  1. I understand V. Give us a price range and some particulars such as room size and maybe others will offer suggestions. There may be members on the forum with an amp or receiver for sale. I am using a tubed HK receiver from the early 60s that I bought on Audiogon for $380 in my second system and it sounds wonderful. Have you listened to your friends Onkyo? If you like it see if you can take it home to audition with your speakers and then decide.
  2. Welcome to th forum V. Why not go tubes first and save a lot of time and money. If you stay here long you most likely will end up there. If you are comfortable with tube equipment and up keep try a vintage piece like Scott, Eico, Harmon Kardon, Fisher. Just my opinion but I have had ss and tubes and I prefer tubes.
  3. The last athelete to go to jail in his prime was probably Mike Tyson. His come back never really got off the ground though he did make some nice pocket change. If Vick serves 12-18 months as the plea seems to indicate how long before another coach decides to give him a shot at QB? Any bets out there?
  4. If any good came out of this incident I think is an increased awareness of a pass time (dog fighting) that unfortunately can be found in just about any part of the country. A high profile athelete doing these horrible crimes makes for much greater news coverage which has in turn lead to investigations in many other locals. Like the rest of you I would have preferred that this incident had never had happend. The up side is the attention has lead to action by the authorities in other cases even in my own neck of the woods. The fact that the NFL is making a statement in this case is also a positive.
  5. Thats great news J...... and you have gone above and beyond in your care of Bodhi. Congrats to you both[][Y] Yes he is a handsome fella.
  6. Yes I have used the "goop in a tray" for about two years now. The ZeroDust by Onzow comes with a top that doubles as a magnifying glass. Pricey for its size but it works well to remove the gunk from your stylus. I use a Clearaudio Virtuoso Wood cartridge with an extended cantilever that is just too fragile to risk a mistake with brush and cleaner solutions. What I do is put the tray on the tt platter and lower the arm. Leave the stylus in the gel for a couple of seconds and raise the arm. The gunk/dust remains in the gel and the stylus is clean. Once the gel gets a little dirty it can be washed with mild soap and water. My Zerodust has not needed to be cleaned in the two years I have owned it. You are right Fritz there was a long thread a while back on cleaning records and it was very informative. Maybe someone can revive that thread....it was a good read. I think Travis has done a lot of experimenting with cleaners. There was some discussions about record cleaning machines and hepa air cleaners for the music room as I recall. BTW....you can often find the ZeroDust on Audiogon for $39. Usually sells for $69.
  7. Good point Buck....it would be easier without the horse. I imagine you have thrown some shoes in your day. BTW...did you see that special on the 60s on PBS last night? Really good....brought back memories....drugs, nam, watergate, Nixon, assasinations of the Kennedys, King....Woodstock, Monterey...Weathermen....Black Panthers...ERA....Kent State......what a decade. Remember the quote "If you remember the 60s....you weren't there"? Back to the thread......Bluesboy brought one of those bowls by sunday when he came over to make a tape and to drink my liquor.....very nice work. If you like vodka...you must try Tito's Vodka....made in Texas and very smooth. Really!
  8. Actually Bluesboy has been talking about doing some wood horns for some time. If he tried it I am sure they would be first rate. He really is a skilled wood worker. I think a lot of folks don't realize how labor intensive these projects are and you have to charge accordingly unless its just a hobby. Buckster....I am still considering a shot at the horseshoe title but understand its his home court. We have never tried a game without a snootfull so who knows what would happen[*-)]
  9. oldtimer.....thanks I fixed it....love that edit function[:$] Congrats Coytee on the Crown[8]
  10. I am waiting as well. Retubing a Quicksilver Audio preamp with nos tubes from the 50s and 60s. Can't wait to hear them. A mix of Mullards, GE, RCA, and Tung Sol....7 tubes in all. Champing at the bits.
  11. Thanks for the offer Jay....I'll keep looking......not worth getting into trouble.
  12. [8] Had a little drink about an hour ago and its gone straight to my head[8] Wall Street......very good....may have watched that one 10 times or more. About the only movie I liked Daryl Hannah in. Like most of Michael Douglas' movies.......Wall Street....Black Rain and the one with Gwyneth Paltrow....can't remember the name. Romancing the Stone was a bit silly. I was just watching Fast Money on cnbc. They mentioned Jaws I and how bad the sequels were. Bear Sterns just announced more bad news so the market may give up some more tommorow. Checked out myspace/klipschgirl. Impressive. Never spent much time there but I will have to start checking in. BTW......Goodfellas is on AMC at 8:00 tonight[]
  13. Have a hard time remembering movies until someone else mentions them. Recently watched A History of Violence for the third or fourth time. I can watch Alan Alda in The Four Seasons time after time. Same goes for The Big Chill....love that scene at the funeral when they play the Stones tune. American Grafitti and Jaws I are favorites. Great scene in Jaws where they all are a bit loaded and start comparing their scars and drinking to their legs. Saw the Exorcist in college....had to go by a group of baptist protesting the movie as devil worship....scary when Linda Blair's head spins around....scarier still when the baptist heads spin to watch me go through the picket line[] The market turned south big time after I posted this morning.....another bad day. Watch a movie and don't think about[:'(]
  14. I can watch the Godfather I and II over and over and over and still find something new. They are just that awesome. And with the DVD's commentaries, deleted scenes, and re-edited version....jessh, I'm in heaven. I only enjoy part III as long as Vincent, Mary, and Connie aren't on screen, which unfortunately is too much of the time. Michael and Kay are the only main characters worth watching. And don't even get me started on The Deer Hunter. I just watched it again about 2 weeks ago. LOVE it. John Cazale was taken too young. Sorry about derailing the stock market thread! [:$] What Amy....no chick flicks......you are watching guy movies. I never hear women talking about how great the Godfather movies are. Can't get my wife to do that. You are right about Cazale....wasn't he a boyfriend of Meryl Streep? So I have to mention the market I guess......it's up 45 as we speak.....couple of hundred more and we break even[]
  15. Wonder why we do that? I almost know all the lines by heart. Wish there would have been parts 4,5,6 and so on....great movies. Almost forgot Deer Hunter...great cast in that one....Streep, DeNiro,Walken. Oops....almost forgot this was a market thread......got a nice little bounce today but still holding tight.
  16. Hey buddy...if Monopolowa is as good as Tito's we have got a winner. A Tito's martini and a Mondelo Negra and I am good to go. Tito's is way smooth. I owe you one for that recommendation[]
  17. Funny Brian.......My wife always jokes about me watching the same movies over and over....such as the Godfather saga, Platoon, Deliverance, and so on. I tell her I had rather watch good movies over and over than to watch sit coms or prime time nonsense.
  18. You are right Brian.....I need 15% per year for the next five to double allowing for compounded interest. I have been investing in international funds, energy, and other common stocks. I am a gambler but otherwise it will be a ho hum retirement unless I hit the powerball numbers which is the fifth leg of my retirement program. Can't really count on the house since I hope not to move till they carry me out on a stretcher.
  19. okay guys.....I guess we are expecting a bounce tommorow. Sell into the bounce or hang on for dear life? I held fast friday but if we go down monday....whats the plan? Got a five year time horizon and would like double by then....this close to retirement can't lose a bundle like in 2000. If you can't tell me what to do tommorow then I will go back to watching Godfather part II fo the twelth time this weekend.
  20. okay.....I have tried the Modelo Negra and Tito's vodka. Both are very good. They are smooth and go well with billiards, music, golf and ultimate fighting as well as mexican food. So thanks Jay and CECAA850. Wish me well at my 40th hs reunion next weekend. I will have one of each before I go face the jury.
  21. One of the contributors to Stereophile magazine actually uses laser pens taped to the middle of the speakers. Once the laser beams intersect at ear level of his seat of choice he is done. Little too much work for me. I did experiment last night moving the top hat of my LS clones in and out and it does make a difference.
  22. Very nice Colter.....tell the tall girl in the hat Tarheel said[] Have fun!
