bigrol21
I have the upgrade bug and I am considering getting a pair of RF-7's and placing my RF-25's to my rear surrounds. My question is, will I have to upgrade my Kef 2150 10" sub. I REALLY like the way it sounds but I'm afraid that the new mains will over power it. Here are the specs to my current sub: PSW 2150 Frequency range- 30Hz-140Hz Amplifier-
MrMcGoo
Do you have to upgrade? No. Should you upgrade? If you can spare the funds, yes. The old sub will have a tough time staying up with RF-7s that are on good amps. Bill
DrWho
I bet you'll find the RF-7's to have way better bass than that little sub so an upgrade will definetly be needed in the future. But give it time and upgrade one compenent at a time. You'll be able to appreciate each improvement individually and will ultimately enjoy your system more. bigrol21
What would you recommend I go to? 12" or 15"? That kind of stinks as I like my current sub a lot. Do you know what would be comparable to what I currently own that will fit in with the new configuration and would be fairly easy on the budget? DrWho
First you need to decide on the largest acceptable size for the subwoofer cabinet and then from there find something that fits your budget. No matter who makes the sub, size is proportional to quality when it comes to subs (Hoffman's Iron law and all that). So anyways, what kind of budget are you looking at and what do you want out of the subwoofer? Some people want loud deep extension for movies, others want a less distorted sub for music (which often entails not going very low). So what kind of music do your listen to and how much percentage do you spend listening to music versus movies?
bigrol21
Thanks for the advice. I agree with your suggestion of upgrading on component at a time. I never really thought about doing that. I'm sure my wife would thank you for the insight also. My sub currently has an option to switch over from music to cinema. I usually watch movies though. I would say that's my biggest reason to upgrade. If you think that the two RF-7's will sound better then my one sub, how about going without one? I wonder if I would miss it.....I want something clean that would give out a nice deep bass without sounding too too aggressive. I wouldn't want to spend more the $1,000 or so. Any recommendations? I usually keep my sub in a corner so the size wouldn't be that big of a factor.
DrWho
Oh wow, for $1000 you can get quite the subwoofer... You might want to check out some of the offerings from SVS: http://www.svsubwoofers.com/

Dayton Titanic III Kit 2 Hours of work, and a heck of a lot of sub for the money. http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=300-764 $688 with FREE SHIPPING. I doubt anything under $1000 can touch it.
CECAA850
As good as they are, I've run my RF-7's without a sub with movies and find them lacking at best. LFE tracks are really meant to be played on a good sub. If you even remotely consider a DIY project, an IB sub has to be considered. Pre-made, I'd second the motion of most any offering by SVS. The amp is another $200, I believe. I think the reason to get the kit would be to save yourself a lot of trouble. I don't have a workshop and the tools required in order to construct an enclosure, but if he does, then by all means full DIY is the way to go for the best customization and price/performance ratio. But if you go totally DIY, then there are probably better drivers out there than the Titanic.
TheEAR
"size is proportional to quality when it comes to subs" No it is not, deep bass output is MOST OF THE TIME proportional to sub size. There are many garbage large subs on the market. You want examples you will get them... Sunfire Signature EQ a 13*13*13 subwoofer is better than a bigger Klipsch RSW12,SVS ISD subs, most HSU and most larger subs in general. It plays louder, goes deeper and is more accurate(less coloration and frequency irregularities).THD of the Sig is very low too. The only real weak point is the price, but size...LOL sure. Velodyne DD12 is of better quality than most larger subs,it has THD levels that are below any competition and goes deep as well as it has an auto EQ and comparator circuit that makes it even more accurate. My Aerial SW12 is smaller than most SVS and I would never trade it for an SVS.
DrWho
There is more to a good sounding sub than THD ratings and "accuracy" (whatever that means). And since we live in a real world with a real market, we must make comparisons between equally priced options. Hoffman's Iron Law dictates that sacrifices are made when the cabinet is made smaller...There is no getting around the laws of physics. formica
"My Aerial SW12 is smaller than most SVS and I would never trade it for an SVS. But it is significantly larger than most other 12" subs. It must dwarf your RSW12... I think Mike correct in saying size is critical when it comes to "bang-for-the-buck" in subwoofers... ROb PS: 1000$ is in that category... TheEAR
To the contrary the Aerial SW12 is not much larger than the RSW12.The only big sub using a 12" woofer is the Wilson Watch Dog,it is one mean sub, considering its single 12" driver.
