  1. Welcome to the weekly spot for offering suggestions to your fellow members on music you think is worth sharing. The first week started well with several interesting and well recoded suggestions by a number of folks. Several of them are going on my "to buy" list. The format is simple: name of group/individual; type fo recording (cd/lp etc.), type of music (jazz, rock as best you can) and any comments you may wish to offer. OK we've spent all this money on gear so let's feed these beasts with some serious tunes. I'll start with: Cassandra Wilson "New Moon Daughter", cd, jazz. Wonderful mood music from a stellar voice.
  2. Max not only are you living in one of the nicest countries on the planet you get to hear all this very serious gear. Man am I jealous.
  3. That's the way I do it my living room and I haven't had any problems, However, strongly suggest you use banana plugs. What you want is one pair of the speaker wirer to be aatached to a side-loaded banana clip that then plugs directly into the back of your speaker. For the next set use back-loaded banana clips which then plug directly into the back of the first set of clips. You'll get a better connection and it makes swapping out equipment very easy. They are$4-$5 a pair at www. partsexpress.com

    Fifth Element

Great movie with a major babe! Love it. Superbly done sci-fi.
  5. See Larry, that wasn't so bad was it. Bethesda's not very far away at all. Yeah, let's hook up, maybe even with Gary. Maybe even play a little Ludwig B. (kudos to Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange"-wished they'd remaster that soundtrack) I've got a little Panasonic SS amp I'd like to bring by that might actually suprise you.
  6. Daddy, the "flaming" process basically realigns the atoms, structure, whatever so the cut edges turn clear again, thus you have a "seemless" appearance. For the do-it-yourselfer you use a hand held propane torch with the flame about 4 inches from the joint/edge and pass it rapidly (about 3/4 inches a second) down the seam. Chances are on the first pass not everything will clear up. You don't want to make repeated passes at once because it will overheat the acrylic, melt it and you'll also end up with air bubbles. Let it cool down after each pass until you get it where you want. Plastics shops have oxygen/propoane or some other type of gas and, of course, tons more practice at gettting it right. Dean, I'd be interested in building a few for you but I'd probably need a lot more practice before gracing your excellent work with with my own efforts. Why don't you send me the dimensions for your own personal crossovers, and I'll build you a set gratis for you to look over. Also let me know if you want them vented and how many holes you'd think would be appropriate (can only do holes at this time-don't have a router).
  7. You mean you don't know how to modify Khorny's to do this? Apparantly you're not spending enough time on this Forum and missed the "Turn Your Khorny's into a Router" thread. What's your objection to wireless? Don't you already have enough speaker wires and such running around the house? I'm single so I don't really need a home network, but going wireless will get you the latest protocols and if you have one, you can use your laptop anywhere in the house. Just be sure to enable the security blocs or your neighbors will be using up your bandwith. As far as the server aspect, why not just use your new PC. If your going to be massaging and sending massive amounts of data you can pop in a second harddrive, and use a Raid configuration to flog the data. Also a gig of ddr ram is a good idea. (used matched harddrives and matched pairs of ram). All new decent pc's have this capability so your pc should be able to handle this.
  8. Thanks Bill, but you should have seen how awefull my first effort was (check under my thread in Updates and Mods). Wrench, I basically took the design from other amp/receivers cases I have and none of them are vented from the front, although some are vented from the sides. As you can see by the attached the rear has been left open and that should draw in plenty of air. I drilled holes instead of vents because I didn't have a router but did have a drill press. I'm having the seams and holes "flamed" professionaly. The guy at the plastics shop told me if I used a hand held propane torch I could melt too much of the surface and because the flame doesn't burn as pure the finished product could end up with little flecks of soot in it.
  9. Acrlyic case cover for my Scott 299. Came out pretty good. Still have to "flame" it so the seams won't show, but I'm fairly pleased. Also elevated the top a couple of inches over normal so the heat of the tubes won't melt it. Looks better then the original steel case and will provide protection for dropped objects, dust etc. Once it's completly finished I'll be posting some more pics and tips and tricks in the Updates and Modification's area so anybody wanting to do this will have some practical advice. Also want to thank the folks over in that section (especially Michael) for their help so I could learn how to do this right.
  10. Larry, don't give up yet! Excellent suggestion for the new positioning, if they don't want it in Home Audio moving it up where you suggest is a great idea. As to this particular thread, I say "build it and they will come". Collectively we must have, oh say, 8 or 9 billion differemt tunes in our Member's combined record collections. I'm hoping after it runs a few weeks, more people will stop by. I'm also hoping that folks like yourself will maybe post a little note in the Forum area their best known in saying "hey drop down here and leave a suggestion or two". Finally, I think the fine folks at Klipsch could have fun with this too. I'm sure they must have an inhouse electronic billboard and I'm also sure a lot of the folks at Klipsh listen to a variety of music. They could start a similiar thread on their inhouse board and post the suggestions from time to time. Not as "Klipsch Official Music Recommendations" but something like "Music Suggestions from the People Who Build Speakers" or even "by the Speakers, for the Speakers and of the Speakers". Might be fun for them.
  11. Michael, sorry I'm just responding. I finally found a local plastics store, dropped by and came home with glue, materials, handbook etc. I'm going to do the cutouts and he will run the flames over them for free to clear up the plastic. Apparantly the little held held torches leave bits of soot in the plastic. Will post pics when done. Thanks for all your help.
  12. Good ones, especially Bladerunner, the Commitments and Pulp Ficton. Made me think of another one: The Big Chill Keep'em coming!
  13. Bump. A litle humor and some cautionary holiday words. From: "Three Fingered" Thebes
  14. I've got a solid state Sansui, very nice but a smidge harsh with Klipsch. Recommend you visit www.audiokarma.org and type Sansui 1000a in search field. I just did that and a bunch of hits came up. There's a group of Sansui fanatics that hang out there. Also the first thread that popped up asked the same question as you did and the response was generally favorable. Hope this helps and good luck.
  15. Slightly different from Wild bill's thread and something both the music and movie lovers down here can enjoy. You know, hated the movie, loved the music; loved the movie; loved the music so you had to buy the cd. I'll start the ball rolling with four: Animal House Frida Kansas City Masked and Anonymous (Bob Dylan's 2003 flic with four songs performed by him and a dozen other of his songs sung by others)
  16. Good advice from Ironwoods. Also check out Speaker DIY world (http://tubesall.hihome.com/speakers./htm) which has lots of links to other DIY audio sites. Also, audio DIYcentral and DIY audio com.
  17. Congrats, I'm jealous. Ray you are a riot! Somebody take away his dictionary before we all get into trouble.
  18. dtel, you're definitly just bad to the bone. Love the Destroyers. Great rock with a driving blues sense. I commend you purchase.
  19. "Beer and explosives, what could possibly go wrong."
  20. "Look", my friend says to me, "I need somebody with to help me with my wedding, play two songs with the ceremony, hopefully at the right time in the proceedings". "Be happy to", I reply, "What are you playing them on and how big is the room".(heh, heh, heh) "Well, I've got a boom box. That should do." "I know you're not having a band, will there be any dancing afterwards?" "Not sure, it depends on if they need the room for the evening dinner trade at the 'Dust." (Stardust Restaurant). "Ok, it's a big day, I can bring along my Promedia's hooked to a walkman and that will sound better. Maybe I should grab a couple of mains, a reciever and a changer." So it's this last Saturday, I load up a pair of KG 3'5's, a baby Marantz and a player. Play a little Eva Cassidy as background while the people filter in, do the two songs, a little more background while people eat, and that's pretty much it. The restaurant needs the space so I toss the gear into a party room that isn't being used and head up front to the bar. Well, a little while later, I'm chatting with a few friends from the wedding, and talking about my recent case of upgraditis, and the cynic in the crowd states that you don't need to spend more then a 100 bucks total to get all the speaker you will ever need. I suggest we slip back into the party room and listen to some tunes. Pretty soon there's a round dozen of us with more trickling in an out, grooving out to some music. Wouldn't you know it, we're all singing along to Colin Hay's acoustic version of Overkill (Men at Work) and (who else) the cynic has to grab the volumne control and spin it up a couple of notches. He obviously needs more KK's! That, of course, brings in the manager, and thus ends that little party. Since we're supposed to ask questions here, not just tell stories, I guess my question is has anybody ever been to a party where somebody HAS NOT cranked up the sound? Is it a universal imperative? Also, congrats to Greg and Martha on their nuptials.
  21. Colin, forgot to add I have been to your site and have bookmarked it and plan to visit often. Don't know why it took me so long to get there, but I'm glad I did.
  22. I've got Sterophiles Test CD #3. Great for setting up sytems and the music cuts are fantastic. I now own 3 cd's from three different artists as a result of listening to this cd.
  23. Maybe this will help liven up the place. Once a week I'll start a thread and members can post some of their favorites in various categories (jazz, classical, rock etc.) and by weeks end foks will have some thoughts over what music to buy with thier paychecks. Guidelines are simple: Name of group/individual, name of disk, type of disk (cd,lp etc.), type of music (as best you can) and a quality recording. The last ones not much of an obligation because almost everything ever recommendation on this site is very well recorded. I'll start the ball rolling with: Willie and Lobo's "Wild Heart". (CD) This group falls either under World or New Wave depending on the record store you frequent. A sort of flamenco/jazz. I keep flogging them on the forum to massive lack of interest, but boy do they match up well with Klipsch! Ok, now we need some classical gas, a little smokin blues, some grooving funk, some trippy rock, ah you get the idea.
  24. The Java problem is a known bug and the work-around is pretty simple which is to donwload and install the latest Java reader. Go to Mozilla's home, fiddle around and you'll find details and a link to the download. Damon, I hear what you say, the full version can be a smidge slower on some computers, but it crashes less then IE, and if you ever take Firefox (mailess browser) for a spin you'll probably end up turning in your notice.
  25. Welcome, I'm a big fan of the KG 3.5's, very clean and detailed and will fit your budget. Nice bass also. I have a Marantz 2015, which is basically a baby Marantz. I cycle it into my 3.5 system about once a month and it's a good match. If you can stretch your budget a little higher you should consider either the KG 5.2 or KG 5.5. I'll get an argument from some but if you're going used the KG series is excellent bang for the buck. The main concern with Klipsch is not wattage, they can be powered to ear bleeding levels with a candle. To some ears, though, they can sound "bright" or harsh in the upper levels, so the "warmer" sounding the amp the better they match with Klipsch. After you get the speakers there's plenty of suggestions already here from Members that will lead you to other amp/receiver choices should the Marantz not meet your own personal listening tastes.
