klipschaholik
I need to rejuvenate the caps in my 85 cornwalls with B3 caps but I can't tell what they are. I would appreciate any help on this one.
BEC
I have attached a B3 schematic. Bob Crites KlipschB3network.pdf
klipschaholik
Thanks Bob. That is a 70uf across the woofer, correct?
BEC
Yes, it is a 70 uF. No reason to buy an expensive cap for that one and 68 uF is a more common value to find. Bob
rcarlton
I've done some looking at capacitors but have been intimidated by the number of brands, types and voltage values. For example the 70 µF capacitor can be found in Parts Express for $7.00...RUBY GOLD 70µF 350V Axial capacitor...is that the right one? Couldn't find the 2 or 5µF capacitors in the Parts Express search. Is there a better source? Mouser? Catalog (part) numbers? Looking at a photo of my crossover I'm not sure who is who. I've circled what I think the capacitors are.

rcarlton
BS Button, Looks like the ' or - in the file name is keeping it from showing on the forum.

Deang
You can use two of these paralleled together: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=027-860 Or one of these: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&PartNumber=027-232 Use this for the tweeter. http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=027-856 You can reuse the large white cap -- that's the 70uF for the low pass section. I've circled what I think the capacitors are. Bob is much more of an expert on this than me. He can offer a professional upgrade there. Here is what I would do. Please refer to the image with the green circles Ditch replacing that big white capacitor. If you want to get capacitors from Partexpress, here is what I would get. Replace the Small black capacitor with: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=027-724 Replace the Large black capacitor with: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=027-730 There is no polarity. Just cut the two ends of those red wires on each black capacitor and stick the Theta caps in there of any direction. Solder would be recommended but you may find another way. Todd. In your photo, the little pile of Black Solen caps on the left had side of the board can be replaced with the same. There are three there as I used a 2uF and a 3uF in parallel to achieve the 5uF value for the midcap. jc
jwc
OOPs. Dean posted as I did. Don't want to confuse things...just go with what he said. jc
klipschaholik
Why not replace the 70uf? Is it ageless, immortal or the big ones just never wear out? This is a 68uf Jantzen that Bob said was close enough. http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=027-952&scqty=2 I was also planning to use the Kimber cap 2uf and 5uf 200V caps. Any reason not to use these?
BEC
I think the woofer roll off cap would have to get to be pretty bad for it to start making a difference in the sound that you could hear. In its job, the quality of the cap is relatively unimportant. This cap can do that job. http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=027-356 Bob Crites
klipschaholik
So since your going to pull out the crossovers, solder in some new caps then why not spend $2.60 more to replace two more caps. Are the Kimbers recommended? I know you recommended the sonicaps for the heresys.
BEC
I am sure the Kimbers would be fine. Bob
rcarlton
Any other parts I would need? For example: CABLE TIES 5-1/2" NATURAL W/MOUNT HEAD. Is there a connector for connecting wire to the capacitor?
BEC
I like to use these and a regular cable tie. http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=080-512 Bob
