  1. I like Brian Ferry too, Marty. I recently bought 'Avalon' on SACD. An outstanding album. Also worth buying are ''Boys and Girls' which features the song 'Slave to Love'. 'Taxi' and 'Flesh and Blood' are two other good albums to buy. Another one is 'Bete Noir' which has a stunning version of Elvis Presley's 'Girl of my Best Friend'. If you want to give your speakers a low frequency work-out, play 'Girl of my Best Friend' LOUD! Pretty much anything you buy of Ferry's is good value, although I question his 'As Time Goes By' CD from a couple of years ago. Some of the tracks are okay and are recorded in full stereo. The rest are recorded in mono to replicate a bygone era. It's okay I guess. Just a bit gimmicky for me. I haven't heard his latest CD, 'Dylanesque'. P.S. Marty, if you want I can post you a spare 'Avalon' CD to you. Just email your address to me and I'll pop it in the mail. You should get it in a couple of days...
  2. Maybe you might need to reset the lamp hours via the Mitsubishi's menu, just like you do with a projector(?)
  3. LOL! So rplace, are you trying to say you like this disc then...?
  4. Well you pose a difficult question, suggesting speakers that do not particularly appeal to me for various reasons. The Palladium is too expensive, and I haven't heard it, but it's still too expensive. The Dynaudio, magnificent speaker, but too demanding of amplifiers. The Kef 207.2 - you can't be serious! it looks so bad I couldn't live with it no matter how good it sounded! The B&W 800D - not my favoorite B&W speaker, it lacks the drive of my favorite B&W being the 801D - a far better option. You could buy a used 801 for not a lot of money. So to answer your question, kind of, the best of the bunch value for money and sound quality... is the mighty Klipschorn. You have to spend an AWFUL lot of money to do better...
  5. C'mon, Bill. Admit it. While listening you're gazing longingly at her album cover. The more you look, the better she sounds. [] I have to admit, she's VERY easy on the eyes. What's Elvis Costello got that I haven't? Yeah, I know - Diana Krall...
  6. I'd go with either the Epson or Panasonic for a 720p projector. I've had two Panasonics. Neither have failed me. I've heard good stuff about the Epson's too... I know 1080p is all the rage, but the 720p projectors give fantastic results on Bluray. After all, 720p is still high def. There's more to a good projector than blindly following the specifications game.
  7. That's my take as well, Bill. An unusually weak effort. Maybe her record company thought they could tap a part of the market that laps stuff like this up. Disappointing...
  8. More: Revelation: * Old rockers never die. They just get better... * Klipsch horn speakers really do benefit from high quality amplifiers. * Some Jazz stuff sounds pretty good. * Many audiophiles lack a sense of humor. Misconception: * The long lost Parrot has no sense of humor. * That I will find an audio system that I will be happy to keep forever... * Cheap Chinese tube amps will last forever. * Cheap Chinese tube amps sound good.
  9. Revelations: * Multi-channel is more trouble than what it's worth. * CD sound quality really has improved during the last few years. * Diana Krall has great legs. Misconceptions: * Elvis Costello has great legs. * High priced audio cable sounds better. * Audio component of the year awards actually mean something. * Bose.
  10. That's interesting that you love the album. I thought that this album is very different from Krall's usual style. I reckon she's trying to sound like one of those torch sigers from years gone by. This style doesn't suit her...
  11. Stupid me. I just bought it. I've just finshed listening to the entire album. - and what a waste of money. I had a listen in my car on the way home from work and I was thinking, "this doesn't sound so hot". When I got home I threw the power switches on my system and my worst fears were confirmed - this album has VERY average recording quality. The bass is muddy and poorly defined. Krall sounds like she's singing from the bottom of a well. I know she's capable of much, much better as 'Live in Paris' proves. Also the production is dreary and makes the album sound like the stuff you'd hear in an elevator. I want my money back...[:@]
  12. Thanks guys. I don't think any of us mind spending $3000 as long as we get value for money. It's a lesson that we should stick to proper retail outlets and reputable sellers. I did remind my old man that next time he should only buy from a proper retail store - just in case of warranty issues.
  13. As I stated in another thread, I've never been a fan - except for 'Live in Paris'. I have to say though, that despite the probably justified technical criticism of the album shot, I think she looks rather nice...
  14. I can take Krall in very small doses. 'Live in Paris' is easily her best. Great sound quality and the musical arrangements are excellent. On this album, Krall's piano playing is not bad either. Somehow though, Krall has difficulty tapping into her live performance capabilities when in the studio...
  15. LOL! Yeah, I was thinking the same thing...
  16. My father, in his 70's but still working, went to the local shopping mall the other week. Whilst there he was approached by a man allegedly having completed a delivery of hi-fi gear to the local department store. He said the order had been made up incorrectly so he had a spare surround speaker system left over. Yeah, you guessed it, my naive and gullible father accompanied the man out into the carpark to to view the speakers. He was told they were 'high-end' and 'digital ready' and 'all electronic' winning the European speaker of the year award for three years running. He bought them. But not having enough money on him the man accompanied my father to the bank and he withdrew, wait for it......... $3000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and gave it to the man, who claimed the speaker system was worth over $10,000! As an added incentive, the man kindly delivered the speakers to my father's apartment foyer. Being rather busy though, the man said he had more 'deliveries' to do so he couldn't help my father carry the boxes up the three flights of stairs to his apartment (a*sehole). Anyhow, a few days later my brother rang me and said I'd better come and have a look. So when I arrived at my father's apartment. the speakers had been unpacked. They consisted of four little floorstanders, a center channel speaker and two little rear speakers. No subwoofer. Opening the box up because one of the floor standing speakers that didn't work revealed a very cheap low grade mdf cabinet covered by a quite good vinyl finish. There were two 'bass drivers in the cabinet and one tweeter. There was a resister between the tweeter and the bass driver and the bass drivers were wired in series. No Crossover at all. The drivers were cheap pressed steel with rough edges and they had the smallest magnet I have ever seen on a driver. I pushed one of the lugs back onto a terminal and the speaker worked - sort of. To cut a long story short, I hooked the speakers up to my father's receiver. They sounded like crap. His older speaker system was better. My father was over the moon. He had bought a new 42 inch television to go with the speakers - at least that was half decent. My brother and I elected not to say a word to him. We left him happy in his ignorance. To take the matter further woud unduly upset my father - he's already had one triple bypass. I'm usually a physically placid kind of guy. I only k*ll when I have to. But can I say that this is one of those rare moments that I could wring someone's neck. Maybe the driver of that white van... [:@]
  17. Very unimpressd with this movie. I bought the bluray edition. The plot, what there was of it, sucked. Good effects and image quallity. The movie lacked strength because of the subdued roles of the supporting actresses. Nothing as clever or brilliant in the character interaction and interplay as with Craig's first Bond movie, Casino Royale...
  18. I just went to send him a message, but his account has been 'deactivated'. Have I missed something? [*-)] P.S. Yeah, okay, Somebody sent me an email. Can I say that while some may come onto this forum a bit 'feisty', others IMHO tend to overreact to posts. This fosters an atmosphere of animosity. Just like a little ol' snowball, gathering momentum as it travels down a mountain. Then somebody gets banned. Can I say, that I have read Batmans Robin's posts, and there were numerous responses that were in themselves, quite antagonistic. I think those that responded in such a way deserve to reflect on their behaviour too... P.P.S. Hey, Amy. This is not a shot at you. You do a great job. I just thought I'd point out to the other parties that they should mind their manners as well - Edwin.
  19. Gee, Pete. You must have a lot of time on your hands! Hey, I've got it! You can't sleep at night. You just lie there and torture yourself with all these unanswerable questions! What I reckon you should do is have another glass of your Jamison Irish Whiskey (on the rocks), then slip another disc on your disc spinner of choice and veg out. Then start focusing on what member of the Heritage family you'd like to buy. Maybe a pair of La Scalas, or my speaker of choice, a pair of Belles. I guarantee that listening to your favorite CD through a pair of La Scala/Belles will blow all the cobwebs out of your brain. You'll feel a lot better for it. []
  20. Here's another DNM picture for you. I read somewhere that DNM amps actually contain no metal. Is that possible???
  21. I don't know whether many have heard of DNM from England. But they make the most exquisite low power solid state amplifiers which they they claim rival the very best in the world. I've read some reviews but I've vever heard any DNM stuff myself. Interestingly, DNM use mainly very high grade perspex and plastics in the construction - even the nuts, bolts and washers! Enjoy the pic...
  22. But I guess maybe you guys are right. There isn't anything that appealing about solid stare amps. They tend to lack that 'look'. That pride of ownership. But not all designs. Check this honey out - the Blue Circle NSCS integrated. Maybe solid state can look sexy too...
  23. What about this Class A beauty? Has anyone tried this with Klipsch Heritage? The Sugden is a very serious contender in the audiophile stakes. Often overlooked, NEVER overrated...
  24. Maybe older s/s amplifiers hiss as well. But I still think we've been brainwashed by the concept of tube ownership - just like those that buy Bose just because it's Bose... Many audiophiles are arguing that modern day solid state designs have caught up with the myth. This Audio Zone AMP1 has had rave reviews...
  25. I've noticed a lot of thrift stores smell bad or even P U stink. One that I know makes me almost gag when I walk in. It smells sickeningly sweet like it's maybe a cleaner of some sort with kind of a dried, putrid bubblegum odor. ...and the thrift store staff look like they've escaped from some sort of institution.
