  1. Reel, I can send you pictures of what UPS does to Chorus II's, or I can show you my Academy and you can just IMAGINE what they do with a speaker that is three times the weight. Please, please, please don't try to get those things shipped to you. Wait for a set to come up within driving distance, and use the money you would have allocated to shipping to help you win the bid. I've seen Chorus II's go as high as $950, but you ought to be able to do $200 better than if you're patient and lucky. Ultimately though, only you can decide what they're worth to you. Ed
  2. That is an odd duck. I'd like to see a picture of the back and know if it has a serial number, or if it's a Frankenspeaker. Maybe Andy will chime in on it.
  3. Tom, It sounds to me like Thors and m00n are on the right track with the memory leak idea. Something is running in the background, and it sounds like it's making periodic requests for memory, then not releasing the memory. It could be anything that has a periodic behavior -- your email client, antivirus software, Quicken updater running in your tray, stock ticker program, etc. Quicktime, RealPlayer, Roxio CD burning software, and others put a metric buttload of stuff in memory that just sits there and waits for something to happen. I'd try to isolate it by stopping as many programs as you comfortably can. Almost anything in the tray can be safely turned off. You might want to unplug from the 'net before you disable your antivirus software -- better safe and all that. Also be sure you've got the latest revisions on the stuff you use. Sometimes people publish software that has no bugs at all, honest, yet in the next rev the memory leaks and odd crashes are gone. Hope this helps. Ed
  4. Alternately, "Wife Approval Factor." I think I'll test it with a dipole array along the back wall of the HT room when we get the house. Chops, thanks again for the info. I'll probably pester you some more when I get closer to the build phase.
  5. That's the furriest vibration dampener I've ever seen.
  6. You should send a PM to jorjen here on the forum. He has (or had until very recently) a set of beautifully restored Corns, and he's in Merced. Search this forum for "Cornwall Restoration" and you'll see what I mean. Ed
  7. Badly. Did anyone mention that you could use Heresies?

Just curious, however, why it was that all the songs you listened to first sounded tinny and thin? Was it because you didn't have the volume turned up high enough? Or was a setting not engaged in Goodguys' central control panel unit gizmo that resides under that sexy tinted glass? ---------------- LOL . . . no, I had it turned up plenty loud. Please understand that I only spent about fifteen minutes with them and had none of my own material, so this is cursory at best. My impression, though, is that the Journey stuff that was there was just a poor recording. Sandy kept putting her hand around her eyes, like the blinders on the Budweiser Clydesdales -- that was her illustration of the size of the soundstage. When I switched over to the Energy speakers that were next to the References, things didn't sound so harsh. I really think the RF-7/Denon combination was just very revealing, and had no tolerance for any sloppiness on the part of the recording. The Talking Heads song sounded great. I'll confirm that next time we go up. I'll take some of my own stuff so I'll have a good point of, um, reference.
  9. Well of course it's unfair. What's really surprising to me, though, is the extent to which the Heresies hold their own. Sure the RF-7 bass is better, but IMO the Heresies have better mids. There are things to like about both of them. Maybe it's apples vs. oranges, but I like apples AND oranges. Which one is better? That's for you to decide, isn't it? Edit: Oh yeah, the original poster never specified 7s -- he just said Reference. So sure, the comparison you specified might be more "fair." You'd still be comparing two different things, though, and liking one less won't make it worse in any objective sense.
  10. Wow, it's really funny you should post this today, since I'm a Heresy guy who heard RF-7's for the first time a couple nights ago. My wife and I had been furniture shopping and decided to go into Good Guys. It was there. So I saw the RF-7s, and said "We've got to hear those." We had the room to ourselves, so I switched everything over to the RF-7s with the Denon gear, and turned off all the subs, centers, and surrounds. Now, they only had two CDs in there A Journey compilation called "Essential" or some such, and a burned CD of God-knows-what. So I put in the Journey. Underwhelming. Thin. Where's the bass? Where is the midrange impact? The imaging was nice, with Steve right on center, but it sounded like it was coming through a straw. The highs are scratchy. Is the left tweeter blown? Hmm. "Open Arms" sounds better. Better production? Still not a great sound, though. These things are supposed to be just kicking the crap out of my Heresies (I imagine), and that just ain't happening. So, let's get that made disk. Switch through a few songs. Bon Jovi, Loverboy, Foreigner, and a host of 80's hair metal bands. Things are not looking good. Fast forward a few more. Ah! Talking Heads "Up All Night." There's a song I know and like, and I know it is well-recorded. Turn it up. THAT'S WHAT THEY SOUND LIKE! Oh, man. That bass guitar and kick drum are soooooo sexy. Cymbals crash and shimmer. The snare attacks. I want to get The Blue Man Group's "Complex" from the car, but I've exhausted the WAF for this listening session. She wants to see big TVs. I can't complain. I ask her what she thinks of the sound. She says, "Well, one thing's for sure, you're not selling those Heresies. They sound better than these." I think I'll keep her. So what are the differences? The RF-7s are, and sound, bigger. Bass is fuller. More body, over all. They have a smoother sound than the Heresies. I'm not conviced either one sounds "better." They're different. My Heresies have a stronger attack than these RF-7s did. Different room, different front end equipment . . . so take that for what it's worth. Having said all that, I say "Go listen if you can." I expected them to just blow my little Heresies away. Instead, those squat little guys acquitted themselves nicely.
  11. LOL -- my cat likes to sit on the sofa and glare at me when I've got Stevie Ray Vaughn cranked up. She could go just outside, but sitting and glaring seems to satisfy her more. Great write-up and pics -- thanks for sharing that! I might just have to give it a whirl when I get into the new house and have a room of my own to play with. Unlike you, I do have the WAF to account for.
  12. Hey, Rather than maybe hijack the other thread, I thought I'd just open a new one for this question. Those dipoles of yours look like a great bang/buck proposition -- the kind of thing someone with an extra amp, a circular saw, and a weekend can get a lot of joy out of. I wonder if you could share some of the resources you used in researching that thing, and maybe some of your thought process that led you to the drivers and design you have now. Thanks!
  13. Yeah, Quartets would be a good option. There are a couple sets on eBay, or at least there were yesterday. Don't try to ship these guys -- buy them where you can pick them up yourself.
  14. Hi Paul, Just what kind of budget are you working with? Ed
  15. I'm hoping Amy will be more the "avenging angel" type. She ought to be on the RECEIVING end of the pleas for mercy.
  16. People were raving about the Toshiba SD3950 or 3960 not long ago. Should be $50 or $60.
  17. Some of each. m00n, i hear ya. My wife and I get more mileage out of that DVD than just about any other we have,
  18. Paul, With all due respect, the horse is dead and has been for some time now.

Do you happen to have them? Since Damon is bidding on this set I'm going to leave it alone, but it would be handy to know about them for future reference. Thanks!
  20. LOL -- this one is sure making the rounds. They're not poisonous, and they range in size from about one to about three inches across . . . wood spider to tarantula size. They do have a nasty bite, though!
  21. Gullah, Congrats! That sure worked out well for you. HornEd, you have a PM. Ed
  22. "Small claims" are two words that can work, too. When the packager was told by my seller that the matter was heased to small claims, he ponied up the insured amount rather than "hassle with it all summer." Hey, whatever works. At least I got something back after the Apes of Wrath . . . er, UPS . . . ruined my stuff. Good luck to you, marksdad.
  23. Interesting way of looking at it -- I hadn't framed it up like that. That's definitely something to think on.
