  1. For anyone who has La Scalas here is a mod that made a big difference in the sound. I built a 2 foot by 2 foot 7 inch high riser for each speaker. Before the riser the tweeter was at my chin level and the mid horn was at my upper chest while sitting on my couch. Now with the riser the tweeter is just above my eye level and the mid horn is centered on my ear level. This really helped with some of the harshness people say La Scalas have since the tweeter is closes to your ears and the bass bin is at your leg level the sound field is lower. If you have a room that lets you put your chair back 15-20 feet you would probably not need this mod. But I'm 10 feet away so it helps alot!! I have 2 70 pound sand bags under the rug(need to find a better rug) that is supose to be another tweak. But since I'm not going to be heaving 140 pounds of sand off each speaker and listen and then put 140 pounds of sand back on each speaker and compare the difference I'll say it helps just for my ego. Not sure of the height of the Cornwalls but this might work also. Xman
  2. And the final piece- the sub that draws people out of their houses at 4:00 A.M. in their underwear and give my house dirty looks. Luckly felt the love from the neighbor and turned down the sub before he called the cops. Don't use my sub late any more. Just went and saw the new Star Wars movie and the big screen was great but the size of the movie theater takes away from the surround sound effects. When I watch Revenge of the Sith later this year on DVD I will hear so much more in the surround sound effects. I think theaters should just buy La Scalas and that would solve the problem. Put 15-20 La Scalas in a movie theater and DAMN!!! Xman
  3. A better view of the 20s behind the couch.
  4. Behing my couch are the KLF 20s which were a huge difference from the SB3 that were the original rear speakers.
  5. Sorry about the bad pics all I have is a digital camera on my camecorder that is 1 m. Below the tv is my La Scala center channel. I had a KLF C7 center channel but upgraded when this single LS came up on Ebay. The tv weighs close to 300 pounds and some how I got it ontop of the speaker without killing my back.
  6. This is my right side of HT. Next to my Cayin TA 30 tube amp is my Luxman preamp and below it is a NAD C542 CDplayer. I have a Luxman system selector so I can switch which preamp is going to the Cayin tube amp.
  7. This is the left and center La Scalas with my 34 in Sony, tv is the last upgrade except a bigger house to put this stuff in. My living room is 15 X 15 X 8 so with 3 La Scalas up front and a pair of KLF 20s and a RSW 12 it does not take much to get loud in my living room. I'm probably going to be in this house another 3 years so next year when 50 inch plasmas drop in price I may just get one. I'm running the HT with a Denon 4800 A/V receiver and a Denon 2900 DVD player and using a Cayin TA 30 tube amp running my left and right speakers. Xman
  8. Did you feel like you were going to fall into the abyss?? xman
  9. I was looking at the pic of his KHorn and the top of my La Scalas come up to the bottom of the midrange horn on the KHorns. Without the risers the LS come up to the top of the bass section. Xman
  10. Dean what did you mean by "The best thing you can do with a pair of LaScalas that are sitting out in the open with no corner reinforcement or subwoofer, is to give up some sensitivity and drop to taps 4 and 3 like the Cornwall"? When I got my La Scalas I made 7 inch risers that I put the LS on, it realy helped smooth out the sound. Mine are close to the corners but not all the way into the corners which helped also. My LS are the 2004 models would I still be able to drop to taps 4 and 3 with the new crossovers? Xman
  11. Now for those of you who have gone to a IMAX theater that is a experience you cannnot recreate at home!!! For those who don't know what it is imagine a screen that is ( not sure of these guesstamations) about 3 times higher and 2 times wider with a incredible sound system. The picture is crystal clear and sharp. The only downside is normal movies are not filmed using IMAX cameras so they can be shown on IMAX screens but they can only be blown up to a certain point. I saw Jurrasic Park at a Imax and seeing the TRex at life size is very cool!! Xman
  12. Here is my advice to movie theaters La Scalas all the way around with 8-10 of the 18 inch pro subs Klipsch has. I think sound is more important than screen size with todays 5.1-7.1 soundtracks. When I finished my first home theater I was using a 13 inch tv but with KLF 20s, C7 center, SB3 as rears it was incredible. Now I have La Scalas for my front and center speakers with KLF 20s as my rears with a RSW 12 sub and even though LOTR-Return of the King had a bigger picture I enjoyed it more at home with a 34 inch tv. Don't get me wrong watching the new star wars movie on the big screen was great but when it comes out on DVD and I watch it on my measly little 34 inch tv with my HT set up it blows away the movie theater. You have so much more control over the sound at home is why it is better. Explosion not loud enough for you then turn up the sub, treble too bright turn it down, vocals not loud enough turn up the center speaker only, etc. I think I'll look into a 110 inch projection screen tv and when the quality and price equal my 34 inch I'll get one. Then I won't bother with movie theaters at all. Xman
  13. I agree with you on the supposed decline in Luxman products. In the Late 80s and early 90s I bought 2 Luxman recievers that were considered the lowest end of the Luxman reciever line and they both had a very good sound. If I remember right Luxman was bought by Alpine and it seemed like then that Luxman started to sell product lines in the US that were aimed more at a target market that wanted good quality sound at a mid priced componets. My Luxman receivers cost around $550 each and for the time that was not a cheap componet but it was not top quality either but they sounded very good with my Heresys. Now what was being sold back in Japan at the time I don't know but I bet Luxman had their top of the line stuff that was not being sold in the US. Now the C300 preamp and my L505f int amp are Luxman at their best. I got my L505f from audiocubes2.com which sells Japanese HIFI equipement shipped from Japan. I contacted Luxman and they have been looking for a US dealer for some time but I don't think they want to mess with the US Market. Luxman has a new preamp out that I would love to try. The CU-80, instead of a 2 channel preamp they made a 5.1 channel preamp to use with DVD players for Home Theater or DVD Audio and Superaudio Discs. The preamp does not do any decoding it leaves that to the DVD player. It is not cheap in Japan you could find it between $5000-6000 but on the website I bought my Luxman from it's closer to $6500. If anyone is curious about todays Luxman products go to www.audiocubes2.com. Xman
  14. I have a Luxman C300 preamp that has a great sound with my La Scalals and tube amp. Replaced it with a 2004 Luxman int amp that I'm using as a preamp only with even better results! Luxman in the past 10 years has tried to go back to the quality they had back in the 60s and 70s and if my Luxman L505f int amp is any indication they have done it. I would love to compare some of the clalssic Luxman preamps with my new Luxman. As a int amp it is a good unit but just using it as a preamp it is a very good preamp. Having trouble posting pics of both units but Luxman has always made their products sound incredible and look just as good. Xman
  15. I compared the Jolida to the NAD C542. The Jolida had a quiter background but the highs seemed to be dull or very laid back compared to the C542. I was using a Luxman C300 SS preamp(1983-85) with a Cayin TA 30 tube int amp and 2004 La Scalas. The preamp has bass and treble so I adjusted the treble to see if I adjust it but I did not like the highs on the Jolida. I want to stress that I am not bad mouthing the Jolida it beat my NAD C542 in every aspect except in the highs. Someone else from this forum could have been with me and liked the sound of the Jolida better. With a different preamp it might sound better than the C542 to me. A local hifi store let me borrow the Jolida for a couple of days to compare on my system which I'm glad I did. Find a hifi store(not best buy or ultimate elec, etc) leave a deposit on a demo unit and pick it up right before they close on Sat and bring it back on Monday. This way you can demo it on your system. I also own the Denon 2900 and DVD A and SACDs in most cases sound better than CDs played on my NAD. But CDs played in both players sounds better in the NAD. Whatever your choice on a CD player make sure the store will take back the player if you don't like it. That is why taking home the demo model will save you some hassles. Good luck with your choice
  16. Most of the time I hear it is better to use a tube preamp with a SS amp so I guess I'm bass ackwards! I use a 2004 Luxman int amp as a preamp with a Cayin TA 30 tube int amp with very good results. Next year I want to try tubes for both preamp and amp. If you have a good SS preamp with a good tube amp then you can get very good results. My stuff works great together other components may not work as well together. Try whatever combo you want to and if it does not work then sell it and try something else. Xman
  17. My living room is 15 X 15 X 8 and when I had KLF 20s I could turn the volume up very very loud before I considered it too much. Now with my 2004 La Scalas they overpower the room at lower levels. By overpowering I mean they sound incredible up to a semi loud point and then you go into the not able to talk to the person next to you point which the KLF 20s still sounded incredible but the La Scalas just overpower you. I'm probably going louder than when I had my KLF 20s but don't realize it. Also the La Scala has bigger horns and DB. Xman
  18. I bought a new pair in 2004 for $3500 including tax and they have the grilles. The bass is very tight and you feel it in your chest but for classical and other music a sub would help. I made risers bout 6 inches high that raise the top of the speakers to around 42 inches and they sound much better, not as bright. Without the risers the tweeter is at my chin level and midgrange is at my upper chest. So the highs are very noticable and the midrange is too low. With the risers the tweeter is just level with my eyes and midrange is centered on my face and it makes a very big difference in the sound. I just added a 1976 single La Scala with a new croosover from BEC for my center channel, replaced a C7. For music the C7 sounded better with the 2 LSs but for movies the single LS center channel makes a huge difference when whatching a movie. Since the single LS is a 1976 model it may not match well with a pair of 2004 La Scalas. But it still sound fantastic. Xman
  19. I have the RSW 12 and it does great with both music and movies. Just saw Master and Commander and it is a excellent soundtrack to give a sub some action. Cannot comment on the other sub. Xman
  20. Order a new pair of La Scalas in Nov of 2003 waited until March of 2004 to get them and then one of the tweeters did not work. They sent a replacement for the crossover and the tweeter. It sucked that the tweeter did not work but Klipsch did not have to send a replacement for the crossover but they did. I work with computers and you can test it and it will work fine. But ship it to the customer and it has a problem. Does not mean I wasn't upset about the tweeter but Klipsch customer service did a great job for me! Xman
  21. Well about 90 % of concerts I've gone to have sounded like crap, plus you have the whisler whistling in my left ear and the yeahaw man yeahawing in my right ear, parking problems, and crowds, oh yeah and all the people on whatever flavor of mind altering spices that lead to the fights, and yeahmen, whislers, etc. To me a concert is any venue that will hold at least 1000 people. I live in Austin, TX and one of the few concerts that was worth the money was BB King with Jimmy Vaughn. Also saw the Reverend Horton Heat at Antoines, holds 300-450, and it was a great show. But 99% of the time my house(I can kick out whisler and yeahaw man), my system(if the sound sucks I can addjust it to my liking or kick the band out), and the sound quality of CDs or DVDAs, SACDs or DVD concerts sound better and beats the live thing(plus you pay alot less and can play it over and over, etc). Don't get me wrong there are great concerts by bands but I guess for me the negatives outway the positives. I still go to live performances but if it is more than $20 I don't go don't care who it is. Sorry about being so anti social with the concerts but when you are paying that much money the returns on your investment do not seem worth it but that's just me. Xman
  22. Go for it!! I had been using a C7 with my La scalas which did a better job on center channel music than with movies. Easter Sunday I bought a single La Scala from a guy in Houston and had Bob Crites build me a new crossover for it. Now I can better understand vocals during action and any special effects going thru the center channel now sound incredible! My rear speakers are KLF 20s and when they were my fronts they overpowered my C7. The 30s have 12 inch woofers and the 20s have 10 inch woofers, high and mid horns are the same. It would be like all the people who have the KHorns with a La Scala or Belle for a center channel. If it is a good deal then grab it, just make sure everything works ok. Xman
  23. Usually on SACD and DVD Audio discs I turn down the rear channels and go with 3 channel audio in front. Now for ones like Dark Side of the Moon you have to go with all channels!! Xman
  24. I just picked up a single 1975 La Scala for my center channel. It has hanging bolts still in it but the cabinet is in a little better shape than this one. BEC, forum member, built a new crossover for it should be waiting for me at home tonight. I'll post pic when I get it in General, HT, and 2/3 channel. It sounds decent for a 30 year old speaker so it should sound really good witha a new crossover. Xman
