short term.

Thanks TT wise ones

The Planar 3 is a hell of a lot more than a "get me through" table. A lot of people go no further, even though they could, if they wished. It is a very good industrial design, if you want jewelry however, you'll have to look elsewhere.

There are differences between the two. The motor control is an upgraded circuit similar to what was used on the Planar 25. The drive pulley is metal now, and I think Rega has done away with the O-ring suspended motor.

I think you would be very happy with either one, and the arm is good enough to mount practically any cartridge you wish. You may very well find yourself wondering if you really need anything more.

Edgewound, thanks for the info. I thought the Planer was the older models and the "P" was the newer ones. I also figured there had to be some slight differences. However when the seller said it only had 100 or less hours on it I figured it was most likely a P3 not a Planer 3. Either way I think it was a good deal.

I know the arm is a great one and the TT was in my price range. The guy wrote me back and said he would accept my agon offer if his current buyer fell though. Not my day as it is now sold and not to me 8.gif

Oh well, I keep looking.

Don't be discouraged and don't limit yourself to the P3. Good deals can be had for the now discontinued Planar 25, which is just a more refined Planar 3, and a little better looking with some wood trim. Thanks to the "upgrade" craze, they're out there. One word of advice: if the table is to be shipped, HAVE THE SELLER REMOVE AND SHIP THE ARM SEPERATELY! I can't emphasize that enough. I've lost count, the number of broken Rega finger lifts I've seen over the years after transit, even in Rega's box/packaging. Don't know if this has been improved as of late, but back when I bought my two Regas both came with broken lifts, it was very, very common.

It's funny, Rega ships an entire table in a minimal cardboard box, but ships the seperately sold arms in a little, wooden coffin.

Better safe than sorry!

I recently shipped a Rega arm and broke the finger lift. VERY aggravating! I be selling that one soon at a nice discount.

Anyway, as a P25 owner, I am amazed to see these on A'gon in the 800.00 range. What a fantastic buy at that price!!

I have a Planar 3 that I bought on E$%y and it was shipped in a factory box. The motor had come loose from the rubber suspension and the arm (Grace 747) was still attached. It lost the bottom cover plate on the lifting lever and the arm was flopping around like a fish out of water (shipper only latched the arm into the rest, he didn't fasten the arm down7.gif11.gif)

The motor was easily re-suspended and the arm was re-aligned and the cover was reinstalled. No perm. damage though.16.gif

It is a great table, solid and dependable. For giggles, I played an LP that was warped like a potato chip! It was so bad that the "bump" in the lp nearly touched the bottom of the tone arm! It played and tracked the LP FLAWLESLY!9.gif9.gif Not the ideal conditions to play LPs for sure but it did it and if you closed your eyes so that you couldn't see the LP playing, you would never know how bad it was!

I run a Rega amp, preamp, turntable & cdp. Couldn't be happier. Together they have a clean, warm sound combined with my RF7s. Didn't break the bank either - $4000 retail for the 4, not counting speakers. I bought my stuff as demo units from a small boutique audio store (they weren't hammered), so I saved about 25% and still got full warranties.

Rich,

I met up with forum member "Shade" (real name Dennis) yesterday in Chicago. GREAT guy. I wish he lived closer to the city so I could hear his Ref 7 system but he mentioned that he owned the Rega TT and I believe it was the 3. You may want to pm or email him for his thoughts. I think he's a fairly recent vinyl convert also.

Good luck!

My wife is an attorney for SSA and they had an award ceremony yesterday. Due to her disability, she can't travel alone so the government paid my way to be her escort (she was a big award winner so they didn't have much choice).12.gif It was held at The Drake which is one of the nicest hotels anywhere! It was SWEEEET! Any hotel with sofas in the elevators is OK by me.9.gif

The original plan was to hook up with Smilin but he had business he couldn't avoid so that fell through. At least I got to meet Dennis although just briefly. I brought him some Sinatra stuff for his music room.

I hate the Drate! I love the Drake! (Seinfield fans will know this one)

At any rate the Drake is in fact a killer hotel. I love Chi-town. Wish I knew you were going Gary, I would have given you directions to the Wieners Circle. Check out these strange but true stories from my younger days if you have some time to kill.

Wieners Cricle

Any Chicago members frequent this spot???

I assume you mean the Social Security Administration? Nothing personal, but I find it amazing that they are having award ceremonies at the Drake on the tax payer's dime, while pleading poverty. Especially when one considers the elderly eating pet food and prison inmates receiving benefits.

My apologies for taking this thread off topic.

These are some of the hardest working government employees. Period. As attorneys, they could all be making much more money in the private sector. My wife works 80 hour weeks quite often as do many of her peers. Awards were given to those who helped SAVE taxpayer dollars.

I'd talk about what happened to all the SSA class action suits during the early-mid 90s that cost the taxpayers HUGE bucks but that would be inappropriate.

Oh, yea. Lived in Lincoln Park after college in mid to late 80's. I had a freind who would vist and always say, "let's get one of those hot dogs with the salad on top". Great for the frequent hangovers I encountered in those days too!

Like I said, NOTHING personal. It's the people who are legitimately no longer able to pay taxes that I'm worried about. When's their party?
