ben.
The Radio Shack analog one. I think mine was about $25, but I got it almost 10 yrs ago. Cat no 33-2050. Its all you need unless you really want to get lab-precise.
ben.
Looks like they either went up or I'm misremembering... Still, $45 is reasonable. Check your local store - they may have in stock. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103668
DrWho
The ratshack meter is definetly the best bang for the buck. If you ever get the chance, I would borrow a real calibrated meter and use the calibration dial on the side of the ratshack meter to calibrate your cheaper ratshack one - IF you ever want to measure absolute SPL. I'm not sure what you're using the meter for, but uncalibrated they work fine for doing comparison measurements (like making sure every speaker is the same volume). But for absolute SPL, I have found the ratshack meters to be +-5dB from each other [] AND they change based on how new the battery is. Clarence
i just looked on the bay, most were the canned listings. I prefer buying from a real person, like when I sell stuff. the buy it now is a big tip off.
Johncan
All I could find at my local Radio Shack was the digital one. Is that one OK? John
Moderators dtel Posted November 13, 2006 Moderators Share Posted November 13, 2006 Johncan what is in your avatar pic, can't really see, it looks like the back of a van with something white in it ?
Johncan
It is a picture of Neko Case in silk pajamas. Neko is an alt country singer and songwriter.

ben.
John - an analog meter is easier to read for me and for most people, I think. That's all. I'd assume they perform the same (based on nothing but my assumption). Neko Case has a fantastic song that gets a fair amount of time on XM - can't think of the name, but you'd recommend the record? Clarence
All I could find at my local Radio Shack was the digital one. Is that one OK? John i would really take either dig or analog. dont know what i'm going to do with it other than hear exactly how loud 95db +-5 really is. tidmack
Ben, I don't want to steal John's thunder, but I'm a big fan of Neko's too. For starters, I'd give "Furnace Room Lullaby" or "Blacklisted" a try. If you like those, then I'd say go for her newest disc "Fox Confessor". Neko's earlier material on the "Virginian" and "Canadian Amp" have some gems, but I wouldn't buy them first. Neko also has an excellent live disc called "The Tigers Have Spoken". Feel free to email me. Jeff
Johncan
I agree with Jeff. Start with "Furnance Room Lullaby" and then "The Tigers Have Spoken." She is at her best on these two CDs. Her lastest disc, "Fox Confessor", has some non-traditional song structures (almost no choruses or hooks) and it took me a while to like the album. It has two outstanding songs and the rest are OK. ben.
Cool - thanks guys. Is her older stuff as atmospheric as that new song? I love the production. I wish I could remember the title...

ben.
Holy crap! I was just googling around - she's the chick from The New Pornographers!! It's all starting to make sense...
tidmack
Ben, Yes! And and she's with The Sadies too. . .with Kelly Hogan. Kelly's solo stuff is quite good as well. . .I think most of her stuff is on Bloodshot out of Chicago. If you like "Hold on Hold on" and have the extra cash, I'd say pick up Fox Confessor too. I was with John on that one until I saw her on this tour. . .like so many artists, hearing the songs live gives them a whole new spin. Anyways, I like 6 of the 12 songs on Confessor. . . If you get a chance, Neko's Austin City Limits appearance was recently released on DVD. It is incredible! Those LaScalas and Ultra 2's really shine with that disc! Johncan
I think my biggest disappointment with "Fox Confessor" was I wanted it to sound like a Sadies or New Pornographer CD. I love it when Neko belts out her vocals... she has such a strong voice and I wanted "Fox Confessor" to be a indie pop album. I have seen Neko perform live 6 times now (three solo, once with the New Pornographers, and twice with the Sadies) and I am always blown away by her shows. She loves to tell stories and make fun of herself and her band. If you ever get the chance to see her live, GO! OK, now that I have a digital SPL meter, what do I do with it? ben.
Awesome. Thanks again guys. I love it when this parallels come together with artists - like when I bought Dylan's Time Out of Mind on a whim, listened to it, was completely knocked out, then read the liner notes to find that it was recorded by Daniel Lanois - one of my favorite musicians and producers. John - show yourself just how loud 85dB is and how insane these 100+dB all the time guys are.
