  1. Read HDMI cable articles/app notes on Blue Jeans Cables site http://www.bluejeanscable.com/articles/index.htm Might provide some insight into cable claims versus performance.
  2. If this is a Pro Media 2.1 that does not sound right. Mine has a great sound with a variety of source material. I set the bass at straight up on the dial, the satellites at around 30% of full volume and it sounds really great. Louder sounds great too, but not uncontrollable. If you connections are correct, suggest returning it for a replacement if you can do that.
  3. Looks like it came thru as a hot link to the web page, at least for me using IE 8.
  4. Friend at work sent me this. Can't figure out how to make it a hot link, copy paste into brower URL field. There is sound, but really only for the initial "launch". http://sciencedemonstrations.fas.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k16940&pageid=icb.page80863&pageContentId=icb.pagecontent341734&state=maximize&view=view.do&viewParam_name=indepth.html#a_icb_pagecontent341734<http://sciencedemonstrations.fas.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k16940&pageid=icb.page80863&pageContentId=icb.pagecontent341734&state=maximize&view=view.do&viewParam_name=indepth.html> Enjoy!
  5. I used Michael's method after asking for suggestions several years ago for a pair of 5800's and the results have been outstanding. Did the caulk thing along all drywall/stud interfaces. Also stuffed insulation down as far as I could into the stud cavity below the speakers. Existing wall, no nail pops or vibrations to date.
  6. I have a 9200XD that needs some minor refreshing (springs, rubber parts) but don't recall if it was auto-reverse.
  7. When you say "fill the screen" do you mean vertically with black bars on the side or horizontally with no black bars, (zoomed). Previously, I'm fairly certain we had no bars on the side and sure did not notice any along the top. So, tonight, I found a button on the TV remote "format", which provides several "zoom" settings. Interestingly, the Zoom feature in the Menus is greyed out and not accessible. Using ths remote button, we now can set standard def channels to a moderately acceptable size, which fills the screen horizontally and vertically. For the HD channels, this format button does not seem to quite get us to what we had before, but it is close. Conclusion: either Charter changed their signal or someone in the family "bumped" the format button on the remote. We've never used that button before, so possible it was accidentally activated. Now if I could just get my PS3 to reliably play standard def DVDs in Dolby 5.1 and someday figure out if it really will play SACD's in 5.1 surround........ Ahhhhhhh, technology.
  8. Noticed recently that the standard def channels on Charter no longer fill the screen of my Panasonic plasma TV. Looking at various web postings it appears this is related to how the upstream content providers are sending their signal to Charter. Anyone else experiencing this? Other than resizing each standard def channel each time I change channels, anyone have a silver bullet solution? We have digital TV service, expanded basic analog and a high def cable box with a variety of high def stations. These also sometimes display in the wrong aspect ration, usually corrects by switching to another station but with no discernible pattern.
  9. I'm running Windows 7 on an HP desktop, new machine (couple months) and Explorer 8. With the new site, I frequently have to use a back door approach to open the forums. The Sitemap sometimes will get me there. Community will frequently hang and not get me there. My plan B lately has been to Google something that will have a hit for the forum and open that link. once I am in a forum thread I can navigate from there. Tonight, I was on the Klipsch home page and clicked on the Pilgrimage/Music Festival photo, that took me to a writeup on the Pilgrimmage and the festival, clicked on link to "Sign Up" for the forum and that got me in. Either my browser is hosed or the new site is hosed. Not like it used to be. And slower when it does work.
  10. Hey Wayne! Sounds like a sweet setup. We got a 50 inch Panasonic plasma January 2010, it's great when the wife is not watching soap operas or the Hallmark channel, or John and Kate plus 8, or.......well, you get the idea. The flat screens are great for movies, you'll need a Blu Ray player now if you don't already have one....then a new receiver with all the high def sound features........there is no end to this!! Enjoy -
  11. Furman Elite 15 PFi Surge suppression, no UPS Contactor opens for events destined to damage my equipment I still unplug it during heavy thunderstorms with lots of lightning.
  12. Another thumbs up for Spin Clean. Just be sure to dump your fluid, rinse everything well (I use distilled water) and air dry all the parts. I left used solution in the tank for a week once, not very pretty.
  13. Blue Jeans cables http://www.bluejeanscable.com/ Finished, bulk wire, connectors/bananas, HDMI, fiber optic
  14. Thanks, guys, appreciate the responses. Crazy busy at work, still have not addressed this alignment issue. Reading the instructions provided this looks like an alignment with the cartridge removed from the tonearm/shell. Unlikely that I have the referenced gauge, bought the table used around 1972, somewhere I have a box with the stacking spindle and 45 rpm adapter, don't recall seeing a gauge. I'll also have to dig out the original owners manual (I do have that) and see what the VTA reference is about back by the tonearm gimbal area. If that is another adjustment then more fun ahead......
  15. Couple years ago I had my 70's vintage Dual 1229 lubed and gone over by a local shop. New eliptical stylus for Stanton cartridge from same timeframe. Up till now I've been catching some thrift store vinyl and cleaning with Spin Clean washer, seems to work fairly well. I keep my stylus clean with a cleaning brush and fluid when needed. Recently saw a sale for some remastered vinyl and bought a couple albums. Been toying with this idea for awhile. Question is for this turntable and cartridge combination, the only adjustments I know of are tracking force and anti-skate. The shop that cleaned/lubed the table set them both and I have not messed with them. For Goodwill vinyl I never much cared to finess these settings. For my new purchases I'm somewhat more concerned. The new albums are 180 gram vinyl if that matters. Any suggestions on sources of info on these settings or should I just let it ride? Currently both set to 1.5. Also, while looking at those settings, I see Tracking Angle is also shown, now I am concerned. Thoughts, advice, lessons learned?
  16. Oppo has a good reputation and a growing presence for disc players. They have a Blu Ray model at around $500 or less and an upgraded unit at closer to $900. At that point, the name brands such as Denon and Marantz begin to have serious disc player offerings also. I'm talking CD, DVD, SACD, DVD-A and probably variour picture and compressed audio file formats. Been awhile since I've checked anythign but Oppo so take these price ranges with a grain of salt. I love the SACD and DVD-A formats and am fortunate to have a player which will do both. From Pink Floyd DSOTM in 5.1, to Living Stereo classical discs with 3.0 to Blood Sweat and Tears in 2.0, the higher def sound discs can be really great. I've had more great experiences than marginal experiences with these formats. I've stuck with discrete components so far, so cannot say much about the computer based appproach, however lots of good info on that subject in this forum.
  17. Elton John GYBR, DVD-Audio disc, Funeral for a Friend and All the Young Girls Love Alice Soundtrack CD Titanic, first track
  18. Whew! Simply amazing video, well worth the hour to watch and listen. Amazon has a bunch of their CDs, very tempting......
  19. Stumbled across this on NPR website while contemplating listening to the entire Keith Richards interview. Keith can wait. http://www.npr.org/blogs/altlatino/2010/11/10/131211874/two-mexican-musicians-walk-into-an-irish-pub-that-s-not-the-opening-to-a-corny-joke-it-s-the-way-one-of-the-greatest-guitar-group-of-our-times-came-to-be-rodrigo-y-gabriela-started-out-in-mexico-city-playing-in-a-thra Killer guitar work and sound from two person group, I've not heard of them before but aparently they are well known, some limited background on the page at the link. Entire "concert" available at above link for limited time per the NPR website. Runs close to an hour, I'm up to 20 minutes and will probably enjoy the entire thing. Here's the text on the page with the video: Two Mexican musicians walk into an Irish bar... That's not the opening to a corny joke: It's the way one of the greatest guitar groups of our time came to be. Rodrigo y Gabriela started out in Mexico City, playing in a metal band called Tierra Ácida. Frustrated with the Mexican music scene, they moved to Ireland, where they played pubs and street performances. It wasn't long until their talent caught the eye of Irish guitarist Damien Rice, who invited them to join the Irish music festival Oxegen. The rest is history. Since then, they've toured the world and released several successful albums, which include breathtaking covers of Metallica's "Orion" and Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven." The duo's latest album is called 11:11, and on it they pay tribute to 11 musicians who have inspired them. On 11/11/10, they played a concert at a small pub in Dublin. NPR Music's Alt.Latino webcast the concert live on our blog. Watch a replay of the entire set for a limited time. As a one time very mediocre guitarist, I have to say that these two can really cook!
  20. My most recent home repair was a toilet tank rebuild. Bought one of the all-in-one kits, some of it worked as advertised. Then made several trips to hardware stores to buy items to "supplement" the afore-mentioned kit. Along the way I bought a new flush valve, the item that the chain from the handle connects to. Finally some real quality. That part worked. Out of all the pieces purchased, this one alone was - Made in America. So, I have mixed emotions from this experience. Bummed that I had to spend so much time rebuilding a toilet tank. Bummed that when I found somethign made in the US of A it was a rubber flush valve. At least it was stamped as made in USA. Hard to tell if that is even true. Another plumbing adventure some years ago, installed replacement dishwasher, needed new copper tubing. Kept getting a leak when I cut and flared the tubing. Finaly bought a roll Made in USA, no problems. This was 10-15 years ago, not even sure you can buy copper tubing made in this country now. My father in law says stuff from China has a timer built in, and when the time is up, the item dies. Our 11 month old toaster oven worked almost fine until it was 9 months old. Sure enough, at 1 month plus the warrantly, it croaked. First the temperature oven setting died, then it would not even operate on the toast cycle. Our next unit will be a toaster, only, at under $20 to cut our losses - - - 13 months from now.
  21. At the risk of repeating from previous posts....... Roy Orbison Black and White Nights Multiple sound field options on the DVD. Also seems like there is a CD with this, or maybe DVD plus DVD-A, both discs are really fine. Paul McCartney Live in Red Square Interesting commentary and interviews, video can be a bit choppy at times, sound is good. Paul McCartney LIve in New York Concert at the new Citi Park. More choppy video but music makes up for it. Moody Blues Live at Royal Albert Hall I've seen this so many times during public television fund drives, guess I should buy a copy sometime. Eagles LIve in Melbourne Not as "clean" as Hotel California, but more of a live concert feel, especially Joe Walsh.
  22. Furman Elite 15 PFi http://www.furmansound.com/product.php?div=02&id=ELITE-15PFi Shop hard for a reasonable price, I've been very satisfied with this unit.
  23. Try a DVD and select a soundfield which should have a reasonable low frequency effects (LFE) track, something with 5.1 Dolby or DTS should do the trick. You may have to redo the speaker levels adjustments again for this sound source, so make sure the sub is set to something above 0. Keep the sub volume knob on the actual sub set close to zero when trying these various settings, slowly increase volume on the sub when sound source is playing. From your posts it sounds like you are using the LFE output from your Pioneer, but at one point did you mention connecting to an LFE input on your Pioneer? Does your Pioneer have two LFE outputs, or one?
  24. Here is a link to the Denon website 100th anniversary page. There is another page that shows the anniversary products but this link is a historical timeline of Denon products tied to events at the time of various product introductions. Interesting to cycle thru and read the various biopics. http://denon100.com/#/en/timeline
