I have been playing bass for a long time, and I have gone through enough basses. If I were on a real budget or buying a starter bass, I would look for a used Ibanez. The Fender basses are OK, but you won't get anything decent for under $500. Check out http://www.daddys.com/ for their used basses. Another cheaper avenue would be Guitar Center, (which owns Musician's Friend), and is nation wide. I think that you can get a killer Ibanez (Neck Through) that will last you a while.

Also, if you buy used, you can turn around and get most of your money back if you trade up, or sell it outright.

I would agree with the Fender P-Bass or a Jazz, try to find a used USA version, not mexico or china. BUT, you really ought to hit all the new & uesd stores and play everything you can. I started with a 100.00 special 36 years ago and went thru Fenders and settled on a '72 Rickenbacker 4001 that I still have and use for live & recording. Cuts right thru all the keybds and guitars. it's all feel and comfort. good luck

One of the nicest sounds from a bass I ever heard was a friend who had

an original Hofner bass. He pulled the frets out and played it through

one of the smaller Ampeg Portaflex amps. Sweeeeet!

The Ibanez basses are really good.

Duke is right, the made in Japan Fenders are okay.

How would that country music sound with a fretless bass? Kinda neat, I would think - distictive, yet not pretentious...

The finest fretless I have ever played was a Warwick with active electronics (expensive), the second best was a cheap fretless Yamaha ($150 new) that was alarmingly good - real good, wish I'd bought it.

While I think there are still some great Fenders out there, unless you

really WANT the name, there are lots of great instruments by other

makers. And you shouldn't have to mortgage your house to get one either.

Duke,

The little Portaflex was nice. I didn't really appreciate it enough at

the time my friend had it. Hope he still does, but that was 25 years

ago. It only had a twelve in it. We were mostly playing in some smaller

bars and it was simply awesome. Not the bars, they were pretty bad.

[;)] Let's see -- one electric, my lap steel, drums and bass. We sure

had lots of fun, even if we didn't make any money at it. Memphis has

probably changed a bit since then.

The tone changes with age as well. He also has a Godin A5 fretless with piezos in it that is just awesome.

There are a lot of good basses out there. Low cost doesn't mean it's bad.

It's an A4. [:P]

My yamaha was a good first bass for the amount of money I was willing to spend at the time.

But I was able to get my used Fender for not a whole lot more than I spent on the yamaha.

The Fender is a '70 something with block inlays in a maple neck and a refinished (un)natural ash body.

In it are Seymour Duncan Basslines active pickups with an internal 9volt preamp.

Looks better in the pic then it does in person although it really has a lot of "character".

I also have a Fender Tele Plus from '91 that's american made with the lace sensor pickups in it.

A few years ago(2001) I was really lusting after a telecaster and after shopping around for a while I came to the conclusion that the new american made tele standards were not near as nice as the 10 year old tele plus my friend had finally decided to sell.

The fit and finish of the older guitar was nicer and the fretwork was much smoother and overall more finished looking.

If I were going to consider getting another guitar or bass(I'm satisfied with what I own, amazing I know) I would probably look at used instruments before I considered a new ones.

And I knew that too! Since it is a four string, it is an A4. Duh!!! [:$]
