Upcoming move with Klipschorns

Hurricane Katrina's pictures got my attention last year here in seaside Maryland. So, in mid-March I am moving away from sea level some 25 miles inland and a little higher up to just north of Salisbury. MD. With me are going my 2003 Klipschorns and 2004 Belle, with professional movers, I hope the speakers arrive as mint as they are now. (They are in perfect condition.)

I have been using them in a 7.1 HT system with RS-35 sides and rears and a Pioneer 50" plasma HDTV that is a real video pleasure and which sits atop the Belle center. Yet in my experience, the Khorns + Belle seem to come into their own on music rather than movies. IMHO and experience, they are "wasted" on much movie not to mention broadcast/cable TV material. Partially this is because the qualty of soundtracks varies all over the place. And partially because the video attracts eye + aural focus on the screen, and the sound beyond a certain quality level becomes secondary. One aurally just does not "hear" Khorns as critically when watching movies as when listening to pure audio.

My new (older) house I am moving to does not lend itself to a full-bore Khorn home theater such as I presently have. So, an epiphany of sorts struck me a couple of days ago: place the Khorns + Belle in a dedicated audio-only "music room" arrangement in an area of my new house which lends itself to that with excellent corners, and set the HT up elsewhere in the place more compactly with more modest but good audio. For starters I can begin with a pair of classic Large Advents I have for the front mains, and the RS-35's plus a center channel speaker to be determined, depending on what will fit below the TV in whatever stand I finally wind up buying for it.

It should be interesting. Has anyone else had the experience of going back "down" from such an ultimate HT installation to a pure-audio one?

Be careful with those "professional movers." If you have the original boxes, use them and they should be fine. If you don't, insist that they be wrapped well in movers blankets before leaving the house. Don't let them talk you into "we'll do it once it's on the truck." If you've never moved with "professional movers" before, expect things to get damaged. They will do as little as they have to, won't admit to damaging anything, and depending on what company you are using, may make it difficult to get reimbursed for the damages THEY did.

I totally chunked the HT and now have a dedicated Khorn room (use to be my HT room) and could not be happier.

My TV sits in the dining room. I find there is nothing on TV to watch anyway and if I watch a movie it seems the movies I do watch don't need the surround sound.

I also find that instead of watching TV I am more likely to listen to music.

Someday I may go back to HT, but it will be a Heresy system.

Khorns were made for music.

Good Luck,

Danny

Danny, I find it interesting that you 86ed the HT and went audio only. I do have a dedicated 2ch rig and room but the HT is getting more and more use. It used to be only for movies that it got used and it did a fantastic job of improving the quality of the experience. Since I added a HD tuner card, I find myself watching the HT for TV also, not just for things like the Super bowl and Olympics but for TV when broadcast in HD.

Interesting, To each their own and more power to you and however you choose to enjoy your Klipsch![:D]

HT to me was to just make the movie louder with big booms here and there.

I had a HT room and a 2 channel room.

I could never just sit and watch a movie all the way though. I'd get antsy, hit pause and do something and then come back.

Towards the end I was watching the Simpson's in 5 channel stereo.

The HT experience just never really floated my boat. I sold all my speakers and all I have left is a Denon RX'er sitting in a closet. I still have my DVD player, but it is just sitting on top of my 45" TV.

Now that football is over, I may turn the TV back on in Sept for basball playoff's. Nothing on TV grabs me. I have never seen Lost, 24, American Idol, etc.

Yesterday I picked up a new 32" HDLCD TV. On the way home I swung by the local cable company and they inserted the high def card. Man, I love high def. Looks like plasma, but it's LCD. For movies I just hit the tuner button on my preamp and listen to the movie through my two LaScalas and sub. Not surround sound but close. Did I say how nice high def is?
