  1. Well I didn't say money wass no object. thats why I need inexpensive golf. I spent a week in San Diego once and really loved the La Jolla area but that is a little out of my league. Also the California taxes and the whole left coast attitude kind of puts me off. Beutiful place to visit but don't think I would fit in there.
  2. so we just wait out hurricane season then head down there every year? I hadn't thought of it maybe I'll mapquest it and see how far it is from here. Thanks for the idea.
  3. My wife and I have a week of vacation in may with no plans. She suggested looking at places that we might want to retire too. There are a few stipulations that we have on the area. Needs to have easy and affordable golf, has to have a walking and /or bike paths that are somewhat interesting, has to be south where golf and out door walking can happen year round, inexpensive taxes, easy access to a variety of moderate dinning( don't need fine dining just good eats in comfortable surroundings) lake and or ocean would be nice, some cultural things like movies, shows , concerts. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated since people on this forum are from all over. I'd just like to hear some suggestions and why. we are planning on retiring in a couple of years, we will be relatively young late fifties and plan on spending late fall winter and early spring there.
  4. First time I saw it after this post. Would love to get my PC connected to my sound system and projector.
  5. Got a pair just like them from Boomac here on the forum. Sorry I've been using them as rear centers but I know that they do sound good enough to be front HT's especially in a medium or small room.
  6. No not Dr. Strange Love. More like a toupee a female would wear below the waist.
  7. Mine is a SL-D2. It has auto return and a nice tone arm lift. It's direct drive which isn't premo but I use mine for just my old albums and some stuff I pick up at goodwill and garage sales. They are fun to play and very inexpensive. I just put a new cart on it I think it was a shure m97x. Kind of an all around truckster. Sounds good, though I'm not a real audiophile. I think I've lost too much hearing.
  8. It is not just internet purchases it is any purchases from an out of state vender that does not collect Illinios tax. I live on the Iowa boarder so I noticed it on car purchases. The local dealers just over the river collect Illinios tax so that you can get the car tittled and registered. But the mall on the Iowa side does not collect Illinios tax just Iowa tax. If I ordered the same product over the internet or phone and had it shipped to me from some states I may or may not pay their local sales tax and more likely than not pay Illinios sales tax. The real rub since the kremlin in springfield is out of money is that the last few years they are charging tax on all the venders that my wife uses in her medical practice. I think it is 3%on all medical supplies and medicine and 7 % on all other supplies like office supplies that are bought out of state and the vender doesn't charge Illinios tax. Like some medicaL drape comapny in Jersey wants to keep an Illinios tax table and pay quarterly statements to Illinios. You have to keep all of your billing receipts for the buissness and store with your tax forms just incase you get audited in the next 7 years. Didn't there use to be like a wholesale price without state taxes on supplies and products used for resale? Now it is like a VAT tax. The people that are hurt by this are the consumers. Prices go up to cover the tax and the cost of the extra book keeping. So with each office visit the patient pays more and then the kremlin in springfield can cry about the rising cost of healthcare.
  9. I just got a call from my accoountant that said Illinios is asking for amount of internet purchases and wants you to pay the state sales tax on it. This is for purchases over the internet from out of state companies that don't charge illinois tax. How do they prove it, outside of auditing you to death or pulling your amazon account. Do you just throw them a bone for a couple hundred bucks ( I really have no idea) and pay the 7% of it? Maybe it is time to move out of the peoples republic of chief Illini, but where do you go?
  10. Hi rivernuggets, I have an old technics that I bought new in about 1980. I put it back in service a yr ago and it has been working well. Not top of line but it plays the records well. You can find these for not much $$$ all over.
  11. when I originally got mine in 89 I used a Sony ES receiver. It was about 100 wats per channel. When I went to .71 I used a Denon 3805. Then I went to Sunfire separates TGP5 and a TGA7400. They sounded great with all of them. With that tractrix they can handle about anything.
  12. Oh, I thought that was the Prez driving. The mayor of Chi town and his buddy with the black comb over on the side. They were driving the economy or economy car.
  13. Dang Dtel that looks like mi high school days.
  14. I did the 60's Time life CD's. I felt the sound quality was OK. They were taking them from old masters I believe. I mostly listen to them in my car so I haven't really don any critical listening though.
  15. I just got a mailing on Google TV and Logitech Revue. Has anyone here tried it, liked it, hated it or not worth it.. I already have the compatable receiver and internet hard wired to it.
  16. Depends on what is the meaning of fanatic. Ask Colter? Heck I only have 6 forte II's two academys, 2 quartets 3 belles and a quintet system. So far it feels good.
  17. Not my system but this pair grabbed my eye when I was looking at your quiet hollow. Hope they don't belong to anyone on the board They say they are RF63's but I think they might really be 35's
  18. Jay said Oh I hate Nader for this..... Nuclear is safer in nearly all respects comparatively to any form of energy. Coal kills more people per year in just mining the *** stuff than nuclear. I thought it was Jane Fonda and "The China Syndrome". Just another reason to dislike her.
  19. Like I said I wish I'd paid more attention in school. I always thought that Rome was dead after the west was over ran by the germans in about 500ad. I went back and read a little and see that the eastern romen empire lived on. In school I was more into beer and girls than the start of western civilization.
  20. Somalia doesn't pump any dead dinosaurs to fill the tank of my SUV. Libia, Iran and Saudia Arabia do.
  21. Actually, the Byzantines were a lot more interesting, IMHO. The very word "Byzantine" has come to mean:1. very complex: extremely complex or intricate 2. devious: marked by deviousness or scheming This is REALLY an interesting subject. Rehashing the favorite subjects of contemporary talking heads gets a bit hackneyed for my tastes... Chris Yes This makes me wish I had paid more attention in my humanities class the first two years of college. I went to a small liberal arts college that required 12 hours of a class called heritage of western man. It started with the time of recorded history and went through WWII. It studied history, art, architecture, philosophy, literature and religion and how the related to each other through the different times. I remember the Byzatine empire being very large influencial and domineering society for Europe and the mid east. This would include most of western culture. Probably as important as the Romans.
  22. odyssey, Read about any major newspaper, any TV news including NPR and they have all mentioned it. It is a part of Islam, read about Islam. I don't need to take a deep breath I don't have my head buried in the sand. (no pun intended)
