  1. Two 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel will give you a pair at 4ohms. Two 4ohm pairs wired in series will put you back at 8 ohm total load presented to the amp. This will probably work but you'll have to experiment to find out.
  2. I guess some assembly is required. Crossovers are not included. Bi-amp or tri-amp is recommended. How does one tri-amp a two driver speaker?
  3. Cool looking horns. Too bad there's no driver in the bass bin.
  4. Sign me up to beta test various mixes. Also sign me up to buy a final version.
  5. AA's are '74 with new polypropylene caps. AL's are probably 79-80.
  6. Would it be possible to do a software analysis on the AL network? I've got them in my La Scalas and think they sound pretty good. The seem more lively than the AAs in my Belles
  7. I was looking for oak, but now I've decided to try a crossover upgrade on my Fortes instead. I can't imagine the bass of an academy competing with the Forte woofer and passive. Sorry to be fickel about this but Frzn has a good point on this one.
  8. As a first step you could replace the caps with metalized polypropolyne. You'll hear a big difference, probably not as good as ALK's work though. I've done the cap replacement bit in my type AA x-overs in my khorns and although they were a huge improvement over the 30 year old caps, I'm considering AL's extreme slope networks as they are said to make the sweet spot much larger in the room. They are also said to be a HUGE improvement in detail over even the type A universals. As you can tell, I'm trying to talk myself into this.
  9. Charles, Thanks for the reality check. I'll contact you later for x-over details. David
  10. I think that's the one that I was bidding on. It went for close ot $700.00.
  11. Opinions are wanted on the Academy versus RC-7. I've tried to get an Academy, but they are hard to find and very expensive. One I was bidding on went for $678.00, more than a new RC-7. I'll be using either an academy or an rc-7 in an otherwise all heretige system. Currently I'm using Forte for the center channel and I'm hoping a real center unit would make an improvement. Opinions on this issue would be appreciated as well. Thanks, David
  12. I'd like to get an academy in non-black finish. If anyone is interested in upgrading to RC-7, I'd be interested in the old acacemy. I could trade a pair of Forte or pay cash. Thanks, David
  13. Those caps don't look original for '74 Belles. They should be motor runs.
  14. Check your interconnect cables. Get them away from the power cords. Good luck.
  15. About a week ago someone from Barre, VT posted on this forum that he got a pair of Cornwalls shipped from Maine. Today I delivered a pair of Cornwalls to Maine from VT, thereby restoring balance on the East Coast by adhearing to the natural laws of conservation of Cornwalls.
  16. I have had better luck using a cabinet scraper than sanding. Much faster and does a nice job. Stain and then varnish following the directions on the stain can.
  17. They are different in impediance. This is important for RF and high frequency feeds such as cable. You'll not hear the difference in audio applications such as patch cords.
  18. XLR is used professionally for more robust noise rejection, typically in long low level signal paths such as mic cords. If the ambiant electrical noise is high in your environment you may see a reduction in humm or hiss by using XLR. In a typical home environment I doubt you will see a difference. I've never tried it though.
  19. The interconnect cables are not connected in circuit as a capacitor. The ground side goes from ground to ground while the hot side goes from signal out to signal in. How much capacitance is there on one leg of a capacitor? None. The signal in a coax cable is effectively in a faraday cage just like the rest of any SS circuit inside the metal box.
  20. A monoblock is a single channel amplifier. If you filter the frequencies coming out of your pre-amp you could send the bass through a monoblock and then into the bass section of the speaker, same with the mid and high ranges. There's probably very little advantage to doing this since that's what your crossover network is supposed to do. Note that if you're committed to bi-wiring your speakers you could just as easily use a stereo amp for each speaker with one channel serving the bass and the other serving the mid and high. Monoblocks are probably most useful for odd configurations like PKW's three channel stereo setup or other odd configurations. Some would claim that multiple monoblocks are a cleaner solution than multichannel units. The power cords for a 7.1 system built of mono-blocks get pretty demanding on their own. Another thing to consider if money is an issue is that you can build one or two channels at a time with monoblocks. Welcome and have fun.
  21. Forte was offered in both 4 and 8 ohm impediance. I ordered a set in 1986 with the 4 ohm spec. The connection pannel in the back is round instead of square, it is marked 4 ohm and as I remember it was only available in mahogony. There is some speculation that there was no difference except for the label. Owning a pair of each, I should do a public service and open them up. Don't hold your breath though.
  22. The need to EQ or not is a function of the room as much as the equipment. Superimpose hearing loss as a function of frequency and age of listener and you have a situation where EQ could easily be justified. BTW tubes do not preclude the use of an EQ any more than the use of a CD
  23. Hold out for the high temperature superconductor cables. Just think, no loss of power at all due to cable resistance. It'll be fun keeping them cold with liquid nitrogen too. What an improvement over the old fashoned way of superconducting with liquid helium. Way more ecconomical over the years!
  24. Here's the sick part, I just sold a pair of CW II to a guy in Maine and now I've got to deliver. I live in Vermont! Think of what a more logical swap could have accomplished. I think we need a swap page or something.
