I agree, the Shure M97xE is an excellent cartridge for the money and should do just great until you might decide to play with a moving coil design.

Check out this link and save a few bucks at J&R Music World - and pick up a spare stylus as well for a fraction of the price.

That fraction is pretty high, though (about 8/9), comparing the cartridge price at Amazon ($62) to J&R's price on the stylus alone($55)...

Absolutely agree with mas; I used Shure M97HE's until they stopped making them and ran out of my "stockpile". I now use to xE's. Great price (believe it or not, on eBay) and do almost the same job as the V-15 series (V=very expensive...). Reason that the xE is desirable is that the "e" means it's a hyper-elliptical stylus, and tracks very well at lower weights. Dependent on the TT (and making sure it's on a relatively horizontal surface...), it will track reliably at only 1 gram. If you have a lot of old vinyl, that's important to reduce wear.

Hope that helps. Good luck. If you decide on a M-97, and you have trouble finding a reasonable priced one, email me and I'll dig up the name and email of the guy I get them from. He's very reliable.

Yep, except its not so bad at all when J&R will beat prices and ship free!

Amazon is $27 less and they ship for free as well. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Regardless, the cartridge is well worth $89 if you had to pay that to get it.

Thanks for the reply's!

If the $100 mark buys a decent carterage like these, then, how much will I need to spend to get to the next level and what are some options there?

Well, if you had a step-up transformer you could use a Denon DL-103 (LOMC), which can be had new for $148 shipped.

I have bought from this guy and he is very reputable. Keep in mind whatever cartridge you get it needs to be compatible with your tonearm.
