  2. Guys....here is what it sounds like now

  3. Summer before last, I gave Klipsch the first of their speakers that I ever heard (1965-shorthorns from the El Dorado, AR choir dept.) to referbish and sell for their fundraiser. I've been a Klipsch fan for a long time. Last summer, my heart broke at the news that the Pilgrimage was cancelled. With the advent of the new forum, I thought it would be a good time to invite Klipsch folks to a Klipsch party at the Klipsch hometown. This is entirely devoid of any knowledge, blessing, or approval from anyone at Klipsch. If it turns out to be an ARKLATEX gathering, we'll have a blast, but I'd like to see some of you Yankees, and others, too. I'll post soon with some details. Since it's Hog country, we'll have to Bar-B-Que one. SSH "The Farm house is not available for rent in 2014", I was told when I called today to rent it for next March. .

  4. You're welcome. You took the same path to a 5.1 setup as I did. That's why I can provide you with these details. If they are going to be mounted against the ceiling, then yes, upside down is a better way to orientate them. In the case of the HIP, boundary loading only helps below ~250Hz...so it's not necessarily placing them to get the SPL up any higher. It's more a matter of maintaining what performance they already have. Keeping them near a wall or ceiling is big assist in that regard. Boundary loading applies to all speakers below their baffle-step frequency, La Scala included.

  5. That does not show the splitter. But I did not know the back came off the IIs that is cool. Maybe you can get good measurements then from someone. Rick

  6. They are right around the 100 mark, conservatively speaking. 92 dB SPL @ 1 watt is their whole-space sensitivity (when flown) from 3 meters (~10ft) away. If you use the inverse square law formula and back that SPL number into a standard 1-meter value, it'll come out to 101.8 And that's not even taking into account boundary loading when at ground zero or near a wall. That would be a resounding NO.

  7. You could put one of the HIPs beside on of your La Scalas, with its cable still connected, if it will reach. Check the level of the La Scala so it matches the other Scala, then switch to the HIP and do the level check again. That way, if you look at the setting, you'll be able to see the difference between the big speaker and the little speaker. La Scalas are rated at 104 dB, so once you know the difference, you'll have an idea of the number for the HIP speaker.

  9. I agree with Willand. All the specs on the receiver list 8 ohms in the manual. I don't see in the manual any listing for switching to a 4 ohm speaker. The specs for the RF7ii say 8 ohm compatible but I don't put much faith in that. My guess is that the impedance dips to 4 ohms or less, as many Klipsch speakers do, and this causes problems with some amps. It is really a shame that Klipsch makes a statement like this. BTW, when I purchased my Forte II I went to the Sony store on Michigan Avenue and saw that a Sony mini-system had shoe box speakers marked 4 ohms. So I bought that and there are no problems with the Forte II 's. I have not measured the impedance of the Forte II but its little brother Quartet dips below 4 ohms. You might want to measure the resistance across the input terminals of the speakers with an ohm meter (multimeter). It is true that this will only report the d.c. resistance or zero Hertz impedance. The actual impedance of speakers vary with frequency. Nonetheless, the impedance of the woofer circuit very often dips to a value which is equivalent to that measured value, and is, in fact, a pure resistance there. At least you'll know something. Regarding the amp. Disconnect the speakers and test the amp with headphones. If that doesn't give some sound in headphones -- I see in the manual there is a reset procedure. There is some chance that the amp is stuck in protected mode. Others here have reported home theater systems coming back to life with a reset. If the amp is actually working: You might put a 4 ohm power resistor in series with the speaker feed. It will probably affect the response but the amps equalizer could solve this. Another would be to improvise an autotransformer with an RS line transformer. I can tell you more if you're interested. Best, WMcD

  10. That a nice set. Good luck with the sale.

  11. This sounds/reads like some unnecessary and confusing turmoil. One person's "cleaning things up" can be another's path to confusion. Reading the posts above makes this clear. It doesn't sound like many people thought something was broken that needed fixing. I suggest leaving things the way they were until a problem is better identified.

  13. After some pondering, I have one more request. Since the off-topic forum is 3 pages down in the forum list, it seems to be unimportant. In the past, posts that are important to the Klipsch forum family are posted in the General area. Posts about deaths, sickness, and other tragedies as well as good news, get together announcements, announcements by non-moderators were posted there. These are not off-topic to me. they are the most pertinent posts that happen here. I don't feel relegating that forum to page 3 of the forum list is a good fit to this community of friends. Would you consider creating a forum within "Klipsch Home Audio" topic for Member Announcements or something like that? I don't know why I am being so sensitive about this, but I guess it makes sense that the new forum layout did relegate the important personal posts to an extremely subordinate position. Edit: How about a Member Announcements in the Announcements area at the very top?

  14. So what you're saying is that our goof-ball, loony-tunes, banteresque subjects need to be initiated in the 'off topic' arena -AND- if we should errantly place them here (or in any erroneous forum) that they will get 'left arrow' dissed and relocated? And after 14 days they will poof-evaporate from their original locations? And you are the ultimate decider of the official 'topic to forum' relevancy............ Forum members should review what is already in the 'off topic' forum because many of our favorite long term threads are now located there and not here. Thnx for the direction and update.

  15. Allow me to ask a stupid question if you will as I've seen this occur in other forums. Other than the fact that threads "should be" in another area, why is it critical that they actually be there? I guess I'm asking why threads have to be monitored and moved. Seems like a lot of work to do something that hasn't happened here in the past. Just curious.

  16. I can see the headlines, "2,000 Klipsch Fans Converge on City Hall in Hope". Lol

  17. That might be our next pilgrimage,,,To go down to hope and set the tone straight with city hall...

  18. I agree. It does come down to money Im sure. Like you said though, Klipsch has paid taxes and employees in that town since the '40's. Why pick on them? Is that the only building in Hope they can have the arts council in? If they do kick her out what is going to happen to the memorial garden? The cement memorial monument? It just really seems like there has to be another place in town the city could choose to occupy. I have donated items, (albeit a small donation), to that museum and I really do not want the items going to New Mexico, I would like it all to stay in Hope!! Bad deal all around.

  21. Yeah, I have seen it. Pretty crazy stuff. Never thought of a built up floor in a high ceiling room to be used as a sub. In the case of the previous poster, it was a stage. Pretty clever. I wonder if I could turn my THT into a full horn using that method. Talk about gain! I would need 38' more horn length.

  23. I second all that. plus+++++++ I have lost count of the number of friends of mine who bought Heresy over the last 37 years after hearing my LaScala. They happily choose the babies of the Klipsch range. Place Heresy into corners and they are superior to a very many speakers of considerably larger dimension. My Dad had a stroke and to simplify things for Mum I removed my Marantz 1200B from their system and connected the Heresy to the speaker terminals on their TV @ 2 watts per channel. Along with the Blue Ray, I connected the CD, cassette deck, VCR directly to the TV and the Heresy make it all possible. I'm a Jub Owner and agree Here is a pic of a new 140db subwoofer during construction under a stage floor, that's in a system we finished last Thursday. While to some of my friends I'm a self confessed propeller head, I would have no reservation in having only a pair of any Heresy as my main system if that's what was most appropriate for my circumstances.

  24. This is the stone for the fireplace and beside the screen. I laid it out to verify coverage. I didn't take the time to lay it out pretty. I have just over 150 sq ft of this. I picked these up this week. They are accoustic cube panels. I tore into one of them and they have 2 layers of 1" rigid fiberglass insulation. looks just like OC703 to me, but much cheaper.

  25. For what it's worth, I personally would shy away from the Tuba HT design. In fact, using his own marketing material, he's claiming 111dB sensitivity from an 18 cu ft design, and compares against a 9 cu ft vented box pushing close to 105dB sensitivity. The irony is that building two of the vented enclosures will put you at the same 111dB midband sensitivity, but then you're not rolling off the low end...effectively gaining a lot more low frequency extension in the same amount of volume. The other thing you have to tackle with an undersized mouth horn design is all of the "pipe resonances" due to the impedance mismatch at the mouth. The overly smoothed response on his website helps mask the crazy ripples in the frequency response caused by this, but if you're unlucky and land those resonances on room modes, then you're going to be in for a surprise. I guess some people get excited by the crazy SPL, but it's totally not going to be the same level of refinement that you're getting from your Khorns. By itself, the Khorn is also way undersized, but where it excels is in acoustically coupling to the corner of the room. The difference is that the Khorn flare is being designed to match the corner flare, whereas the Tuba HT is not. The downside to the TH-SPUD is that being a tapped horn design, it pretty much requires some amount of EQ to tame the response. But once tamed, you're going to get some crazy impressive SPL...and it's going to be real SPL at the lower frequencies, not just the higher frequency stuff that hits you in the chest. Another artifact that I think (not sure yet) tapped horns inject is that they seem to be a bit slow on transients....like it takes some time for the low frequency energy to build. It's really hard to know if this perception is a result of the reduced distortion, or if it's the multiple sound paths inside the horn that need to be taken, but at the end of the day, tapped horns have a very signature sound to them...well at least the 3 I've heard all seem to have similar sonic artifacts. That said, I personally would take the tapped horn sound over the undersized horn sound any day of the week. Btw, you mentioned that you might be doing a second row riser in the room? Have you thought about building a custom horn with a full sized mouth that unloads into the rear corners of the room? And just another idea to throw out there...have you considered a dual zoned bass array approach? The DBA is the only method I know of that can guarantee to address all of the modal response in your room. I've been dying to try a DBA approach that was built into columns since it would totally hide the subwoofers (if the columns fit the decor of the room at least).
