Stovebolt6
I think I spend more time reading about audio than listening. I'm up late at night when I can't make noise, wishing I could fire up the Hi Fi. Anyone else?

colterphoto1
Oh, is THAT all it is? Whew, I thought you were going to say you bought Bose or something really horrible. There used to be a thread titled 'what are you listening to RIGHT NOW? They'd catch me all the time, I'd see that and have not even the radio or iMac on. Not a tv, nothing. All this equipment and I'm just typing away in silence. Like right now, see I did it again. That's it, I'm going to sign off tonight and go watch the game at least. Thanks for the wake-up call. TheEvan
I spend far more time playing classical guitar than I do listening to recordings. And the more I play the less I listen...
Daddy Dee
me too. btw, would you mind posting some pics of your speakers there. Are those DIY Cornwall types? Altec horns?
Stovebolt6
They are Altec 2-ways. I built them myself. They are bass reflex corner cabinets tuned to 40hz with 515E drivers. The front is styled after a decorator Cornwall. They have 511b horns and 909-16a compression drivers. Horns are damped with dynamat. Compression drivers have the tangerine phase plugs with loading caps removed and felt installed. They are crossed at 600hz because that is where the phase alignment is right between the drivers. The crossover is a second order with an ALK type circuit utilizing an autoformer and swamping resistor to keep the impeadance constant. They are flat from 40hz up until I can't hear anymore. IMHO they sound wonderful. Certainly good enough for me. Dan

Marvel
Nice looking cabinets. Gotta love the Altec stuff. Are those new 909 drivers (from Great Plains) or older ones? Bruce

Seadog
I think I spend more time reading about audio than listening. I'm up late at night when I can't make noise, wishing I could fire up the Hi Fi. Anyone else? I have two young children, and a wife that turns in early. I often listen to vinyl played through my Scott 299D using headphones, while reading these posts. Listening to vinyl assures that I have to get up every twenty minutes or so. That's also a good time to get another beer (since we are making confessions here).
jheis
The headphones thing reminds me of something that I saw when I was in the Air Force. I was stationed at Ramstein and living in the barracks (like a dorm for all you folks who have never had the pleasure). Anyway, a buddy and I had been out on the town and returned to find his roomate sitting in a chair facing away from the door. Roomate was reading a book and listening to his stereo through headphones. With the headphones on, the roomate hadn't heard us enter the room. With an evil glint in his eye, my buddy walked up in back of his roomate's chair and, from behind, suddenly stuck the open palm of his hand in front of his roomate's face. I have never seen anyone come out of chair backwards so fast in my life! Roomate never forgave him, but it still makes me grin. Stovebolt6
Daddy Dee, Thanks for the compliment. As for the plant, believe it or not, the Lily was part of the original negotiation with the wife. The conversation went something like this: Me: Hey check out these plans for the speakers I'm going to build. Her: What is that thing sticking out the front? Me : That's the horn. Her: You gotta be kidding me, that thing is ugly! ...How big are they? Me: Well they are going to be 28 inches across the front and 40 inches high. Her: Your not putting those f___ing eyesores in my livingroom!! Me: You'll like them when the lights are off. Her: I don't care if they sound like God's own chorus of angels, the're not going in my living room. Me: I already bought some of the parts I need. Her: You what?!! What did you buy? Me: The horn lens and the compression drivers. Her: How much did you spend? Me: More than I should have. Her: Well where are you going to put them? Me: In the corners. Her: Then I'm going to put my peace lilys on them. Me: No your not! Her: Yes I am!! Me: So I can build them then? Her: Wait a minute... Me: Yes!!! I had the local glass shop custom cut two pieces of glass one for each speaker. The Lilys sit on the glass. They are watered in the bathtub and sit there until they are done leaking. Still makes me nervous, but it has been two years with no accidents yet. I like the headphone idea. turned the Hi Fi off an hour ago. and here I sit in silence again. Stovebolt6
While I'm confessing... ...I like Christmas music. I had the Eico FM tuner dialed into a station playing some old favorites earlier today.
www.records
Dan, those Altecs look awesome. Excellent work. I use a pair of Altec Model 17's (604-8G Dulplex) in factory 620 cabinets and love'm. Are your patterned after the 620's, I noticed the dimentions look the same. I also used the felt under the cap on mine and it helped smooth out the highs and I like them better this way. I am fortunate to have my own room at the far end of the house, so I can listen to music as late as I want without bothering anyone. I will confess that I am listening to Christmas music tonight. Trying to get in the holiday spirit. Last year it came and went and I was left in the daily routine dust. 2 Mc40's Altec 17's Sansui 1000A Thorens 160/Linn LVX/Denon 110 Steve
