  1. Thanks LonestarBlues.... this thread has listed out a wealth of potential artists that I need to look at. I have been listening to country from the 60's and 70's. Stuff like Charlie Pride, Lynn Anderson, Jeannie C Riley, Billie Jo Spears, Merle Haggard, Glen Campbell, Charlie Rich... this list goes on. Here in Houston, we have 97.1 Country Classics, country from the 60's through the 80's. It's a good station, but unfortunetly they stick with mostly hits. So, I'm always searching for artists that I'm not familure with. You post has helped in that respect. Rock on dude. ..... Brad
  2. Moderator --- As with a previous off topic thread, I ask you to remove this thread... It has no place in this forum. Too much noise.
  3. I'm here because in the 70's I received my first dose of stereo, administered via four Cerwin Vegas. The system left an ever lasting impression on me. I now have more refined taste and need to receive my doses via Klipsch horns. I've lived just about everywhere, but have been in Houston for about 15 years now. Just turned 40..... Brad
  4. Insufferable? Perhaps his parents slaped him around as a kid? ---------------- On 2/29/2004 7:38:31 PM paulparrot wrote: 14th? You mean you counted?! You'd me surprised at what people think sounds good. You're giving a lot more credit than is due if you think everyone turns the volume down when it sounds bad. Innocent people can be ensnared by this nonsensical MAGIC talk. Is that what you want to happen? ----------------
  5. I think that Allan and Kelly must have it right. The recordings that I was referring to seem to have a sense of the room. There are echo's, ambient noises, a sense of performance. The vocals in many ways seem to just jump out (in a good way), perhaps this type of recording is well suited for my system, tubes and horns. Certainly enjoyable. Many more recodings to come. CD Connection must love me.
  6. This is an interesting topic. Just before finding this thread I was reading an article on Decware's site http://www.decware.com/new%20site/mainmenu.htm. My Cornwall's are out from the long wall about 2-1/2 feet and toed in with spikes on a concrete slab. The room is probably marginal at best with a high ceiling and three large opening to other rooms, two of them on the back wall. The sound I get is amazing. The imaging probably could be improved. I wonder how proficient Klipsch horns are in the imaging department compared to other type of speaker systems? Can anyone speak to this? I can not imagine the sound itself getting much better, but imaging and sound stage?
  7. I've been listening to a lot of old recordings lately. Stuff from the late 60's, early 70's mostly. Recordings such as Lynn Anderson, Charlie Rich, Billie Jo Spears, late Elvis and much more. With all their limitations and peaks and bass limitations, I must say they sure are sweet to listen to. Warm, inviting, involving, just plain more enjoyable. Yes, I like a vast array of new artists. There are many new recording of many genres that I thoroughly enjoy as well and certainly the newer recordings are more dynamic, full... polished. So why are these old recordings just so damn good? Brad
  8. Moderator - Even thought these discussions are certainly entertaining. I would ask that you remove them from the forum. BTW, marriage is between a man and a woman. If gays want the inherent benifits of marriage, then give it to them through some other legal document.
  9. Some how I ended up here and thats a good thing. I very likely would have been listening to god know's what kind of speakers and certainly a high powered, expensive, SS amp. Instead I wound up with Cornwall's and a low powered tube amp modified for triode mode only. That would have never happened without reading many of your posts, both new and old. I ended up with a system that produces music with warmth and clarity that surprises me every time it is played. I didn't know it could be this good. Thank you. Brad
  10. Enjoy the music Max! My play list would render many grins if made available for review.

  12. This is truly a post that saddens my heart.... I hope it works out for you and the family. Even with with tough times, they should have stood up and did the right thing and delivered your stuff as promised. Maybe I'm becoming to soft, but the thought of those kids crying as they were being kicked out chokes me up....
  13. Thanks Georg... I book marked that link and will return for my next tube buying session! Brad
  14. Well, I guess that I should stay with a reputable tube dealer.... The rectifier that was glowing brighter (they were Tung Sol) just smoked. I changed there positions and fired up the amp and witnessed my first tube light show. Kind of like the 4th of July in that tube. Back to the JAN Phillip 5U4GB's and they both glow the same and that sweet sound is once again upon me..... Brad
  15. The tube glows much brighter. It is very apparent. I have not tried changing tube positions yet, but with my other tubes there is no noticable difference in the brightness of the glow.
  16. I've been buying some tubes on eBay for some rolling fun in my Cary SLA-70. I purchased two Tung Sol 5U4GB rectifiers. One of the rectifiers has a visibly brighter element than the other. Would this indicate that they are not matched well? Does my SLA-70 require biasing when changing tubes? If so, how would I do that? Thanks up front for all your knowledge. Brad
  17. Happy to hear that you have the amp. His choice of carrier is still suspect. I guess that is shows us that we need to pay attention to all aspects of an internet sale, even the seemingly obvious. Everyone here would use some form of tracked/insured shipment but I guess that minor detail eludes some. ---------------- On 2/14/2004 6:41:24 PM jorjen wrote: Well, I kind of feel like somewhat of an Ahole now. The Scott arrived today(Feb. 14),it was shipped USPS on Feb. 3rd. just like the guy said it was. But, c'mon, 11 days to go from the midwest to California! That is kind of pathetic if you think about it. Anyway, have not opened her up yet to take a peak, but when I do I will report back. ----------------
  18. I have owned and used the AU717. I would personally advise anyone to reach a little higher. The sound could be a little bright.... too bad, the amp looks killer and the build quality is very good. Mine was from '78, just before Sansui started going south. Brad ---------------- On 2/13/2004 9:36:10 PM tubby wrote: How good is sound quality of the Sansui AU 717 driving Lascalas. The only other amp tried was a Nakamichi 410 & 420. Should I be looking for a better amp. ----------------
  19. Jorjen, don't worry how much you hound this guy. You entered a deal with this guy with the rightful expectation of prompt receipt of goods. If he was unable to deliver in a reasonable amount of time, he should have notified you up front. The shipping method that he used was moronic. I would definitely sweat the guy and don't leave positive feedback. Make sure you warn the next guy. I would not buy from him and would appreciate the warning myself. Good luck! 20. Well, I've got the high bid.... if 2400.00 holds out I should have one grovin album in my collection.... Rock on! Don't forget to vote.. z99807 aka Brad
  21. Ken - Gary... Perhaps I should have have been less harsh in my statement about not wanting to listen to poor recordings. I will step back some. If the music is exceptional and the recording is moderate, then yes, I would listen and enjoy it. On the other hand I do have some recordings that are completetly grating that I can not bear to listen to even thought I enjoy the music, recent stuff too. Recordings so poor that you can not fathom want the record company was thinking. I regularly listen to recodings from the 60' or 70's that are less than perfect, but fully enjoyable. Brad
  22. I just recieved an oddity from CD Connection. The CD has printing on both sides. The regular print side has the usual silk screen but the other side, the play side has printing on it also. The printing is a grid with the words "Pitman Print Sample". Obviously this must be some kind of test disc for the printing process. My question is; should I keep the disc as a collector iteml, or return it for an exchange? The CD is Charlie Rich, Behind Closed Doors. Brad
  23. Thanks for the recording suggestion... I'll pick it up later today!
  24. ---------------- ........Do you have a CD that is just so good/unique/awesome, etc. that the quality is almost irrelivent? ---------------- No. If the recording sucks, I can not bear to listen. I have several CD's that I love the music but the recordings/mastering is so pathetic that I won't listen to them. Perhaps they sound adequate on Best Buy audio systems to the average consumer, but not over here. I strive to only buy good recordings through reviews or other means. - Brad
