  1. Hey tpg That looks like a very well built amp!!! I really like the layout. I see its also dual mono. Just curious but do you happen to know what roughly are these selling for on ebay and such? mike[]
  2. Hi tpg Your probably feeling better today bust just incase I thought I would mention a couple of things that you already know. First: Most things are relative and in your case if these are the worst things that are happening to you then all you need to do is look around and realize there are problems in life far worse than what you have going on now. We can wake up everyday and decide to be happy or sad and after some of my life's trials I have learned to let alot of stuff slide. I CHOOSE to be Happy and not sit and dwell on things that I have no control over or can't change: In other words its a waste of time(LIFE) to go around upset like we all can do at times! You know if we have things they can and will break and so like above if while riding your bike you have had some troubles with inner tubes then try to figure out if there is anything you could do to prevent it and then let the problem go. Be Gratefull You Can Ride some of us Can't! The Turntable problem you mention actually turned out to be a learning experience and as long as you learned something from the experience it wasn't a waste! One way we humans advance is to make mistakes and LEARN FROM THEM!!! I wouldn't go back and change alot of my mistakes because of what I learned from them but I also wouldn't want to repeat them either once I learned my lesson! You are correct about the AMP. If one channel is Cool, Buzzing and Has a DC Offset of (-3)volts then something is off in that channel due to a failed part or connection in that channel and though I haven't seen the schematic for that amp I would guess from your description that I would check out the first stages and bias circuitry of that channel for starters. Anyway you know the nature of electronics failure can sometimes be the Unit is Working Fine and you turn it off and the Next Time You Turn it On its not. You Listened to it and it was good then you get it home and it has problems; This is just that nature of the beast and has nothing to do with anything else! Anway tpg I would say we all have felt like things are just against us but thats really not the case. Its just stuff and in reality and relative to other things in life its not that big a deal!!! mike[]
  3. Sounds like your going through a stage of burnout with this hobby. I've enjoyed this hobby for 35 years and as life goes on there have been times when I just have to slow down and turn my attention else where. You know in my view a happy life is all about balance and to much of anything usually isn't the best thing for anyone. One aspect of this hobby that I have always done is to keep trying to improve my sound and sometimes that can get so involved that I've caught myself not really listening or enjoying my system. So I've learned to walk away for awhile and also to just turn my system on and stop my mind from thinking about improvements and instead just Listen to the Music. Obviously after 35 years at this hobby I realize that it is a part of my life that I will always enjoy but there are only so many hours in a day so I try to pay attention and spend time with family and good friends to find that happy balance. Take a break Michael and make an effort to enjoy other things for awhile and then I believe you will find your interest in this hobby coming back and the fun also. mike[]
  4. QuiteSolution said: Upfront disclosure, I represent Quiet Solution, so I know the products well First welcome QuiteSolution. There are several people on this forum who sell products so I welcome you as I would them. You shared good information with us and straightened out some apparently misinformation which we all should want to know. I for one am always interested in hearing from anyone who wants to share constructive information and has good experience with what they are talking about. Thanks mike[]
  5. It could be the disc itself has a flaw. All CD players have error correction circuitry built in and some are better than others at correcting for these flaws. I have held some CDs like you describe toward some light and have been able to see a flaw(like a little pin hole) in the CD metal structure itself. mike[]
  6. It would be worth your time to try the Long Wall just to know for yourself after all each situation is unique. I had mine in 3 different rooms (one was 21.5 by 13.5) and the Long wall always came out as Best in each case. mike[]
  7. Arrival Times to the Mic where given as: Tweeter 10.3ms Squawker 12ms Woofer 17.7ms mike
  8. DrWho I posted the 1986 Audio Magazine Review by Richard Heyser which gives the Time Delay between drivers. mike[]
  9. FWIW: I first began reading Heyser's works over 20 years ago and I would like to join dragonfyr in encouraging those who are interested in the study of audio and psychoacoustics to read the works of those he has mentioned and ESPECIALLY the works of RICHARD HEYSER who I would also considered one of the BEST MINDS to have ever worked in these fields of study. It is very clear once you begin reading Richard Heyser's works that he was decades ahead of many! Like dragonfyr said Heyser could write/communicate on many levels and I believe it should be MUST READING for anyone really interested in these subjects!!!! Also as dragonfyr has said the ETF program offers alot to those interested in understanding how our systems/rooms are interacting with each other and ourselves. Please Check It Out: http://www.etfacoustic.com/ mike[]
  10. Side View of Belle Klipsch. I'm thinking if it was me I would probably remove the whole Top Section including possibly 1" riser. mike[]
  11. Here are a few pictures to help you see how the Belle Klipsch's Top is constructed. Note: pencil at Two Nuts that will allow you to remove part of the Top Section which would be Sides,Motor Board and actual Top. Once you remove these then I believe you will find more screws to remove the Bottom Plate and 1" Riser also if you wanted. Anyway I hope this helps you to see if you would want to use a Belle Klipsch for your purpose. mike[]
  12. Yes, I'm talking about regular Belle Klipsch. Its not that they are ment to come apart say like the tops on Khorns but I believe it would be pretty simple to seperate the top section from the bottom section where the Approx. 1" riser is between the Top and Bottom section is. I've got to run now but maybe I can take some pictures of the Top section for you later so you can see what would be involved. mike[]
  13. brian said: Same with Belle's, they don't come apart, do they? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi brian I should have been clearer. A person could seperate a Belle Klipsch's Top section from the Woofer section because it is screwed onto the Woofer section but you would probably want to do some cosmetic work to the top section to make it look best (Like a New bottom plate to make it look like a completed box once you remove it from the woofer section). The Seperated Top Section could possibly be mounted above the viewing screen as some have done. The great thing is you could easily put the Belle Klipsch back to stock form anytime you wanted. At one time I remember seeing a Belle Klipsch taken apart to mount a different horn (Maybe it was ALK who had shown this?) but I haven't been able to find it on the forum search option but it would give you an idea of what would need to be done. Anyway I thought it might be a good option for your situation. mike[]
  14. That would be good option for some people since the Top Section could be removed the same as a split La Scala. It's approx. 6" wider and 5" less deep versus the La Scala. mike Edit: The Belle's woofer section is 24.75" tall including a 2" riser which could possibly be removed.
  15. From the diagram I have of the AL-3 all you need to change is the two 68mfd capacitors in parallel with the woofer to either TWO 50mfd or a single 100mfd capacitor. mike[]
  16. Hi dragonfyr Did you receive my PM on the Heyser Book and ETF? mike[]
  17. I had a Klipsch Chorus that sounded similar to what you described and it was one wire turn of the voice coil toward the back of the voice coil that had come loose. I replaced the woofer at that time. Definitely search for anything loose in the speaker and if nothing else try swapping the woofers of the left and right speakers and see if the problem swaps. mike[]
  18. Amy Please give our appreciation for the HARD WORK that Everyone at Klipsch has done to see that the HERITAGE LINE Continues!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've always loved the looks of both the La Scala and Belle Klipsch and this combination looks Beautiful to me!!!! Thanks mike[]
  19. Funny you mention it but I'm like you! One remote for the CD Player and One for the Cary SLP98L and the Creek Remote for my center channel. I wouldn't do without them!!! The reason I actually feel the remote is necessary(not just a luxury) is I find so many tracks on a recording seem to have a level of their own that just sounds correct!!! mike
  20. Interesting about the capacitor bypass! Erik from what I can tell the Volume Control Assembly consist of a motor mounted to a gear/clutch assembly then to the volume controls themselves. All the circuirty is basically for the infrared remote operation and mute circuitry. If I remember correctly the remote circuitry goes into a sleep mode till it receives a signal from the Hand Unit to prevent any interferance from the remote circuits with the Audio Signal passing through the unit. I don't believe there is any processing of the signal at all. Also the DC is provided by a wall wart supply to minimize any chance of120V 60Hz AC interferance. Definitly not the highest quality or most expensive Volume Control used in this unit BUT I have put it in place of some $1000 to $2000 dollar pre-amps in my and some friends systems and it always held its own or actually sounded better!! mike[]
  21. Erik asked: Have you opened that Creek up? I've always been curious about what is in them, and what the circuit actually consists of. Well to be honest I never bothered to open it up. I knew it handled the sound very good so I left it alone. Anyway since you asked I thought why not see how its made so here are a couple of pictures. The control isn't very impressive but only a few active pre-amps have sounded better in my system. mike[] Edit: Notice the board says OBH12 which is a unit that has multiple inputs so evidently they use the same board in the OBH10 and just leave out some componets.
  22. Good Question Julie What happens to a system using Very Efficient Speakers like the KHorn/LaScala/ Belle Klipsch is because they are 104db efficient versus 85db to 90 db efficiency of the average speakers on the market. With this 15db to 20db (This is often the amont of Gain that a preamp gives to line level sources(CD Players for example) and is also why we can sometimes get by without a pre-amp with our KHorns Systems) increase in efficiency not as much gain is needed to reach normal listening levels. So what happens is the Volume Control ends up only being usable toward its lowest settings where they often have the largest increases from one notch setting to the next setting which makes it hard to set the Volume Control just where we want to listen at. Also if the electronics hum/noise floor is high it will be very noticible on a very efficient speaker like a KHorn. I believe if we need to use an attenuator the best place to use an attenuator for most systems would probably be on the input of the Amplifier because when placed there it will also attenuate any inherent noise that the pre-amp has and thus should give us the least hum/noise in our system. Put Simply High Efficiency Speakers aren't the normal speakers people use and so most systems are put together with the thought of these 85db to 90db speakers. This is also why alot of Loudness Controls systems don't work good with very efficient speakers because they aren't variable based on our speaker's efficiency. mike[]
  23. I'm not sure what all CD versions are avaible at the present time. I bought mine from AUDIO AMATEUR PRESS Order no: CDRDH many years ago. In The Version I have you can jump to a chapter directly from the table of contents and then link directly to each topic. You then can scroll through the appropriate pages of the Topic. I hope this description helps. mike[]
