  1. Wow, some really neat stuff listed on here. Some of which bring back some fond memories. I wish I could look up the salesman at our local high-end stereo store to say how sorry I was for hanging out there for hours and hours without spending a dime. I lucked out a great deal. My father worked for Ampex so, needless to say, I had the state of the art reel to reel coupled with commercial studio grade tube amps and preamps. I also got all of my fathers Mac stuff as hand-me-downs every time he upgraded. He switched from Klipsch to the AR-1 when it was all the rage. He told me that was the reason he went to Dyna amps, that was the only Amp at the time that would drive an AR-1. Thank goodness he went back to Klipsch and he liked to upgrade almost every year. I still have a lot of the Ampex equipment, all tube, all analog. Some stil workds great, some I am still searching for parts. The Mac stuff is all stll perfect. Travis

You might be able to sand it to lessen the “notice-ability” of the scratch. Then any good polyurethane or lacquer will work. Or you could re-veneer them in whatever wood finish you like. I am by no means an expert on this topic but it’s my 2cents anyhow. ---------------- What stripper (o.k. spare me the jokes, I am serious) would you reccomend to remove the original lacquer? Any particular brand/product that you have had good sucess with. I always cringe when I have a project that I know will require stripping off the original finish. Thanks, Travis
  3. From the SME site: In 1959 Alastair Robertson-Aikman, the Company's founder and Managing Director, required a pick-up arm for his own use and an experimental model was built. It received such an enthusiastic reception from friends in the sound industry that it was decided to produce it commercially and the first SME precision pick-up arm appeared in September 1959. Production was 25 units per week composed entirely of individually machined components. At this time a new factory situated in Mill Road, Steyning was opened and the Company's name was changed to SME Limited, a less committal title to suit its new activities. SME now has over 40 years experience in high quality precision engineering and the Company's plant at Steyning is now probably the largest and best equipped devoted to the manufacture of precision pick-up arms and turntables.
  4. From the Linn website. "Launched over 30 years ago, Linn's first ever product, the SONDEK LP12, defied, challenged and eventually revolutionised accepted hi-fi wisdom. At that time, loudspeakers were considered the most important component within a hi-fi system. Linn contended that the source component, in this case the turntable, ultimately determined the performance of the hi-fi system, a fact which was easily proven by a simple A-B demonstration. Linn's 'source-first' approach is now a widely adopted industry standard." I beleive Linn helped jump strat the high-end turntable/tonearm explosion.
  5. I recall $10,000 turntables in the early 70's. I am sure Linn had very expensive alternatives before that. The British, Germans and Swiss seem to have been making very high end stuff since the late 60's. Travis

  7. ---------------- On 12/11/2004 10:16:04 AM Al Klappenberger wrote: Dean, They fit #6 screws. Al K. ---------------- Al and Dean, What options do you provide on your crossover upgrades in terms of the screw-terminal barrier block for speaker connections. In other words, is it possible to pay extra for bannana plug terminals on the crossover or a screw-terminal block which will allow much larger spades? Thanks, Travis

  9. I am looking to purchase a universal remote that has RF capabilities with IR flashers. I am pretty impressed with the Home Theatere Master MX-600, however, I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions about some alternatives. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Travis
  10. I. like everyone else on this forum, feel very bad about your plight. However, in my experience you are much better off buying only on Audiogon or this forum. Ebay tends, IMHO, to be a place where people are ready to make a score and have no appreciation for equipment. Whereas, people on this forum or Audiogon are those who appreciate equipment for its value, both monetary as well as the enjoyment of the next owner thus being much better sellers. I don't think I would buy any high-end item on Ebay unless a forum member could check it out localy. I have sold lp's on this forum and because I know that I would be an outcast if I did anything underhanded I made sure that what I said was very conseravative in terms of grade/condition. Likewise, I have bought some very expensive items from forum members and have been very satisfied. I believe this is because they know you cannot bullsthit anyone here, there is too much knowledge. Bottom line, if you want justice, go to a whorehouse (or this forum), if you want to get ****ed buy on EBay. Travis
  11. Thanks Edwin, Sounds like good advice to me, I think I will try out the 15's and if we need to move up a model my dealer will be happy to exchange them for me. Any recomendations on a small sub unit to go with them? Travis

If it is meant to provide background music that doesn't demand significant bass output or high levels, your needs are really much different from what most of us would recommend. ---------------- That is a good point, for this room we will just be piping in background music when we have people over. I have a dedicated music/home theater room so these will be just to provide sound when we have people over. Travis
  13. Travis Williamson from Austin, Texas. I'm a criminal defense lawyer. I love all of the great input and discussion on these forums. Travis
  14. I need to buy a set of bookshelf speakers for one of my living areas (unfortunately no room for herigage speakers on the floor, these have to be mounted on the wall). I was wondering if anyone had any reccomendations in this regard. I A/B'ed the RB-15's with some Paradigms in the $250 range and the RB-15's, to me, sounded much better. I am not set on any particular line of Klipsh or brand for that matter. Any thoughts or suggestions would be most appreciated. Travis
  15. If Robertel is not interested in one of your lots, or if he already has an one or two contained in your lots let me know and I will take them off your hands. Travis
  16. Thank you Mr. Hurd, great advice. Just what I was looking for. Travis
  17. If anyone is interested in buying these I would be happy to drive down from Austin to San Antonio (40 miles) to look/audition them for you. Travis
  18. Rick, What is oak base shoe moulding? Where would I find such a thing? Travis
  19. Why not try Armor-all or back to black, rejuvenators for auto plastic/rubber? I was considering trying such a product but was hoping someone had done this and could tell me what worked or what didn't. Travis
  20. I have a pair of 1990 LaScalla's and the K401 Horns have what appear to be white spider-web like cracks in them. I know this is just inherent in the materials uses, but I was wondering if anyone has come up with a good way of re-blacking the inside of their mid-range horns so they look nice and pretty. Thanks, Travis
  21. Trey, I have a KSP 400 system and a Nikon 5 megapixel camera, what kind of photos do you need? Action, candid, nude, clothed? All kidding aside, let me know what you are looking for and I will be happy to try and help. Travis
  22. I was wondering if any of my fellow HT Forum members have the Yahmaha SPX 1 projector. It has now been discontinued and the place where I do some business is offering them at a closeout price of $4,000. I would appreciate any feedback on this model, Yamaha projectors in general or if anyoneis really plased with their projector they might have recently purchased in the $4,000 range. Thanks in advance for your comments. Travis
  23. Lynn, Thanks for the original review and the great update. I am going to go ahead and purchase a kit tonight based upon your results. Did you ever find a better soultion to the wipes that came with the kit? Thanks again, Travis

He said he would take $1700 ---------------- If he is asking $1,700 for two (2) pair, i.e., four speakers, that is a very good price depending on the shape of the exterior. Keep in mind that you can get the "home" version in excellent shape for $1,000 which you would be able to test and could get assurances on. There are a couple of great posts you can search for on this forum about what to look for when purchasing LaScalla's depending on the year of manufacture. You should try and get the S/N's ahead of time and post them on here so that you can get some more input on what the original drivers and cross-overs should be. A portable cd might be a little light, but you can for sure hook them up to a car stereo system, right off the amp. I know because I had to test a pair this way myself and you can get them cranked up as high as you need for a good test. Good luck, Travis
  25. I got my list of albums compleated, there are about 270 titles. If anyone is interested at taking a look you can send me a PM or email me at tcwesq@texas.net. Travis
