tofu
this is the largest legal one i could find from benchmade. http://www.benchmade.com/products/p...spx?model=10500 i live in nyc. according to what i read a 4" blade is permitted, but i'm not sure if the knife has to be concealed or not. i'd like to carry said knife on my waist for conveniance. it gets a bit chunky in the pockets carrying folding knives. assuming what i plan on doing is legal, what is general knife wearing etiquette? do you wear it on the front like a cell phone? clip it in the back? hip? of course i guess i'll have to remove it whenever walking into metal detector protected stores. but what about delis and supermarkets? is it intimidating to openly wear a knife there? thank you. oh, and if you have any other 4" blade recommendations that come with a nice holster, i'd apreciate it. Speedball
I've carried the Model 530 Mel Pardue lockblade many years clipped in my back pocket at work. Never did carry it in public though, great for opening light fixtures when changing light bulbs at work. Very high quality knives.
tofu
i have a benchmade balisong, but it's illegal by .25". a "butterfly" knife isn't too versitile for every day use anyhow. i mainly bought it for style []
Jay481985
you live in nyc ummmm don't you think that carrying a knife will set off some terrorist alert ? [] but anyways most people don't care if you have it in the backpocket concealed. Hey what you cannot see you will not scare
tofu
although it's a small knife, i don't think any fixed blade will fit in my back pocket with the sheath and all. now i can clip it onto my belt behind me to make it less obvious, but if the law is fully concealed only, then i don't think that will fly too well. tofu
well, this clears things up.. It shall be unlawful for any person in a public place, street or park to wear outside of his or her clothing or carry in open view any knife with an exposed or unexposed blade unless such person is actually using suck knife for a lawful purpose as set forth in subdivision d of this section. sputnik
[^o)] Hmmmmmm, then this would be legal as long as you wore a nice sport coat over it.
Soundthought
Cold Steel, S.O.G, Boker, and Spec. Ops make a few decent blades that are worth checking out. A few manufactures make smaller blades that you can wear around your neck. They come with different variations of a quick release mechanism. Worth checking out. IMO. One thing for sure...... I would definately like to have that Tanto pictured in the above photo. Regards, John
sputnik
I have a one handed Browning locking knife with a pocket clip like the one shown on the bottom of this set. It carrys nicely clipped in a pocket and it's been great for everything from cleaning a hoof to first aid to fixing skis to slicing pineapples. About $30 so you don't have to worry about abusing it or losing it. I like to go the cheap route because I'm always losing them.
Duke Spinner
I carry a SOG folder with a 4" blade.... it has assisted opening, that is as fast as a switchblade, but totaly legal... some places I work, it feels mighty nice to have ....... Invidiosulus
I have a Gerber EZ-out that has worn enough over the past 10 years that I can momentum it out one handed about as fast as anybody I know with an assisted opening or switchblade style knife. usually at work I keep a Spyderco Delica clipit in my pocket though. It's a bit slimmer than the gerber and doesn't feel as bulky. I can also flick it open very fast with the thumb hole in the back of the blade. also closing it one handed is fairly quick, I flip the knife so the handle is betweel my thumb and forefinger and I depress the lock with the side of my middle finger, then a slight flick of my wrist and the blade is closed. Anyways, I think the build quality on the spyderco is a lot nicer than the gerber.
Speedball
Forgot about my Spyderco, it's nice too. I have a Spyderco Police Special and the only time I really carried it was strolling the city park with the dogs around. Nice knife but it seems a little fragile compared to the Benchmade, maybe because it's a thinner metal blade. The serrated blade looks wicked. Man alive Sput!...that sword behind that guy's back is looooong. Maybe I'll get a S.O.G. next time.
Shade
If you can't carry one in view, you may want to look into a folder with a belt clip. That way you dont have to keep it in your pocket, and it's not as likely to scare the locals.[] Benchmade is an excellent brand, high quality stuff. I carry a CRKT Mirage folder, had it for a few years now. Good construction & a good blade. If you do go for a folder, make sure to get one with a good locking mechanism, such as a liner lock. It'll hold a lot more pressure than the typical release you see on a buck knife. Don't get me wrong, I prefer carrying a good fixed blade, but folders are generally more convenient and less likely to get you any hassle from local law enforcement. michael hurd
I have a Kershaw Black Colt, and a Gerber ( unsure of the model ), and I wear either on my hip when I go to a wreck, not too often out in public. Both are folding knives with decent locks on them, but the stainless blades are a bit on the soft side.
tofu
sorry guys, forgot to check the thread. but yea i think i'll just get a folder from benchmade. atleast i'll be able to get a larger blade and not be hassled. i don't think they're going to bother me over a 5 inch folding knife. thanks for the advice. djk
"i don't think they're going to bother me over a 5 inch folding knife." You think wrong! The Sullivan law in NYC is the problem. Passed more than 100 years ago to prevent people from coming out to the polls and voting out the corrupt, they are still mis-used today. Recent cases include: A woman defending herself with a rat-tailed comb. A woman defending herself with an ashtray. If you are stopped and searched for any reason, you will go to jail. Essentially, it is against the law to defend yourself, and they can make it very hard for tradesmen with tools.
Duke Spinner
somebody better have a excellent, legally defendable reason for searching Me ..... they should have given the Issue very careful consideration .... and have some Big friends along, too ...[8o|]

tofu
if i could carry a fixed blade without uncomfortably hiding it in my pants (somehow), i'd definitely buy this http://chrisreeve.com/aviator.htm
Speedball
Even with a folding knife clipped to the inside of a back pocket it's still pretty obvious to me, that's partially why I do not carry one. In general a person will not be searched unless they are being really obnoxious anyway. Officer Tofu, If someone had a switchblade, better yet a stilleto to sell me I would whip out the cash in a minute...[]
