  1. you know, these convolutions are pretty nifty. theoretically you could get a perfectly flat response from any speaker assuming you have accurate graphs...
  2. The point of the sound sample was to simulate the effects of time-alignment...not an attempt to correct for it. I wouldn't suggest trying to correct for time delay by modifying the waveform because you will have to figure out the exact transport function of the speaker you're connecting to and will have to somehow create the exact opposite, which is essentially an impossible task. Any close approximations will result in some nasty effects and probably even sound worse. ohh, i thought your sample was an attempt to correct it, hence my crusade to get my time delay convolution working. sigh...
  3. you know what? i'm damn tempted to build a poor man's ES network with a cheap computer and digital filters.
  4. the fact that i hear a very obvious echo with a 3ms delay is enough proof for me that it can make a difference. although i think that echo may be due to the fact that a 180db slope isnt steep enough to completely rid my convolution of overlapping.
  5. you delayed everything below 2000hz? i thought the bass bin was already delayed... why delay it more? wouldn't the point be to delay the high frequencies in order to make them aligned with the low?
  6. You mean at the beggining right? yes, sorry. got my a's and b's mixed up. cut me some slack, i've just been using my convolutions to equalize [] as for a steeper slope, i figured that, but i still get the damn echo even at 180db (which is the highest my software goes). now should i be doing this time delay where the woofer is no longer crossing over into the squawker's area? perhaps the filter is adding a delay of its own, thus making 3ms far too much. hell if i know... if you can explain how you edited those nightwish files i might be able to do this correctly. until then, i'll get back to gluing this subwoofer cabinet together.
  7. dr who got me thinking. i did some research and found out how to create my own convolutions. there are many convolution supporting applications, but the one most of us probably use is foobar2000. you would load this file into the convolver. now, i was just fooling around here, and i definitely don't have this thing optimized correctly. i'd much appreciate if dr who could give me more accurate numbers for this convolution. what i did was create a highpass filter at 400hz (6db butterworth) - FILE A then create a lowpass filter at 400hz (6db butterworth) - FILE B add a 3ms silence at the end of file A and paste file B into it, thus creating a 3ms delay for everything above 400hz at a 6db slope. now to create this properly, i'd need to know where the woofer crosses into the squawker (i assumed 400hz.. it may vary from network to network), what slope i should use, and what the actual delay should be. the convolution can be acquired here: http://phile.net/delay.wav
  8. that's too bad. i had more time delay questions still trying to figure out how to create a time delay convolution...
  9. how exactly does one pump 600watts into a la scala? from what i've read, they're only capable of 100 watts, or 120 something db. are these specs vastly "under exaggerated"?
  10. most definitely. Looking for some suggestions on sound card models. Tom depending on your price range, the most popular cards for "music playback" would have to be the e-mu 0404 24/96 (as the other guy suggested) audiophile 192 and e-mu 1212 from my research, the 192 seems to be the best out of these four cards for the LS. it can also be had for around only $120 on amazon. the best and most expensive solution would be an external DAC and using an inexpensive soundcard with decent digital output solely as a transport.
  11. chicago II dvd-a remaster is also great
  12. la scalas can be shipped across the country for about $300 via freight edit: so, they're supposedly not even broken in, yet someone took the time out to stain these speakers which were just "sitting in the garage in the shipping cartons for many years?"
  13. oh, thank you very much for clearing that up. i may attempt to put together these extreme slope networks for my la scalas in that case. i know if i don't have the "best," the thought of upgrading will always be lingering in the back of my mind. but that of course can be thwarted after i price out the parts required for said networks. i have a bad habit of starting somewhere, then slowly working my way up the price chain once i do more research. first i was just going to purchase pre-built aa's, then i pondered the thought of making your universal networks, now i'm stuck contemplating building the ES crossovers... when does it end?
  14. Al, i've always been confused by your extreme slope network. From what i've read, i've been given the impression that they only are supposed to be used if you a) upgraded your squawker or run your setup two way (which would also mean you changed the squawker). Is there any way to integrate them into a completely stock la scala without needing to change the midrange and tweeter horns/drivers? i also see there are two "boards" for each speaker, and according to what i understand from your DIY page (unless it was recently updated), there is one schematic for each "board" and you must choose a certain combo depending on which midrange upgrade you used, but there doesn't seem to be a combo for a stock la scala. this also confuses me, but i won't ask you to get into that in this thread, as it's probably a long explaination. thanks.
  15. difference was immediately noticable. i'm not sure how to calculate crossover points, but it sounds "warmer." mission accomplished. now i've had first hand experience as to how crossovers can affect sound. thanks again for the help, al.
  16. why thank you, al. something like this is exactly what i was looking for. i just want to get a little taste of what network improvements entail before i go for the kill. and yes, building your networks is exactly what i had in mind for the long run. edit: oh, by the way. are these modifications still recommended even without replacing the transformer and adding the 13uf cap?
  17. those la scalas are terrible. he has been trying to get rid of them since may or june. the cabinets are beat to hell, which he does not show in the pics. there are large holes in them from ceiling mounting and everything looks pretty terrible. he also doesn't seem to want to say the kind of jbl woofer he used, even when i e-mailed him months ago. i offered the guy $450 originally. i'm sure glad he was too greedy to accept it.
