Modding Synergy's for better sound?

As good as the new Synergy's are (see my sig, I have them), I have been

wondering is there are any little improvements that can be made to them.

For example, tapping the horn produces a quite hollow plastic 'ringing'

sound - I wonder if you could 'better' things by covering the outside

of the horn (as in, what is inside the cabinet, not where the sound

waves are traveling!!!) with some sort of material to deaden it (think

- roofing tar!) - could this clean up the sound by making sure the horn

itself was not acting as a volunteer midrange driver (picking up and

amplifying back waves from the woofers inside the cabinet?) Or,

could additional or different internal stuffing do anything?

Basically, I am trying to think of things that they may have wanted to have done, but to keep costs low, have chosen not to do.

Its interesting I saw that you have 2 b3's as your surrounds. This is just for my own curiousity why do you have those instead of the s-3's. I have your exact setup except I have the s-3's. So I was just wondering. Also how do you like your receiver. I'm still in the market for one as I just got my speakers and don't have a place for them at the moment. I'm kind of taking my time on them. :)

Oh, oh wait...

The reason I went with them B3's is because I was more interested in

music surround, and precision of surround (I am the only person that

uses theis system, so everything is setup around ME and MY chair).

However, in our downstairs system, I would actually go for something

like the S1, 2, or 3's because there are people all over the place, and

it is literally 99% TV/movies, and 1% music.

The automatic setup on my receiver (see sig) did a AMAZING job.

In 'The Incredibles', the part where the jet be being shot down, there

is literally no surround speakers! The sound fluidly pans front

to back, and side to side. There were parts where I swore I was

in a movie theater where the walls were lined with surround speakers -

there were sounds coming out of the walls HALF WAY BETWEEN THE FRONTS

AND REARS!

Another reason is I have them in positions that the S3's wouldn't have done as well in.

go to your local hardware store and ask them where the rope caulk is.

Then simply apply it all around the horn. Sadly the search function

isn't working, but there used to be a ton of threads on it in Updates

and Mods with pics and everything.

You want more out of them then replace the marginal but cost effective capacitors and coils in the crossover netowrks with Auricap Theta's, Kimber's, or Hovlands and you will see more improvement than you would by upgrading or changing a source component.

If you can work a soldering iron and can place an order you should be able to handle it I would think.

I don't know the component names, but starting from the top:

-The two non-inductive resistor things are labeled 10W2RJ

-The yellow thing just below them is labeled 1.8uF J 100V JRD (are

these caps? They are racetrack shape like those KEF woofers)

-The iron core inductor thing has no markings

-The black capacitor is labeled 15uF 100V

-The air core inductor is labeled 0.3mH

-The other yellow thing (bottom right) is labeled 15uF J 100V JRD

Everything is glued on, so I don't know how easily it would come apart.

Ken,

Lots of room for improvement on those networks for sure. Looks like a couple of resistors (white ceramic deals), a couple of coils and a few caps (yellow jobs).

The only tricky thing is the replacement caps are going to be larger than the stock ones so you may have to get creative in placing them.

Looks like you have most of the values, the inductors and coils should be OK I would get the caps replaced.

If your serious Ken, take some sound deadener material for car audio and conform it to your horn on the exterior, so it will be on the interior of the speaker. The caps could be replaced as has been mentioned. I would go with the cheaper sound deadener first, rather than the caps. Since the material is fairly thin, you can even line the interior of the cabinet. Once you do the cheaper things, I'd sit back and enjoy!

If you knew what I paid for them, even clearance Reference is a

magnitude more expensive - anyway, I HAVE the Synergy's, and it would

be a pain to try and sell them. My next upgrade will be something

like Heritage, THX, the mysterious Premiere series, etc. I have

no interest in a incremental step. The reason I got the speakers

I have is to hold me over until I can afford something that is hands

down better - and disturbingly expensive.
