Bob,

I just did the experiment with the paper clip. It's definitely the materal, not the conduction around the loop that counts.

I was able to find a hunk of stainless steel to try and it doesn't make any difference just like you said.

I also tried a loop of the ground braid wraped around the outside of a 128 uH litz inductor. At 1 Khz it dropes to 126 mHy. at 10Khz it drops to 97.9 uHy. At 100 Khz it's down to 91 uHy.

Will your little B&K meter go up to 10 Khz?

Dean,

The inductor in Bob's 500air8 picture is edge-wise to the cap. The way you have yours setting is rotated 90 degrees such that the magnetic field has to go right into the cap. I think If I were you I would move the coil. I think one thing that is certain, air is the best best core material! Moving it away from the cap will make the entire discussion a moot point!

But it's such an interesting discussion don't you think?

"Air" core as opposed to being filled with a ferrous material -- I'd like see what Q does if you stuff the center of the coil with a piece of wood. Seems hard to believe there would be any effect -- even thought the air has been displaced.
