  1. I'm just going to add, where I used to work many years ago, next door was a place called ARCO, and it was Bill Johnson's summertime tinkering lab. I visited every now and then and listened to those gigantic AR amps running through Infinity IRS speakers...truly awesome Bill is a really nice man, very kind and would take time out to play music for me.
  2. Most of the value in this rig is in the SME 3009 Series III tonearm, which I have never had problem setting up with various cartridges (Stanton, Shure, Grado, etc..) I am selling because I will be moving in the near future and I have already gotten rid of my vinyl. Anymore questions/comments, just type away.
  3. I am selling my Thorens TD-160 Super Turntable with an SME Series 3 arm and A Grado Prestige Green Stylus. The turntable works fine except when switching from 33rpm to 45 rpm, sometimes it won;t do it and the platter has to be removed and the belt changed by hand. It goes from 33 to 45 fine. Cosmetic condition is OK, the dustcover has numerous light surface scratches and one that can be felt by touch about 3" long. The arm works great. The stylus has about 80hrs on it. Also receive 3 booklets, the manual for the turntable, the manual for the arm and the ad for the arm. I also have the original shipping box. Also included are the SME RCA cables. Asking $350 + actual UPS shipping. If you think it is too much, Best Offer & if you really want it offer more so the other guy doesn't get it. (I have no clue what is is really worth...) I accept Paypal Cash Xfer(preferred), money orders & hold on checks. please email at asl_wave8@yahoo.com if interested, question, comments! Thanks! I ahve included numerous pics: pic t11 pic t21 pic t31 pic t41 pic t51 pic p11 pic p21 pic p31 manuals
  4. Try this: http://home.hiwaay.net/~rgs/awgcalculator.html
  5. Try toeing them out so that the tweeters are perpendicular to your listening location. This will make them not square to the corners which should attenuate the bass and at the same time, focus your image. If you have lost too much bass, toe them back into the corners until you get the appropriate bass and focus you desire.
  6. I am glad you like your Khorns, but wait until you try your Khorns with tubes... it is quite an experience... it'll happen someday The only way I would go back to SS would be with a McIntosh Autotransformer amp. All the other SS amps I have used don't do the Khorns justice, they didn;t sound bad, they just sound/image better with tube stuff.
  7. Another handy ratio is 10x power for 10db gain. so 104 db @ 1w would make 10w 114db.
  8. Also depends on the efficiency of the drivers, if the 2000w driver had an efficiency of 85db/w/m and the 150w unit had an efficiency of 98db/w/m, the 150w unit would play louder than the 2000w unit if both played at their respective max powers. Kind of like putting .1watt into a khorn and .1watt in an inefficient planar, obviosuly the khorn will play at normal levels and the planar probably wont even be driven. power is irelevent unless the 1watt/m db level is known.
  9. I have the analog, and I like the analog. Can watch the pointer bounce up and down, see the db peaks, etc...
  10. Fortunately I had my khorns before I had my wife She doesn't mind them though, they are tucked away in corners. When I auditioned the khorns, I also listened to the LaScalas and Corns II, but no Belles. I thought the LaScalas were excellent rock'n'roll speakers, but for some reason, I thought they were lacking 'subtleness' for classical/jazz(I'm an all-around listener). The Cornwalls were very good and I almost got them instead of the khorns, but alas, I was single and there was plenty of the green stuff, and thusly, I became an original khorn owner. If you can get them, get the khorns, build walls if you have to
  11. Here is a khorn article: http://www.stereotimes.com/speak080301.shtm
  12. Try turning the horns vertically and see what it sounds like... Get a dowel, mount it to the back of the cabinet and mount the horns to the dowel.
  13. Mcintosh 2200/2205 .... more than enough power to drive to any SPL and beyond, and sounds good too.
  14. I had seen mention before of removing the diode tweeter protection and putting in place a polyswitch and resistor instead. What size resistor(ohms & watts?) and how do I wire it all in (are the polyswitch & resistor in parallel and this hooked up in series inline with the tweeter (+)??) I currently have the K-horn with AK-2 crossover if it matters... thanks!
  15. I'll just add, yes, they are that good!
  16. I tried the HT also and didn;t care for it(although I didnlt use a subwoofer). Maybe if I had a totally seperate room dedicated for theatre only, but aestetics, etc... just didn;t seem right in my living room, I guess 2 massive k-horns are enough. + I couldn;t spend the big bucks for a really quality HT receiver and the one I got did movies real well, but it sucked on 2 ch as compared to a decent 2 ch. system, just my opinion on that. Needless to say, currently I am happier playing movies on my 2 ch system than dealing with the HT system I had.
  17. What advantages are there for using a bypass cap? For instance, in the ALK crossover a 39uF cap is bypassed with a 1uF cap, electrically, what is happening vs. using a single 40uF cap? What about lower values, using a 1.5uF & .47uF cap in place of a 2uF cap, same advantages or negligible? TIA, Jeff
  18. I like Kimber Kable, my personal preference.
  19. Don't forget sacrificial deaths such as in Independence Day and Armageddon.
  20. I am thinking of upgrading my AK-2 to AK-3 xover and have some questions which hopefully can be answered! I have attached a .pdf schematic of my idea. 1> The AK-3 xover has a T4A tapped coil while my AK-2 has a T5A tapped coil, can I use the T5A in the AK-3 network and what would be the difference??? 2> The 13uF cap going to the aquawker I have changed to 12uf+1uF bypass, is this acceptable and would it sound better? 3> Not directly related to xovers, but re: the protection diode on the tweeter, is the sound difference noticeable enough to merit removing this protective device? thanks! 21. I've got the Cingular Family plan, 2 free phones, $70/month for both phones(includes $10 in taxes, etc) for 500 prime time minutes, 5000 off time minutes, unlimited mobile-mobile, no roaming charges and free long distance. Figure at 25 cents/minute, 10 minutes per day = 300 minutes/month = $75.00/month per phone Unless you plan on only talking maybe 30 minutes/month, pay as you go does not seem cost effective to me.
  22. Chinoloco, SCE does the same thing in s. California, during peak hours, voltage can run anywhere from 103 to 107 volts, these aren't transitory dips but actually steady state voltages. So the dips are much lower. You'd figure with SCE charging 25 cents per kWH, they'd at least provide decent electricity.
  23. My vote is for the Cornwalls, they can hold their own.
