  1. I want to get a pair to try out. What are the important charateristics I should be looking for? As usual, thanks for your inputs. Ki
  2. Nice article for all Klipsch fans on current May issue of Home Theather magazine. Ki
  3. What would be a decent prices for 7C in excellent condition? Ki
  4. Somehow the picture icon in the Message area is not working for me. It shows properly when I compose the message but it dissapears after posting. I have to attach the photo as a file.
  5. Take a look at the crossover and the tweeter's ceramic magnet in the distance. Ki
  6. It is best to split your preamp out from the HK930 playing the Belle Klipsches at full range and feed your subs with same signal and match the sound pressure level. The crossover built in the ULD-15II is not very good to my ears. The ULD-15II has built in crossover point of 80Hz on DIP resistor chip on later version and DIP chip socket and resistors soldered in for LP and HP points on earlier version. I can help you if you are interested in changing the crossover points on both versions. On the other hand, judging from my personal experiences with my Belle Klipsches and ULD-15IIs, 80Hz is about right for HP point but Velodyne's built-in crossover has close to 8dB/oct slop for LP and will affect your main Belle Klispches by playing unwanted music information through the sub at lower lever but still hear it if you would get closer. I have decommissioned my ULD-15IIs for a while but when I used them, I had set their crossover points to 200Hz and used external crossover set at 16dB/oct and 40Hz LP for better performance. Hope it helps. Ki
  7. In 2004, I purchased a single KB WAL #17 Khorn with the information that it was a 1992 model. Its S/N is 0052935336. According to the Klipsch S/N format doc, it would be 1992 model made on 5th day of the year or 2000 model made in last week of the year. Which is it?
  8. Somehow the photos didn't make it. So here it goes... Ki
  9. At last, I am trimming down my Klipsch speakers...just ran out of room. The single KB WAL #17 Khorn has S/N 005293536. I have always thought that it was made in 1992 but looking at the serial number again, it might be a 2000 model. However, it shows some wear and tear. It would make an ultimate center channel (w/false corner) for a forum member who already has Khorns for the L and R. Pick up would be much appreciated. I would like to get $1100 for the single speaker. The pair of KB WAL LAC17s have S/N KBWL17-0249 0001 and 0002. These are 2002 model with their original parts and in walnut lacquer satin finish and in excellent conditions but sure there are few marks here and there, if you would look very closely. I would like to get $4300. I have more photos that can be sent. Let me know via PM if you have any questions. The dog can be included in the deal but if so, you'll have to submit a replacement wife (must be one with low maintenance requirement and high tolerance for many audio toys in the house). Ki
  10. Coytee: David Lanz is one of my favorate "new age" piano players. According to the concert program I attended in Seoul, Korea recently, he is credited with starting the "new age" scene in the '80s. I also learned that he lives in the Seattle area... Nightfall is indeed his best work, IMO as well. I used to like James Galway...until he stormed out of a concert preformance in Charlotte, NC only after one song... in the late '80s because there was a baby crying in the audience. He never returned even after the poor mother took the baby and herself out of the hall. Own few of the Frank Mills CDs and LPs... also picked up his Canadian music CD while driving around Canadian Rockies... The melodies are nice but he started to play on electric piano on most of his later releases that's flat and doesn't sound good at all to my ears... Now for something completely different: not really different - but other solo piano artists I like (you would like too if you like David Lanz) George Winston (as mentioned here) Yuhki Kuramoto (my current favorate - truely original melodies that are different and beautiful. He also plays cover songs including Music Box Dnacer in his "Time for Love" CD) Christopher Peacock (another North West solo piano player... Most of his CDs are soft cover tunes) And there are so many more... playing solo piano music through tubes got me hooked on Khorns... even my other fine speakers such as Quads and B&Ws, don't do justice to piano as the Khorns do to my ears. Ki
  11. I have used Heresy I's in various positions including as a center channel and also own an Academy. My preference is the Heresy for center duty. Academy sounds like a small speaker whereas Heresy has fuller voice - not as full as other brothers and the sister (Belle Klipsch) in the Heritege family tree though,,, IMO. Ki
  12. Do any of you know the source for OEM replacement or aftermarket stylus for Type III? I have the Type III body from my old college days without the stylus. It would be good to revive it. Ki
  13. Assuming your Sony TV is CRT based, only the Academy is magentically shielded. So the Heresy sitting on top of your TV will not work. Ki
  14. Tim: Thanks for your input. I don't wont two disks you mentioned but would guess that they were discrete 5 channel mix from their old CD-4 without dedicated sub channel. I had no problem decoding DTS and my latest player is about three months old. Do you know the key stroke it takes to find out what version of firmware I have? I will try the setup menu for one. And let me know the latest firmware you have, I will compare it to what I have. Thanks, Ki
  15. THX1138: I have the same DVD player but have no problem with subwoofer analog output playing all formats it support. There are many DVD-A and multichannel SACD disks that does not have subwoofer output in its mix. I would suggest obtaiing Chesky, Telarc, or other reference DVD-A and multichannel SACD and check for the subwoofer output. I do have a question for you. I have gone through three different HD841 players with the same problem of DVD-A playing about ~15 min and its ananlog outputs and digital output stoping while the disk is still spinning and the counter is going along fine. I would then stop the player and restart and it would be fine for another ~15 min. Did you experience any problems with DVD-As? All of the SACDs including multichannel SACDs are playing fine. Ki
  16. So what's the best guess on final price? Certainly a collector's item...yummy.... Ki
  17. My CX-1 does not have loudness control as found on CX-2 as I remember. The CX-1 has only Bass and Treble - I guess more for the relatively purists... The CX-2 has more I/Os including variable loudness control and video switching which I didn't need at the time. In addition, I don't think you were aware but the MX-1 is not a "full" or conventional Class A amp like older Krells with full current available and drawn all the time including when idling - thus it doubles as room heater for wet Seattle winter. The MX-1 uses Yamaha's own Hyperbolic Conversion Amplification method that runs cool and supposed to be "better" according to Yamaha... what more can a man ask for?.... I don't have LS' but do have Belle Klipsches. I will try BKs with the CX-1/MX-1 combo when I am back home.
  18. As I recall the new MX-1 was about $1200 and CX-1 was close to it. It seems people are voting for MX-1 with their wallet. BTW, the CX-1 is a good functional preamp but nothing to write home about in comparison to other highend SS preamps. But considering their cost, it's relatively good. It lacks a bit of transparency sonically and a second set of outputs would have been nice but the remote is nice to have. I am not sure what you can buy one these days but if you are seeking performance, go with the Peach tube preamp. Peach and MX-1 is also a nice set up for modern full range speakers.
  19. MX-1 is a gem in my opinion. However, what I had experienced with highly sensitive Klipschorns, it's not as good match as other smaller tube amps with - that tube magic - to my ears. In comparison to Krell amp driving more demanding and modern speakers such as B&W Nautilus 800s, it's quite impressive. MX-1 has the similar clarity, definition, and dynamics in reasonble volume level as the Krell FPB700Cx. The Krell has more air on top and more body in bass but sometimes I prefer MX-1 especially in the summer time... It's a keeper. Ki
  20. Will certainly give a call...wish I had known about it early last year when I threw away close to $1200 paying for wood crates for Khorns and air freighting them to Seattle only to find them in cardboard boxes with minimal Styrofoam protections. I was lucky to have no damages to the Khorns but got screwed on the crating. They deducted $50 from the total bill when I complained... Well, I have finally ran out of rooms for my beloved Klipsch speakers and have been thinking about letting some of them leave my house and bring joy to other under previllaged folks (pure sonicwise). I will post more details when I return home next week end if some of you would be interested. Ki
  21. HK Citation II Heathkit W5Ms should be on the list..., IMO. Ki
  22. In one of my other weak moments, I almost bougt them from Russell. About three months ago, I had sent him a US Postal Money Order for a Mac amp he had and it got lost... In the process of trying to retrieve the MO, I got to talk to Russell for a long time. He is indeed knowledgeable about lots of speakers. Ultimately, he wanted $7500 for them. Considering their condition, it seemed reasonable at the time (I said I was weak). He was pretty firm on the price and thinks they are worth a lot more. I have more photos of the speakers he had sent me somewhere in the house. I will post them if I can find the CD. Ki
  23. Few years ago my previous Krell 700Cx SS amp was destroyed by a sick Sonic Frontiers Line 3 tube preamp when it went South. I am not sure if it was the DC leak problem with SF Line 3 but the Krell had to be sent back to the factorty. Since then I have a different Krell 700Cx and have a set of internal jumpers (to activate caps in the signal path) to protec it from tube preamp DC leaks.
  24. In another forty years, people will still desire Khorns along with Marantz 8B and other classic audio gear for certain. On the other hand, the RF7s...probably not. IMHO
  25. IKF: Have you already ordered the special "Infocus to DVI" converter/cable from Infocus? That's what I ended up getting for 7200. If this player is pure for movies, I would suggest to go with low cost Samsung 841 DVD/Multiformat music player ($150) with DVI output. We watch little movie but I watch OTA HDTV broadcasts more. It served me well considering low investment. In contrast to some of the HT magazine reviews, its video performance is excellent through DVI. Let me know if you need more info on the player that I think is one of the best bet for a non-videophile player. I figured the moment I would buy the megabucks highend DVD player for video, there'll be the HD player available. Ki
