Arathorn
I have had a pair of Cornwalls since 1980 and want to change their dark finish to match the light oak of our current furniture. Has anyone done this and what is the best way. They still sound fantastic but my other half would prefer if their colour could change. Any help would be much appreciated. Arathorn in chilly England. Tom Mobley
the only way you're going to make walnut into birch or whatever is to veneer them. I guess you could paint them a desireable lighter color, but usually paint is not looked upon with favor. You can veneer them with whatever wood your other furniture is and use the same type of finish. There's been many threads with detailed info on veneering on the forum. try the seach feature, but it is not working well.
BS Button
I can't think of an easier speaker than the Heresy or Cornwall to veneer, especially if they are not decorators. It's a blast! Iron on method with a good quality paper backed variety. BS
tkot
as opposed to "fixing the finish" of the cornwalls you may consider getting new furniture to go with the cornwalls!!! just go to a few garage sales at the local castles in the area(your in merry old england) and im sure that almost all of the furniture will be dark wood!! j/k good luck jay
meagain
You might want to research bleaching the wood, then restaining?
colterphoto1
You might want to research bleaching the wood, then restaining? I doubt whether this could be done successfully. Others have tried and it's usually just a big mess. That veneer is very thin and original stain and oil deeply embedded. About the only way to change the veneer is to CHANGE THE VENEER, ie, fix the substrate, fill in cracks, chips and voids, and apply new veneer. This has been successfully done in many cases here. bchulett
I've also had a pair of 1980 Cornwalls since new. After remodeling, buying new oak furniture and refinishing the hardwood floors a few years ago, I decided to go black. They match my HT system now... the finish came out flawless. See the pic in this thread... http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/683605/ShowPost.aspx
greg928gts
Go to www.tapeease.com and buy NBL backed oak veneer. Use the regular contact cement. Oak is light in color, so it will make the edges blend in well. The backer on this veneer is very light, so one doesn't see the edge of the backer even though it is there. Of course, only do this if you have a few woodworking skills. Go to www.dcchomes.com and look at the audio links and you'll find more info about my experience with veneering. colterphoto1
Moon, it's like the design criteria was 'how UGLY can we make this thing' LMAO, That's exactly what I though when I clicked on the link. It doesn't get any better inside either. Michael
