RickRichardson
I have a great pair of vintage 1978 Klipschorns that I need to sell because I have moved to a smaller place and no longer have room for them. I will try to sell them locally in Northern San Diego County, but I know there will be a bigger market if I could ship them. I purchased them locally and so do not have shipping boxes/crates for them. I was able to take them apart and put the four pieces into a minivan for transport. Can anyone tell me what the two parts of these speakers weight and suggest how best to pack them? I know that UPS has a weight limit of 150 lbs., which would not allow for a whole Klipschorn plus its shipping crate. I suppose Klipsch might sell the boxes, but I also imagine the cost, plus the shipping cost to me would be pretty high. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Daddy Dee
The price I recall on Klipsch provided Khorn cartons is $700 or so. I'd think the market in California certainly would yield someone who would make a trip for a local pickup. Everyone knows how pricey it would be to ship Khorns, and thus folks will drive surprising distances to pick them up. My take on it, if someone wants them bad enough to have them shipped, let them contract with Craters and Freighters to do the packing and shipping. That would also reduce your exposure to liability for a packing/shipping issue if damaged. Just my $.02 Good luck on finding the right buyer. psg
He's right! Let the buyer do it! I drove about 9 hours each way to fetch my Klipschorns, and had to wait a few hours to cross into the US, and had to pay about $400 in taxes when I crossed back into Canada. Motivated buyers will drive for them!
oldbuckster
Stay out of shipping..........Bad things happen in shipping.....unless you pay big bucks for real Professional shippers........Let the Buyer deal with it........... Coytee
I drove 12 hours 1-way to get mine. Took couple days and made it a 'visit some friends on the way' trip.

Cal Blacksmith
If I had the corners I would buy them from you. Try Craigs list and the Recycler. Both of them have a larger readership and the buyers could come to pick them up. Good luck with the sale. BTW, How much do you want for them? There might be others on the board that would be interested in them.
rplace
I agree you could easily find a local buyer. However, if you have a motivated out of state guy/gal point them in this direction and let them do all the leg work. I have posted this a few times when people have asked about shipping khorns...I'll cut/paste the original message below. I have posted this before, maybe this will help. North American Van Lines (NAVL) will pick up large bulky items at your door and deliver them to another person's door. I used to do a lot of things with pinball machines. They are big, heavy, bulky and the 50s-70s machines are like old Heritage speakers...they are not replaceable. For about 300 dollars you can have a pinball machine shipped door to door. This is about the same size as a pair of khorns, more or less. It takes about a week. You don't even have to pack them up. They will wrap them in blankets and cart them off. Personally I would do some packing myself them let them wrap my creation in blankets. For a quote, call Michelle 1-800-959-8880 ext 2842 with the two zip codes you need. Many, many pinball people I know use this method with great results. It is my understanding that NAVL prides it self on shipping odd, large, valuable items at reasonable prices. YMMV. Duke Spinner
$700 for boxes, is not only rediculous, but twice what a blanket shipper will charge you
RickRichardson
I would like to thank everyone for their responses. I tried the 800 number for North American Van Lines and they have changed names, but do offer door to door blanket wrapped shipping. As an example, they quoted $464 for a pair shipped to Boulder, Colorado from Southern California. That is very helpful to know and I can offer that as an alternative to local pick up. I am planning on asking $2500 for the pair, which have been professionally refinished by the previous owner to a somewhat darker and redder finish. My wife really loves the look of these speakers and considers them terrific furniture. I also have new, still in the box tweeters and crossovers I got from following the Modification forum. These have not been installed yet but should be great upgrades. I really am sorry to part with these, but have no place to use them in our new house. Thanks again for your help. Daddy Dee
blanket wrapped shipping.... that's a new one on me. I think that is a very good price, though, and they ought to arrive in good order.
RickRichardson
Blanket wrapping is just like a mover would do if he were moving your speakers with your other household items. In fact, that is just how these Klipschorns arrived at my new house. They were wrapped in those moving company blue blankets and then wrapped completely in that thin plastic wrap stuff. The movers used an appliance dolly to move them on and off the truck. I think this is better than trying to put them in a crate or box that might get stuff put on top of it.
