  1. My 78 project has been on hold but I would guess an equalizer is not mandatory. Maybe the other guys will check in later. Check the offerings on this webpage for turntables, re-equalizers, etc for use in playing back old 78 rpm records. There's lots of very good gear including cartridges designed specifically for early 78s. http://www.78rpm.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=NRC&Category_Code=100 Thanks for the link and welcome to the forum....good to see another tarheel here!

  4. No way dude, they are awesome. What pre amp and power amp is that. Thanks duder! Quicksilver Audio Horn Monos and a Juicy Music Blueberry Xtreme.
  5. What....you haven't seen pine sap before?

  7. Remembering the time we chipped in to get the Scott checked out and sent to him. He was so appreciative!

Lot of eye candy there. Started to say I love the Tascam R2R but I love it all.
  9. I know Tommyboy was in the military. As far as I know, his last post was right before he was deployed back in August 2009. I hope the unthinkable did not happen. Hope not too....maybe TB will check in. Bluesboy moved to the west coast near Seattle. I hear Spongeworthy had a house fire (not hurt) just property damage. Hey Duke....are you still out there?
  10. And this time Oscar.....if she wants you to be her boy toy.....oblige her. What are you saving yourself for
  11. The only thing I did wrong was stay in Mississippi a day too long
  12. Very interesting article. Plug in software to emulate wow and flutter, tape saturation, and tube warmth so that digital recording can sound more analog like. Reminds me of the Yamamoto A08 amplifier with its high distortion and loyal following. Granted it is a thing of beauty.
  13. Never met him though he lived about four miles away at Wrightsville Beach, NC. I know I should remember many more regulars that are no longer posting but I am drawing blanks. What was the last name of Alan who lived in Hollywood...seems like it was Singer or Sanger? His avatar was an album cover of Baby Face Willette. Coda was a Carolina boy...Chapel Hill as I recall. Can't forget Duke's talking head avatar. A man of few words...another nice guy.

  15. Wish I could help you Marcello....someone will come along shortly and answer. In the mean time welcome to the forum

You're thinking of bluesboy. He has the K horns and also built my LS hybrids. He also built a pair of K horns for Spongeworthy (haven't seen him here for some time).

Girl friend left for Georgia leaving me here to fend for myself till Saturday. So after picking out 7 DVDs from the library I came home and decided to change out some equipment. First change was to unplug the horn monos and the JM Blueberry Extreme and hook up the HK A500 integrated amp to the turntable and to the R2R. Haven't put but a couple of hours on the 51 year old amp since Craig fixed it up a year or so ago. Next I hooked up the Pioneer SX950 a friend gave me to the Jolida CDP. Wanted to see if the tubed output of the CDP would mellow the SS sound. The next change will be to hook the Quick Silver Audio preamp up to the horn monos, the turntable, and the second R2R. And you guys said I don't know how to have fun
  20. I have done a little tube rolling and it is fun to try different brands though to be quite frank I am not sure I could distinguish the subtle difference among tubes with the lights off. Here is the problem as I see it. Listening to different tubes back to back involves considerable lag time between installation and tube warm up and this would need to be consistent to be fair in evaluating what I hear. And of course source material and gear would have to remain identical as would volume levels and the age of the tubes. Some have even suggested that time of day and atmospheric conditions influence sound. Do I trust my memory of what I heard some ten minutes or two hours ago? Was I influenced by others opinions or what I had read or heard about specific tubes? Does mood influence what I hear. The list of variables goes on and on. Some power tubes may demonstrate less "personality" or "sonic differences" than phono or line stage tubes and I have only rolled four quads in my power amps so I am by no means an authority. A forum bud up in Virginia kindly loaned me a bunch of tubes to try in my preamp and CD player and after a week or two I settled on some that at that particular time struck my fancy. I ended up with Bugle Boys in the Jolida CD player and Telefunken in the Quicksilver Full Function preamp phono section. Another day I might have taken a shine to old stock RCA, Raytheon, or Siemens tubes. Tube rolling was a fun exercise for me if a bit frustrating and trying to squeeze that last drop of sweetness from a piece of gear is a lot of why we are here. I am enjoying this thread and would like to hear more from others about their experiences. Maybe Craig and Mark will talk about how they "voice" their tube equipment builds.
  21. Have used Doug's Tubes without problems. Doug will give you tube suggestions upon request. Duder....probably thinking of Brent Jesse.
