AMIGATHEBEST Posted January 21, 2002 Share Posted January 21, 2002 i was looking at getting the RF-3, RC-3,and RS-3's with a KSW-15 subwoofer for my new sound system. the main thing i want is as much bass as possible. i have a budget of around 2 grand. Im putting them in a fairly small room so i dont really need (or cant afford) referance 7's or even RF-5's.also do you think the KSW-15 sub would give me enought floor shaking wall rattling ear drum perferating bass? ------------------ to much bass???? you cant have to much !@#$in bass!!! You need a dedicated amp for your sub. Take what they say with a grain of salt as money is usually not the deciding factor for them. I have a 100 watt 10" downfiring sub in my living room which is 13 X 15 and it rattles the floorboards quite nicely. It's not a Klipsch but the Klip sub I guarantee digs a bit lower than my sub. A 10 or 12 inch sub with at least 200 watts of power will give you that gut wrenching bass you are striving for. Trust me as I trusted the guy that told me the very same thing. montigue Posted January 21, 2002 Share Posted January 21, 2002 AMIGATHEBEST, listen to me very carefully and if you follow my instructions you will be listening to your bass with a huge grin on your face. Order a SVS 20-39cs ($485 shipped) from svsuboofers.com. Then start looking for an older 2 channel receiver. This is what you want: find an old receiver that has at least 150 watts per channel. The most important thing you are looking for in the receiver is the ohm rating. Make sure the unit has at least a 6 Ohm rating(peferabally 4 ohms but 6 will do, 8 is no good). Most all of the older ones do. The newer ones with this kind of wattage will just clip on you. You can probably find an old used 2 channel amp at a flea market or in your local paper for under $50. Right now im running my SVS 20-39 w an old Pioneer SX-2300 that I bought of my buddy for $30. Its specs are 150w @ 6ohms... I CAN SHAKE EVERY PICTURE EVERY WINDOW EVERYONE OF MY WIFES ORNAMENTS IN MY 2000 SQUARE FOOT HOUSE WITH THIS $ 520 COMBO. when watching actions scenes in pearl harbor, every explosion my living room feels like bombs are dropping on top of me. Yes the amp does get hot at high volumes but so far so good. I just bought the Samson S1000 off ebay for $289, but the pioneer 150 2 channel amp made me proud. So take the advise from someone who has spent countless hours of research reading reviews and swapping amps. This is the way to go if you want bass you can FEEL for the best price possible. I'm curious about your intent to run the non-powered SVS sub off your receiver. Are you sure there is an output on your receiver that will drive a subwoofer? The sub-out is a pre-amp output that will only work if plugged into another amp (like the built-in amp in a sub). The speaker outputs could work, but do you have an extra set of speaker outputs to drive a sub off of? Also, consider a used sub. I just picked up a Velodyne F1500R for not much more than your budget. It was $1700 MSRP about 6 years ago, and it appears to be a pretty strong bass player. dougdrake2 Posted January 21, 2002 Share Posted January 21, 2002 Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I do not believe you can combine the power output from two different amplifiers the way you mentioned. The effect would not be to add the output together (110 + 150). It would be either/or when you are using two separate amplifiers. Bridging refers to taking the 2 channels of a single amplifier unit and using them together. The amplifier unit has to be designed to support bridging mode - some are, some aren't. And, by the way, you don't have to worry about bridging the channels if a single channel is powerful enough (like 150 watts or greater). QUiKSR20 Posted January 21, 2002 Share Posted January 21, 2002 What reciever do you have now? Your sub output is just an output + LFE output most likely for movies. It has no power too it. You really would need an amp or you could run it inline with your main speakers but for a sub like that I would think it would be underpowered I have a KSW-12 and its bassy but not crazy bass like an SVS will give you. Ive personally never heard one but I have heard everyone say there amazing. Tell us what all your components our to your system and then we can get a better feel in what direction to put you in.. Trust me im as broke as the next person heheh im only 22 years old and just got the home theater bug. So for my age and all the crap I gotta pay for i think my systems pretty good still have a lot to hear, see and learn. Hope this helps or helped. This board has tought me alot and i learn more everyday and now after hearing a good amount of new speakers im addicted to the Klipsch Sound. Now im looking foward to hearing heritage stuff!
