  1. Nice work. Craig, Why does it always look like the Eico has less parts than the Scott? Is it just an optical illusion?
  2. Mint Dynaco IV's for a pitance and everyone wants to get picky.
  3. The two speakers DO NOT use the same horn. Also, according to the signature block, looks like he is already running a second system with RB-5's. At any rate, the RB-3's employ the newest driver technology. You should always go to the next level if you can afford it.
  4. Yes, they are pentode push-pull.
  5. Michael Hurd is next, then Kelly. I really enjoyed the book, so much so I read through it twice. I read the chapter, "The Speaker Years" -- many more times. It was nice to find out that he just wasn't brilliant, but decent and good as well. I may meet him someday yet.
  6. "Interesting, so what are the limitless connection possibilties?" I have no idea, I don't do amplifiers. What preamp are you using in front of the ST-70? I don't know what to think about what you just said. Is your ST-70 running straight-up PP/Ultra-Linear? I sure wouldn't characterize the Quicksilvers that way (lacking in bandwidth). Hey! Check this out...
  7. Chris, I'm curious here about your description. Is it that the Wright's are more 'articulate', which is a word I use to describe a systems ability to keep everything intact and free from congestion during complex passages -- or is it they have a higher degree of 'immediacy', in the sense of more low level detail resolving power -- like taking things normally layered deep in the music, and bringing it to the top? The reason I ask is because based on my limited experience -- I would actually use the former to describe good push-pull, and the latter to describe SET.
  8. I'm with Kenrat on this one. Something like that shows up on my wall and it's definitely getting the shotgun.
  9. Like Josh said, THX is a set of standards, it is not implementation of technology. Think about this for a minute: I've seen THX certified mini-systems, and other systems of much better quality with no certification. Clearly, what started out as a good idea -- has now been reduced to a marketing scheme.
  10. The midrange horn in the big Legends adds a sense of immediacy and realism that some feel is lacking in Reference. It's really just a perception thing, and also has a lot to do with what one has grown used to. When I first saw the big KLF's, I wanted to like to them. I just found them too forward for my taste. No one can predict what you will prefer -- you really just have to go listen.
  11. No, not your thing -- but cool amps. Basically 1/2 of a Stereo 70 in a monoblock design. Very nice looking and just the right amount of power for most folks. Something of interest regarding the EL-34. "...the big brother of the EL84/6BQ5 was the EL34. It has one of the narrowest envelopes for an output tube and was equally popular during that time period. Like the smaller one I noticed it too seemed to have better speed and tighter bottom end than similar larger envelope tubes. The EL34 also has a unique feature in that it is the only pentode made that can be wired in true triode for lack of internal jumpers between the grids. This gives limitless possibilities for how you combine the grids and plate to accomplish triode operation."
  12. What did Kelly say that you wished you would have ignored? I don't always agree with him, but taking is advice always introduced me to something really cool in the sound.
  13. ...anyone from here land these? $675. I hate having to live within my means. http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?ampstube&1054758913&class&3&4&
  14. THAT sounds like a lot of work. I hope it pays off for you. I'd be happy just to be able to afford a matching set of Heresies for my Cornwalls, and try the little Hafler box Dynaco still sells.
  15. Yeah, but you cheated your Denon by putting the weany cables on it. Not fair! Which Monsters do you have on the Denon? Really cheap, or something better like the M550i? You would actually notice more differences if you gave in to more time to compare. Detailed comparing is fatiquing in itself though. A dead on system I use is only two or three discs I am VERY familiar with. Each disc is a different music type, and I play the crap out of them over a week or so. Tubes are the miracle cure for digital. Yes?
  16. Aren't these the same ones you tried to sell a couple of years ago? Did you ever find the Cornwalls you wanted? Who in their right mind would trade a gorgeous set of two-ways for a pair of earbleeders?
  17. "Every NBS cable employs the circuitry of a Passive Frequency Inductance Network (PFIN) combined with hand-made construction and unconventional use of silver shielding. The higher the line of NBS cable, the more sophisticated the PFIN circuitry becomes. Unique wire-weave patterns and the use of the finest materials available contribute further to the world-renowned NBS Sound." "The RCA connectors employed on the SIGNATURE-II through STATEMENT lines are the exclusive design of Walter Fields. These connectors are manufactured of gold-plated beryllium copper for greater conductance and a specially plated chromium barrel to reject RFI and EMI. The combined result puts the NBS philosophy into practice by achieving a dramatically lowered noise floor, maximal dynamic range, and the ultimate in information retrieval. The quality craftsmanship of NBS cables allows us to extend a life-time warranty to the original owner." All together now: BULLSH!T
  18. I love it when Gil does that. Gil, do you have any thoughts on optimal port function in relationship to the wall behind them? That is -- a formula or something for minimal distance so performance of the port(s) is not impeded?
  19. Thicker wire isn't always better. An important part of the inductors overall function is it's DCR. It's part of the original circuit. Personally, I feel DCR match is critical in the high frequency part of the crossover. If you get the inductance right, and miss the DCR -- it will completely change how the speaker sounds.
  20. I ended up with a RF-7 two-channel rig that jams tight and sweet up to 110 db without strain or pain. I generally listen at 90 to 95 db. Late at night it's the Cornwalls at 75db.
  21. That's excellent work. Neato! More caulk my friend, more caulk!!
  22. I hate your avatar. Really. The only thing I would consider doing to RF-5s is the same thing I did to my RF-7s -- rebuild the crossovers with better parts. I wouldn't mess with the damping.
