Allan Songer
I ordered 30 CDs last night. Just to have around the office and car! This included K2 titles. YOU WILL NEVER EVER SEE A DEAL LIKE THIS AGAIN! Concord bought Fantasy and is KILLING the "OJC" line--once these are gone they're gone for good. http://store.concordmusicgroup.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=BLOWOUT
colterphoto1
ALLAN- very cool- quick give me some tips on what to get. Blakely, Coltrane I saw on the first few pages. I'm leaving for the weekend very soon. If you could put together a list of 'must haves' I'll trust your judgement. Michael

Looks like I scored with the same as you on the Miles, some Jackson, and Coltrane. I have one Monk Uh-Um and don't really care for it, maybe I didn't give a fair chace. I like Guaraldi Charlie Brown so gave him another shot, Mulligan Sax is cool and I'd heard of Milt Jackson, knowing that I like Wes M. made one of those easy. I got a lot of the various artist ones, knowing that like with my Jazziz collection, sorting through them on my iMac is a great way to make some mix cd's. Plus if there's any I don't like, selling them to other Forum members is easy. What did I miss by not copping Dolphy, Garland or Hawes???? Thanks for the heads up. That was an easy $100 to spend for 30 discs. How wrong could I go. Michael

colterphoto1
Thanks Allan, I had just ordered but checked my list against yours and probably didn't do too badly. I edited my post above which is my actual order of 30. WHEW! M
Allan Songer
. What did I miss by not copping Dolphy, Garland or Hawes???? Michael A lot! Red Garland and Hampton Hawes are two of THE greatest pianists in jazz history. Dolphy was a GIANT on reed intsruments cut down in his prime by diabetes which had gone untreated for years--he was barely into his 30's. I know of no player who had more command over his instrument. I believe I own a copy of every record he ever played on.
tigerwoodKhorns
Allan, I need a list!! I can follow yours but let me tell you what I have been enjoying. A local radio station has "Sunday Morning Jazz" that I try to never miss. I just bought a Diana Krall CD (the Girl in the other room - great CD) and I also picked up a "Strictly Saxaphone" CD that was a CD included with certain Yamaha purchases. All great music. I was disappointed in the past when I bough a bunch of Jazz and it was all old recordings that sounded like an AM radio. They are all in storage and I never listen. So I need a bunch of jazz that has a nice tone and good separation of instruments (sounds great on my system). I am looking for high quality recordings because they sound so good with the system. Which way do I go? Thanks, Chris
Allan Songer
None of the albums on my list are "bad' recordings and most are fantastic. Many are "mono," but so what? How many to you want to buy? To get them for $2.98 you have to buy 30 titles, but at 20 you get them for $3.98.

I know, I can use that DSP mode for 'club' [makes retching noise].

I am a little hesitant on the mono stuff because I am using extremely revelaing speakers, amps and DAC (I heard a background noise on a newer recording a few days ago - sounded like a musician moving and maybe dropped something). The Krall CD sounds awesome. It was recorded post 2000. Older recordings will work, I just need good ones. I'd also like to stay with stereo recording to enjoy the imaging. Suggestions? Thanks, Chris
Allan Songer
If you go Stereo only you'll have to eliminate all of the Miles Davis, most of the Coltrane, most of the Monk, all of the Red Garland, all of the Hampton Hawes etc. I dunno what to say. There are some killer stereo titles here-- check out "The Poll Winners" Shelly Manne's "My Fair Lady" Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section Monk "Monk's Music" Wes Montgomery "Incredible Jazz Guitar" Most of the titles on my list are mono. garymd
I haven't looked yet but definitely grab all the Hawes, Pepper, Garland you can. Dolphy, Monk & Coltrane will be more iffy if you don't know what you're buying. Even some Miles Davis can be iffy. If you don't like Ah Um, might I suggest Monk's Dream or Straight, No Chaser if available.

colterphoto1
Gary, can ya help me out? I didn't buy any of the Hawes or Garland pieces. Called the customer service line but they are unwilling to change any orders. If you need a few extras to fill out your order or want to swap for something I got, could you double up on a couple of the Hawes/ Garland CD's? Thanks man! I flubbed my order and the only way I could get back to 30 was to double up, so I got two of the Guaaraldi Fate to the Wind Cd's. Michael
garymd
Michael, I decided not to buy any since I couldn't really find 20 or 30 I desperately need. Plus, I'm trying to save my pennies. I'll be happy to buy any of your doubles though. I'm sure the next person to put in an order will help you out though. Just ask the next person to double up on Hawes and Garland. Remember, these 2 are mostly piano trios, no horns. Nice for a Sunday morning while sipping coffee and reading the paper.

garymd
99% of the time, mono sounds better than the stereo counterpart, at least with LPs. I'm sure it's the same with CDs. I have quite a few of them already but if you don't like them, I'll buy the ones I don't have on CD from you which is probably about 2/3.
